Rural Mental Health

0:00-0:01

A couple faces the camera, positioned as the focal point of the shot. A portrait of the two and the landscape beyond them. The camera shifted back to reveal more of the scene. Above them, the sky suggests early morning, with soft hues of light indicating a calm, serene atmosphere.

The lush environment around them hints at summer, but there are still uncertainties about the exact setting. Crops are visible beneath them, which might suggest they are on a farm, but we cannot be sure whether these are crops they tend to or simply part of the scene. The couple is dressed in pink, possibly to suggest they’re in harmony with one another, though what they might be “on the same page” about is unclear. At this point, we can’t tell much beyond their casual, comfortable appearance, which suggests they are at ease in their surroundings.

0:01-0:02

Assuming they are a couple, as they walk hand in hand along a dirt path that cuts through rows of crops, with the camera capturing them from behind. The crops are healthy and vibrant, surrounding them on both sides. The sky remains a cool blue with wispy clouds, adding to the serene feeling of the scene. Trees line the foreground, possibly leading into a forest in the distance.

While the couple’s relaxed demeanor further reinforces the peaceful vibe, we still don’t know whether they are the farm’s owners, workers, or visitors. There’s a separate path to the left, marked by two dirt tracks, which could be used by farm machinery. This gives us a clue that the land might be actively worked.

0:02-0:03

The camera shifts focus to the crops in front of the couple as they continue walking. This shift highlights the couple’s connection to their hard work, with the crops serving as a visual representation of their effort. The lush greenery and bright blue sky in the background remain unchanged, reinforcing the theme of growth and prosperity.

To the right, a light wooden structure appears, though it’s not clear what it is. It could be farm equipment or some other functional part of the farm, but no details are provided, leaving its purpose ambiguous.

0:04

The couple faces the camera again, now holding a large white sign that reads “SEWELL BERRY FARMS – Pride of Valrico.” This provides new information: the farm grows berries. The crops in the background, visibly sprouting, reinforce this detail, but it’s becoming more clear that this couple runs this farm. The man smiles broadly at the sign, indicating his pride, while the woman looks off to the left, then back to him with a similar smile. Their shared smiles suggest they are united in their joy, but the reasons for their happiness—whether it’s about the farm or something else—remain unclear. This moment underscores their connection.

0:05

The next frame shifts to a red tractor at the forefront, with a man in a gray cap and shirt sitting at the wheel. He’s presumably a worker on the farm, but his specific role is not specified. The image has a slightly faded, aged quality, with the crops behind him just beginning to sprout. This suggests that the shot may be from the past, possibly depicting the farm in its early days. The sky appears darker, perhaps indicating a passage of time, with the once bright blue sky now overcast.

To the left, a woman is partially visible behind the tractor’s equipment. She could be the man’s wife or another worker on the farm, but we can’t be sure based on the limited details in this frame. This shot is significant because it introduces the idea that the farm has grown over time, as indicated by the contrast between the young crops and the older, faded quality of the image.

0:06

An older man, presumably the father of the current farm owner, stands with a young child on the bed of a farm vehicle. The man cradles the child’s head lovingly while leaning against boxes of berries. The scene mirrors the previous frame, suggesting that this is the same man, but now older and with the child grown.

The background reveals a metal farmhouse, likely used to store farm equipment, helping to ground the scene in a farm environment. This frame, in combination with the previous one, starts to suggest that the farm has been passed down through generations, with the man now overseeing it.

0:07

The next frame presents a family photo, likely from the past. The father and mother stand behind their two sons, all dressed in their Sunday best. The boys wear black suits with wide pink ribbons around their waists, while the parents wear business casual attire. The setting appears to be religious, with a white cloth-covered table holding candles in the background. Two potted plants flank the family, and the sky outside is a deep midnight blue, indicating the photo was likely taken at night.

Though the specific religion is not identified, this scene seems to emphasize the family’s religious and moral values, highlighting the familial bonds that connect generations. This suggests that the farm’s legacy is not only about agriculture but also about the values passed down through the family.

0:08

Here, we learn that the current farm owner’s name is Marshall, and that he is a fifth-generation farmer. He and his wife are seated side by side, with the wife looking at him seriously. Marshall seems to be speaking about something important, possibly to an interviewer off-screen, as suggested by his focus and the wife’s intense gaze.

Behind them, two large wooden doors with wide window panes lead to a view of the farm, visible under a sunny sky. This likely indicates that they are inside their home on the farm. As the wife looks away and down, her expression tightens slightly, suggesting the weight of whatever conversation is taking place.

0:09

The couple is back in the frame, hand in hand, walking through the farm once more. They wear the same attire as earlier, walking together in the same direction, and once again look relaxed and content. The background is unchanged, with the blue sky and tree line suggesting continuity. This moment seems to imply that whatever difficult conversation took place in the previous scene is now behind them, as they move forward, together, toward a brighter future.

0:10-0:11

The camera focuses on the crops at eye level as the couple walks along the rows. The man looks down at the plants, a small smile on his face, as if taking pride in his work. The sun is bright, casting light on the crops and the black sheet beneath them, reinforcing the theme of growth and nurturing.

0:12

The couple bends down to inspect the crops together. The man reaches out to touch a berry plant while the wife watches him with a small smile, suggesting her support and enjoyment of this shared moment. Her relaxed expression conveys ease and comfort, as they both take in the fruits of their labor.

0:13-0:14

The camera focuses on the man’s hand, gently cradling a single strawberry. His face is not visible, but the shot emphasizes the tactile nature of farming—his hands-on connection to the crops he has nurtured. The blurred background of the farm reinforces the idea that his work is deeply rooted in the land.

