Class 24: MON NOV 27

penalty kick

Riddle: The Soccer Penalty Kick

What’s the smartest kick?
To the shooter’s strong side, which the goalie is more likely to guard?
Or to the shooter’s weak side, which the goalie is more likely to block if he guesses right?

The authors of Think Like a Freak give us some details to help us decide.

  • The goal is 12 yards away.
  • It’s 8 yards wide and 8 feet tall.
  • You will kick the ball at 80 miles per hour.
  • The kick will arrive at the net in 0.306818 seconds
  • The goalie can’t wait for you to kick. He has to guess and fling his body toward his choice before you make contact with the ball.
  • Overall, at the elite level, 75% of penalty kicks are successful.
  • If he chooses wrong, your odds of success are about 90%.
  • You want him to choose wrong.
  • Whether you’re left- or right-footed, 57% of goalies will guard your strong side. 41% of the time, they’ll guard your weak side.

Answer in the Reply field below and Post Comment:

  1. What’s the best way to improve your odds of kicking the ball where the goalie isn’t?
  2. Why do so few kickers make the most logical choice?

Rewrite Advice

The paragraph is an introduction to the Rebuttal argument. The author argues that fighting in hockey, when it’s retaliatory and conducted by “enforcers” whose job is to dole out justice to bullies who pick fights with star players, actually REDUCES violence and injuries, putting a quick end to the feud by sending the clear message that it will not be tolerated.

The full paragraph is shown below, divided into sentences. Recommended alternatives will be revealed. The replacement sentences, if they’re successful, will:

  1. Express the author’s convictions in bold, clear language.
  2. Provide evidence instead of hinting at it.
  3. Call out the opposition’s flawed conclusions, whatever they are.

No idea comes without a counterargument and this theory remains true in regard to fighting in hockey.

Critics take a surface level look at the violent aspect of the game but fail to appreciate the positivity and safe environment it creates.

Without a true deep dive into the understanding of the players’ minds on the ice, the opposition would draw an incorrect impression.

Additionally, failing to acknowledge the empirical evidence surrounding fighting is another key flaw in the counterargument.

While fighting in hockey has advantages both seen and unseen on the ice, critics cite injury, and that hockey glorifies violence leaving a bad example for children and viewers.

Deep Dive Lyrical Analysis

Not that you have much choice (well, you could walk out!), but I hope you’ll indulge me in listening to a Ben Folds song whose lyrics I both very much admire and nevertheless ruthlessly critique.

I do so partly to amuse myself and you, but importantly to encourage you that I am brutal even to work I really love. So much about this song is genius, and so much of it makes me cringe.

Listen along and read along, please.

    1) That would be the shooter’s weak side, as goalies tend to guard the shooter’s strong side more often.
    2) Very few kickers make the most logical choice likely due to the psychological pressure of the moment.

  2. confusedpinky says:

    1. What’s the best way to improve your odds of kicking the ball where the goalie isn’t?
I would say the bast way to improve your odds would be to go with the obvious. Just as the kicker is a player the goalie is a player too and would in a way expect the unexpected. So in order to break that the expected would be the unexpected.

    2. Why do so few kickers make the most logical choice?
As most these players get lost in the thinking and strategies and seem to forget that most of the time the the most simple choice is the most logical.

  3. Urbie says:

    1. What’s the best way to improve your odds of kicking the ball where the goalie isn’t?
it’s kind of tricky you have to make it in a way where he doesn’t know in which way the ball is going.

    2. Why do so few kickers make the most logical choice?
Usually most of player when they under pressure and stuff like that, they not going to think a lot in a logic and smart way.

  4. rebelpilot64 says:

The best way would be for the shooter to kick the ball towards the goalie’s weak side because that is where you will more likely score a goal.

Most of the time kickers don’t make a logical decision because they are under a lot of pressure to score a goal by the team or by the fans. They barely have time to make that decision.

    Class Notes 11/27
    – Professor Hodges showed us a song where he loves the lyrics but is critical of them. We listened to the lyrics and read Professor Hodge’s analysis and critiques of them.
    – The remarks showed me there is always room for improvement in our writing.
    – We discussed grammar rules, for example the uses of they’re, their, and there.
    – These rules spelled out common grammar mistakes and their simple solutions that will make our writing look and sound better.
    – 2nd person is banned in academic writing (something to revise in my research position paper).
    – One of the last parts of the Agenda goes over due dates for portfolio assignments and other tasks we need to complete upon the end of the semester.
    – The agenda states that the last class of the semester is taking place on December 4th.

  6. hdt1817 says:

    1. Make the goalie think you are going to kick it a certain way, then kick it the other way where he wouldn’t be able to defend it.
    2. They are under high pressure and this can sometimes prevent them from being able to make the most logical move.

