-just because your idea seems clear to you does not mean it is clear to the reader
-avoid irrelevant information
-be persuasive
Notes will be fewer today, I understand, because I had you busy writing so much of the time. 2s will be easier to earn. 3s are still reserved for the best and most thorough.
2/3
Why is there no such thing as an empty bottle of scotch?
its not a bottle of scotch if theres no scotch in it
How can an argument be lost in the first sentence?
lying, belittling the audience, not being clear of your premise (your job is to persuade), confuse your readers.
Who wins the argument? the person who’s perspective is changed.
What is a definition essay?
– identify a problem and its definition in regard to your paper
The term defined doesn’t have to be a problem.

2/3
Began class with the scotch bottle riddle and a short two question quiz.
And then discussed who really wins an argument. The person who wins is the one whose eyes get open, you can be right but that isn’t really winning.
Watched a Vimeo on the great pacific garbage patch and decided if it was a good persuasion effort.
Was it? Why not? The best Notes answer questions, Nick; they don’t pose them.

Empty bottle of scotch is no longer a bottle of scotch.
Don’t just describe the problem. Explain why it is a problem and what to do.
1/3
-we talked about if an argument can be won or lost in the first sentence
-it cannot be won but it can be lost
-an empty bottle of scotch would not be considered a bottle of scotch because there is none in it, it would be considered a “scotch bottle”
1/3
-an argument cant be won in the first sentence but it can be lost in the first sentence because you can get caught in a lie, have unclear premise, or confuse your readers
-you need to make sure to identify the problem in your argument
-the video on the great pacific garbage patch did not address the consequences or problem with the plastic floating in the ocean so it did not convince anyone to do anything about it
-comments on definition essay were very helpful
– I did not know our state representatives
Do you know your state representatives now? 🙂

A07-short argument due rough draft, Monday March 6 by midnight
Sounds as if you’re getting a handle on gerrymandering.
3/3
An argument can not be won in the first sentence but you can lose an argument in the first sentence.
The person who wins the argument is the person who gains knowledge and changes there perspective.
The Great Pacific Garbage Patch:
plastic patch that is twice the size of texas
continues to grow
made of “plastic soup” plastic particles that have been broken down it releases poison as it is being broken down
it can be stopped at the source but is also to big of a problem for anyone to solve alone
Gerrymandering:
legislators get to draw maps
minorities are given advantage through this process, there votes are given more value
antidemocratic

There’s no such thing as an empty bottle of Scotch because because if the bottle is empty, it’s just an empty scotch bottle.
An argument cannot be won in the first sentence, but it can be lost. The first sentence has to create an argument that has premise. We cannot lie in the first sentence because lying destroys our credibility and detaches our readers. Engaging our readers is one of the most important steps in creating a good first sentence.
A definition argument should be used to define a term or phrase that explains what we want it to mean. It doesn’t mean to just define a term using a dictionary, although using a dictionary definition can be helpful/useful at times.
I like: “to define a term or phrase that explains what we want it to mean.”

The rest of the semester will be small 1000 word essays that can later be combined as our final 3000 word essay.

Why is there no such thing as an empty bottle of scotch? Because once there is no more scotch, it’s no longer a bottle of scotch.
_______________________________________________________________________________
An argument cannot be won within the first sentence but it definitely can be lost.
Remember: The winner is the one who learns.
_______________________________________________________________________________
Plastic is taking over the ocean.
100,000,000 tons of plastic within the great Pacific Garbage Patch. It is 30 meters deep and twice the size of Texas.
But what is the problem? Where is the proof?
Remember to clearly identify the problem.

Definition Essays:
Not something from the dictionary, this would be to simple. Instead, look to something that needs further explanation other than the word itself.
Time to incorporate a term into our writing.
_______________________________________________________________________________
Gerrymandering: We will rewrite the introduction of the article read from last night.

-However an argument can be lost
-either by putting else information, or belittling information, dividing the readers
Great Pacific Garbage Patch
-it is a good when, reaching a topic, we came to learn we know absolutely nothing on the topic
-in an argument, we have to identify the problem
-we can’t just appeal to emotion, we have to explain why there is a problem
Gerrymandering
-the problem is the minority party, is given the advantage through this process
-Red votes(the minority) is given more value then the blue majority votes
-this process is anti democratic
-this tufts university professor is training mathematicians to fix the problem
Combined with Notes above.
3/3
Opening arguments should be convincing and gripping. They are a key part to a convincing paper. Like you said, the argument can be lost in the first sentence. When done correctly, a good opening is almost unnoticeable, the reader is just instantly interested, and then keeps reading, but a bad opening can turn the reader off of your paper immediately. A lot of work should go in to a good opening sentence.