0:15-0:16

A weathered trailer-like building appears to the right, with a small wooden shack to the left. The trees continue to grow behind them, suggesting the farm’s long-standing presence. The focus is now on the wife, Taylor, who is identified in the bottom left corner as the farm’s agronomist. She looks at her husband, then turns her gaze downward toward the crops, possibly contemplating the farm’s future or reflecting on the work they’ve done. The blurred presence of her husband in the background emphasizes her role as the speaker in this moment.

0:17-0:18

Two large, old trees frame the shot, their towering presence symbolizing the farm’s generational history. Marshall leans against one of the trees, looking out over the rows of crops. The vibrant green vegetation suggests that the farm is flourishing, the result of years of care and attention. The trees in the background add a sense of continuity, linking the past and present.

0:19-0:20

The side profile of Marshall’s face is visible, a small smile on his lips as he gazes into the distance. The misty lens effect behind him softens the background, further symbolizing the connection between the farmer and the land. The lush green trees and the sturdy bark of the tree he rests on represent the strength of his roots, both literally and figuratively.

0:21

Marshall walks alone down the rows of crops, taking each step with purpose. This marks a shift, where he once walked with his wife, he now walks alone, symbolizing his individual path. The camera also reveals their white ranch-style house in the background, suggesting that he is continuing to carry the farm forward, both as a person and as part of a legacy.

0:22-0:24

Marshall and Taylor sit in matching rocking chairs on their front porch, smiling at their young daughter, who is playfully clapping her hands between them. A small toddler-sized rocking chair with an image of a red farmhouse between them might symbolize the future of the farm—the next generation that will continue the legacy.

Behind them is the white siding of their house, suggesting they are in a familiar, homely space, perhaps a moment of family togetherness at the end of a long day. The child’s playful energy contrasts with the quiet, enduring nature of the farm, symbolizing a hopeful future where the next generation might carry on the family legacy.

0:24-0:27

The family walks together, with Marshall holding their daughter on his hip, while Taylor walks beside them, her hand intertwined with his. The sun shines brightly, illuminating their path and creating a sense of optimism for the future. Taylor gazes lovingly at her husband, while he looks ahead, focused on the journey that lies before them. The family’s unity and shared joy are evident, signaling a peaceful and prosperous future.

As they walk through the farm, away from the crops, they pass through a patch of bright green grass, and a large, slightly untamed tree stands overhead. This tree might symbolize the older generations watching over them, providing a sense of protection and continuity as they move forward in life. The tree’s ragged appearance contrasts with the family’s vibrant energy, but together, they suggest the passing of wisdom and the strength of familial roots.

0:27-0:30

The screen fades to white, and the words “Love, your mind” appear in bold letters, accompanied by the statement, “Find mental health resources at Loveyourmindtoday.org.” The text makes it clear that the ad’s central message is about mental health, encouraging viewers to seek out support. At the bottom of the screen, the logo for the Huntsman Mental Health Institute is displayed, reinforcing the focus on mental well-being.

This final moment shifts the tone from the family’s narrative to the overarching message of the ad, tying the importance of family and legacy to the broader theme of mental health. The farm, a symbol of hard work, continuity, and connection to the land, is used as a metaphor for mental resilience, encouraging viewers to take care of themselves and their mental health just as they would care for the land and their loved ones.

A couple faces the camera in the focal point of the portrait.

—I’m confused. Are they posing for a portrait?
    —Is this a closeup?
—It might be, even though you’re about to mention the sky.
—We take it they’re outdoors, though you haven’t said so.
—Are they man and woman? Human? Of roughly the same age and attractiveness?
—In other words, on what basis did you assume “couple”?

The sky above is reminiscent of early morning,

—Has the camera moved back to show the sky, or to show more of the sky?
—Or is this still the same shot?
—We must be looking at a wide enough shot to see more than just the sky.
—Which leads me to ask again, are we looking at a landscape with two people, or are we looking at a portrait with a bit of surrounding detail?

and the lush surroundings indicate a summer time feel. To the ground below the couple, numerous crops are sprouted, indicating that we’re most likely at a farm.

—Are they a couple who own a farm?
—Is this a “portrait of a farming couple”?
—Or do their “city clothes” indicate they’re a couple of agri-tourists out for a look at the “rural lifestyle” or day-pickers here to choose their own strawberries as a fresh-air outing?
—You may not be able to tell yet, but I am in NO POSITION to judge since I’m depending on you for everything I know, and you’re not telling me much.

Notably, both the man and woman wear pink, a possible stylistic choice to indicate that they feel the same about something, or that they’re on the same page.

    —Both in tutus, are they?
—Or is she in a pink pants-suit while he’s donned a pink tie for his dress suit to acknowledge Breast Cancer month?

About what, we can’t be too sure of, not yet.

—Maybe not, but we could probably eliminate a few possibilities.

Dressed comfortably for the nice day, they wear pleasant smiles, indicating they’re at ease and comfortable.

    —See what I’m getting at?

Looking ahead just a tiny bit, I see you’ve drawn some VERY BIG CONCLUSIONS in the split second following your latest report:

Hand in hand, the couple walk between their crops on a dirt path, the audience sees them from the back as they walk forward. Their crops surround them on either side, healthy and vibrant.

At what point did you decide they were a couple who owned this particular farm?

This grade and your Reflective Statement grade are killing your Portofolio grade (no small matter). The fixes aren’t that complicated, but your Final Grade Conference is 10am MON DEC 16, and I’m busy with people who need WAYYYY more help than you.

So, if you’re going to revise, do so before I don’t have time to read your revisions.