    – a goalie should always dive towards the strong side because it is a safer choice. The kicker has more ability on the strong side, so you should bet that side. The person kicking struggles choosing the correct side to go to because they probably overthink how to kick.
    – The luckiest is a really nice song that we listened to and went over the language used in it.
    – basic grammar rules, there, their, they’re and It, it’s

  8. kevinjames says:

I think more times than not if you shot to the weak side, for the majority of your shots you would have an increase in odds from 75 to 90 percent due to goalies majorly guarding the strong side of kickers.
We listened to the song “the luckiest” and read through the lyrics along with the professor’s notes on each segment. It is a good example of how we should be revising our own work and how he would look to give us feedback on an assignment. We went through simple grammatical mistakes and the correct way to use different words. For quotes that we pull from sources, if we are adding a comma or period at the end of it, we need to keep it in the quotation marks. Finally we did an exercise with the class correcting grammatical errors in a paragraph. It was able to demonstrate all of the rules went over in the class.

I agree with this statement because instead of being bullied and pushed around by other players, you are allowed to fight to let others know that you are not to be messed with and some might take that wise advice.

-the soccer penalty kick riddle: I think that the smartest kick would be to shoot to the goalies weak side. The best way to improve your odds of kicking the ball where the goalie isn’t is probably acting like your kicking to your strong side but actually kick it to the weak side, kind of trick the goalie. I think so few kickers make the most logical choice because they might not want to fail.
-“what if I been born 50 years before you in a house on a street where you live” I really loved this lyric because it tells of everything that may have kept them away from each other. When it got to the part about the old man dying and then a couple days later his wife died the song got more sad but sweeter. People can die from broken hearts and he doesn’t wanna be that way, instead he wants to be with her for the rest of their lives.
-we went over a grammar lesson to decrease our number of grammatical errors
-we went over our schedule and we have a bunch of due dates coming up

  13. sunflower828 says:

    1. In order to kick the ball where the goal is not, you must kick it into the corners of the goal which are not able to be covered by the goalie even if they dive for the ball.
    2. Kickers taking the kicks are often thinking too hard about the decision and will often mess up when taking the kick due to the pressure.

  14. thad711 says:

    1. The player taking the penalty kick should shoot on the goalies weak side as its the best odds of making it in the net
    2. Players may not always make the most logical choice because they may feel more comfortable shooting on the opposite side which may be the kickers strong side

    Riddle-

    1. The best way to improve the accuracy in making a goal is to point your body opposite of where you’re aiming the ball at.
    2. Kickers rarely make sense decisions because goalies usually know where the kicker is aiming.
  16. millycain says:

    Class Notes 11/27:
-The best place to kick the ball is where the goalie is physically unable to reach. The reason why this choice is rarely chosen is because driving the ball into a top corner where the goalie can’t reach is a more difficult shot to actually locate on target. Considering that it is already hard enough for the goalie, taking an easier shot that has a chance for the goalie to block it is the more appealing option.

    Exercise:
    – But Enough About You
    o Make Friends, not Enemies
+ Although it’s technically not bad grammar, writing 2nd-person sentences that address the reader as “you” is banned from academic writing.
    1) Incorrect: You are far more likely to be pulled over for speeding if you are a teenager.
2)Correct: Teenagers are far more likely to be pulled over for speeding.
    o Fails for Grammer
+ Using you, your, or yours, in academic essays for this class is a “Fails For Grammar” (FFG) offense. Practice several techniques to eliminate the 2nd person from your work, and always do a page search for “you” before posting.
    o Why?
+ Academic essays are arguments, but they’re persuasive, not contentious. We don’t lecture our readers, preach to them, or accuse them of holding particular beliefs. Every use of the 2nd person creates a regrettable distance between the Author and the Reader. It doesn’t mean to, but it makes Readers “the others.”
    o Demonstration
    + Neutral Claim
    1) “United States has never had a women president.”
    + Inclusive Clam
    1) Author and Reader on the same team
    2) “It’s important to remember that we’ve never had a woman president.”
    + Exclusive Claims
    1) Separate the Author (who knows what needs to be remembered) from the
Reader (who needs to be reminded what’s important)
    2) ” What you need to remember is that you’ve never had a woman president.”

I really don’t think there is a smart shot on a penalty kick in soccer. Its really a guess on the keeper’s side. The really good kickers like ronaldo and messi have learned how to perfect this kick over the years. Obviously it is harder for the keeper to get it in certain spots.

The way he described the song – the luckiest. It was very interesting how he took every line and took a deep dive into every word. It makes you think that there is a deeper meaning behind every word that people took the time to write and make it play along with the song.

Some of these grammar checks I had no idea about. The sentence at the end showed us that it can be difficult to change most of these mistakes. It makes sense when you hear what he is saying but it is still a thing I have to learn a little better.

    Riddle answers:

    • The best way to improve your odds of kicking the ball where the goalie isn’t, is kicking the ball to your weak side. Less then 50% of the time goalies cover a kicker’s weak side.
    • Few kickers make the most logical choice because they don’t have a lot of time to think. Maybe the adrenaline or pressure they are feeling gets the best of them, so they do not think about their choices

    Class notes:

    • Call out the opposition’s flawed conclusions every chance you get. Make sure you are using their strong arguments so refuting the counterargument helps your argument.
