Sort, Type, Kind

Interchangeable Terms

We use the words sort, type, and kind to identify categories of entities: this sort of problem; that type of wine; that kind of outfielder.

The words are interchangeable. There is no difference between:

  • that sort of person,
  • that type of person, and
  • that kind of person.

To Identify True Categories

The only common trouble with the singulars of these words is misapplying them to individuals of an unimportant, nonexistent, non-exclusive, or irrelevant category. For example:

  • He’s the sort of person who always arrives on time.

While it’s true that some people are prompt and others tardy, if the only characteristic in question in promptness, being on time hardly qualifies as a sort of person. The simple and correct way to describe a prompt person is:

  • He was always on time.

On the other hand, there could arguably be a type of person who is never on time and who doesn’t apologize for being late but who flies into a frenzy when others are late. We might describe him thus:

  • He was the type who expected from others good conduct he never displayed.

That combination of characteristics clearly distinguishes him from more than three quarters of the human race, making him a type.

Trouble with Singulars and Plurals

The other common problem is to confuse this kind with these kinds.

Compare these correct usages . . .

  • As the manager, he was asked to decide whether the refreshments should come from the operating budget or the entertainment budget although this kind of decision was usually made by the finance committee.
    • (True because only one decision is made.)
  • During his time as manager, he had to approve wages, draft an annual budget, and negotiate the terms of a mortgage although these kinds of decisions were usually made by the finance committee.
    • (True because the decisions about wages, budgets, and mortgages are of different types.)
  • Every aid recipient receives financial assistance; the only difference is the kind of aid they receive.
    • (True if some receive grants while others receive loans, two kinds of aid.)

. . . to these incorrect usages:

  • Every aid recipient receives financial assistance; the only difference is the kind of aid they receive.
    • (False if some receive large grants while others receive small grants, just one kind of aid in different amounts.)
  • Some pitches start outside and break in on the batter, while others start in tight and break away; these types of differences make the batter’s job much harder.
    • (Incorrect because only one type of difference is identified.)

Aeks, you’re entirely right to call #42 CORRECT. It isn’t at all grammatically incorrect. Identifying correct grammar is the first part of this exercise. Good work.

      42. CORRECT: However, if they change their style to meet each patient’s needs, looking at them as a human being, it makes all the difference. This kind of care could benefit everyone, from the most resistant BPD patient to the scared college student.

I agree. Now, if you’re willing, the more important part begins. What is the argument or persuasive value of “This kind of care”? As the subject of the second sentence, it claims that a particular type of care “could benefit everyone.” But what is that type exactly? Grammatically, it’s the type in which caregivers “change their style to meet each patient’s needs, looking at them as a human being.” Two words, “this kind” represent all that language.

That second sentence could be MUCH more persuasive by rephrasing all that language in a more memorable, bite-sized way. For example: “Individually responsive care could benefit everyone, from the most resistant BPD patient to the scared college student.”

Again, you weren’t wrong to call the sentence CORRECT. It is. But the bigger lesson here is that vague language like “this sort of” or “this kind of” can always be replaced with much more effective, more specific language.

      Your response?
      I always appreciate interaction.

There are many different food labels: “sugar free” “whole grain” and even “all-natural”; these all seem like very useful indicators of what product to buy; that is, if they were accurate.

Money, however, is a middle man.

Unless you’re going to distinguish between kinds or types or forms of middle man, you should avoid the words kind, and type, and form.

But really, it’s pretty counterintuitive that a test like this can discover how much motivation people seem to have.
