- The elevator should be idle and ready to respond to summoning requests waiting at its rest state on the last floor a passenger exited.
- When a passenger on a specific floor presses the Summon button to call the elevator, proceed to that floor immediately.
- when the summoned floor is reached, stop the elevator and open the doors. Wait for passengers to enter or exit.
- After 15 seconds of inactivity (no passenger enters or exits the elevator and no new summoning requests are made), close the doors to continue the operation. There is an exception to this rule if a passenger happens to break the light beam at the entrance of the elevator.
- If the elevator is proceeding upward, ignore any Down Summons. Do not stop on floors with Down Summons while heading upward. If a Down Summons is made on a floor that is on the way down, stop and pick up passengers.
- If the elevator is proceeding downward, ignore any Up Summons. Do not stop on floors with Up Summons while heading downward. If an Up Summons is made on a floor that is on the way up, stop and pick up passengers.
- After all passengers have exited the elevator it should idle on the floor which the last passenger exited and wait for a new summons call
- In case of an emergency, such as a passenger activating the emergency stop button, immediately stop at the nearest and open the doors for assistance.
- Monitor the passenger load, and if the elevator exceeds its weight limit, activate overload protection and display a message on screen alerting passengers to leave the elevator to continue normal operation

These statements for the most part accurately describe the current situation, but they ARE NOT:
A set of INSTRUCTIONS to an ignorant elevator that needs to be programmed to operate as desired.
FOR EXAMPLE:
1. When the UP BUTTON is lit on any floor above where the car is positioned, proceed immediately to that floor, not stopping at any intervening floor.
Check out Sunflower828’s post. It’s closer to the ideal set of Instructions.
Hey professor, I have edited my response and resubmitted
Beautiful work, LaFlame.
There are lots of innovations here that benefit the cause. 🙂
Of course, I have feedback.
—They’re still not quite purely INSTRUCTIONS.
—You’re hedging between instructions and description of what happens or should happen.
—Your first description, for example, is useful to human readers who want to understand what happens when nobody needs an elevator. BUT, the ELEVATOR doesn’t need to know this at all. It will do NOTHING, which is how you describe the situation in your first description. Since it gives the ELEVATOR no INSTRUCTIONS, it would not appear in the full list of elevator instructions.
—That’s OK at this stage of the collaborative effort we’re engaged in. Any contributions you make are valued.
Regraded.
Further revisions are always encouraged, and regrades are always available following substantial improvements.
Should you revise, your Beloved Professor will not automatically notice.
So, if you desire a Regrade, put your post back into Feedback Please and let me know you’ve earned fresh consideration.
I’ll decide whether the improvements are substantial.
(Try not to make things worse. 🙂 )
