In the first few seconds of the film, we see pitch black darkness which typically always symbolizes something dark/sad or even indicating the past. It seems to be a dark room. There is a guy in the first second of the video, the camera zooms into him to specify that he is important and is there for a reason. He is dressed with what seems to be a leather jacket and he looks fairly young maybe 21-22. Behind the guy is a huge number one sign that has a light. The number one must be important because it is the only thing highlighted in this clip. Everything else has no color and is dark. It shines behind the man, guiding my focus from him to view what is behind him and why.

In the next two seconds of the video, the setting changes to a young man getting into his car. The young man has on a sweatshirt and sweatpants and has messy hair so maybe he just came from home but, judging by the cars parked next to his he could have been out at a store. The guy in this clip could have been running errands and is now trying to hurry into his car to get to his next destination. It seems like he is in a hurry judging by the way he swings the door open and how fast he gets into his car. This clip has light and color I am able to see what color clothes he has, the color of the sky which looks grey and dull and his car color. This to me indicates is in the present and is happening now. The setting then flips back to the dark room with no color only pitch black darkness but, this time there is a different person. This time there is a young girl. I would say she is 19 by the way she is dressed. She has a cute white sweater and jeans on something every teenage girl is wearing these days. She seems emotionless judging by the blank facial expression she has. Behind her there is a shining light, it’s a huge number 2. The numbers are going by order. The first clip started at number 1 and is now at 2. For every one of these numbers there has been a person in front of them. This could mean that this is their specific number. The camera then switches back to the clip of the guy in the sweatshirt getting into his car. In this clip it zooms into him inserting the key into the car and twisting it. The camera angle shows the letters on the car key. It says engine, run, ACC, or start. The guy twists his key all the way to the start and starts up his car, maybe to drive to his next destination.

The camera flips to the dark room again. This time showing a different person. He looks young maybe 18-19. He has on a t-shirt and a beanie hat. Behind him is the number 3 shining through. 3 seems to be his number. The camera then zooms into his face. He doesn’t have any expression on his face either, but judging by his eyes he seems sad like they are watering up.

0:06-0:08

The camera flips back to the guy in the car. This time it shows him pulling the gear shift all the way back to presumably drive. The camera shows his hands pulling the gear shift with force. It could be that he is in a rush so is trying to hurry. The setting then changes back to the dark room. This time with a different person, a woman. She has a shining number 4 behind her. She is the fourth person that has been shown in this room. She also seems young and has on a jacket. When the camera zooms into her face only half of it is shown. Maybe because something happened to the other side.

0:09-0:13

The camera then flips back to the guy in the car. The camera is focusing on the steering wheel and is only showing the steering wheel and his hands moving the wheel. Judging by the way his hands are moving the wheel, it seems like he is moving driving out of somewhere maybe a parking lot and is driving to the road. For a second the camera flips back to the dark room. This time a different guy is shown with a shining number 5 behind him. Just as the rest of them he stands there with no expression. The camera then switches back to guy in the car. This time it is at a low angle. It captures the entire car side on a road and a house behind it. The car seems to be going fast judging by how quick the angles changed. Then the camera proceeds to show a slight second of the back to the car. Showing that the car is going by quick. After this scene the camera pans back to the dark room again with a different person. This time a different girl and a different number 6. She seems younger than the others judging by her small face and wavy hair. The camera zooms into her face as well, this girl ism staring into the camera like the others but instead at a higher angle.

0:14-0:17

The camera the flips back to the guy in the same car. This time the angle of the camera focuses on the brake. The camera is pointed directly at the car brake and shows the guy slamming his sneakers into the break. He could’ve stopped too late, almost hit a car, or was distracted and wasn’t paying close attention. The next second the camera setting changes and shows a different older guy in the dark room. He is number 7. The camera quickly flips back to the guy in the car he is still driving but this time the camera zooms into his rear view mirror. The guy seems to be tired/sleepy judging by his droopy eyes and his finger movement that was shown. His finger was used for a second to hold his face while he was driving almost as if it was to keep his face up. The camera then flips to the dark room again. It shows the same guy that was shown as number 7 but this time he is carrying a baby. There is a number 8 behind the both of them indicating the baby is number 8.

0:18-0:20

The camera pans back to the guy in the car. This time zooming in on his eyes. In this frame all we can see is the top half of his face and half of his hair. The camera zooms into this for a reason so that we can pay close attention to his eyes and where they are looking. The camera then pans to his phone which is in his hand. Two messages from “Mom” are shown on his lock screen which means he hasn’t opened them yet. One message says “Where are you” and the other “You’re gonna miss it” which is why this guy could have been in such a hurry because he needed to get to an other destination. The camera shows him unlocking his phone presumably to answer and the Fram goes back to the top half of his face showing that his eyes went from watching the road to looking down at his phone to respond to the message. As the guy tries to hurry and out his passcode in to unlock his phone and respond, the camera seems to get blurry and shows his hair swaying towards the front for a split second. After this the frame goes black which indicates he crashed because he was on his phone.

0:21-0:25

The screen turns black and shows the words “Every day, too many people die in distracted driving crashes.” The screens turns a bit brighter almost to a grayish and shows the guy in the car entering the frame. Behind him is a number 9. He seems to be lost not knowing where he is which could happen because people don’t realize how fast and fatal a car crash can turn.

0:26-END

The camera then zooms into his face. He has blood on the side of his head dripping from the crash. The words “Don’t drive distracted” appear on the front of his face. The guy fades with the background showing yet another person lost due to a car crash. “Don’t drive distracted” stays on the screen until the end indicating the message they want to get convey.

Overall:

This ad was a bit difficult to describe without the sound but it was possible. While I was analyzing the video and stopping at every second I found things that I wouldn’t have caught onto before. For example the clip of the camera zooming into the guys eyes. I would have not thought anything of it but it was in fact important to highlight and describe because it had a meaning. Overall the video had my attention every second because of clips that subtly showed the message. It reminded me of those gun violence awareness ads for schools where you would be focusing on the main characters storyline but, behind them the message and theme of the video would appear indicating that you weren’t really paying close attention. I think this was a good ad for me to analyze because of how powerful the message is and I really enjoyed describing everything the guy was doing in his car down to the little details. It also really kept my attention with the people and the numbers behind them which meant that they were the number of deaths because of this issue. I do think with sound it would have made it easier but I still enjoyed analyzing the video without sound because it was something new for me.

ILM5, I couldn’t make any sense of what you were describing, so I had to go take a peek at the opening shot of this video.

Here’s what I think you owe your readers since they depend entirely on you for everything:

—The video opens on a mostly black scene, but a few details are apparent.
—First, this is a highly unnatural location, setting, and setup. We are not in a simple dark bedroom or outdoor scene. The creators of the video have gone to pains to create an unnatural opening, one might say theatrical.
—In fact, one of the few things we can make out in the pervasive darkness is the drapery effect in the center of the screen. While the left and right edges of the screen are completely black, we can see the vertical pleats of what would be a theater curtain if we’re in a theater. And we may be.
—A young man stands at “stage center” facing directly forward (meaning at US), motionless, dressed all in black against the black background. All we can see of him with any clarity is his face and hands, which hang motionless at his sides. He is standing “at attention” as if waiting for directions. A slight sheen from his jacket and the pleats of the fabric suggest it may be black leather.
—Crucial to the scene is the spotlighted numeral “1” directly centered above his head, roughly the same height as the young man, a number that is probably created by a shaped spotlight, which enhances the impression that this is a theater space.
—It’s hard to know what to make of this opening except that it is designed to attract immediate attention, and that it may suggest the beginning of a sequence of people (1, 2, 3, and so on) or maybe a collection of people (will he be joined by a second person and a third)? Either way, the filmmakers have put themselves in charge of everything. They’re not out gathering natural footage. They’re creating a deliberate setting for whatever follows.

I’ll read the rest of your work now without looking at the rest of the video, which I’ve never viewed. I’ll try to judge and grade your work on the basis of how well I can see and understand what you’re telling me and how well you convey your impressions of the Rhetoric the filmmakers deploy.

Don’t wait for more feedback before revising. Make changes all the way through if I’ve been helpful. Ask a clarifying question if I haven’t. Put the post into Regrade Please or back into Feedback Please or both following any significant improvements.
