0:00 The ad starts with what seems to be a family of four coming out of a modern day house. The camera pans out slowly showing the house a few feet behind them. The house looks like it is kept clean because there is no spiderwebs or dirt to be seen anywhere. It is made out of bricks and siding showing how modern it is and that this could be placed in an urban area. The door is in the middle of the bricks, it looks expensive by being all white with three windows that is good quality. This house and the area it is in could mean that the family is a part of the middle class. There is two adults, which seems to be the mother and father, and then two little kids that seem to be the children of these adults. The father is carrying multiple things out the of the house. He is carrying a stroller, stuffed animals, a diaper bag, a coat, and a thermal cup. This is shows that he cares very much for his family, since he is carrying all the weight. He is also looking out into the distance to the left with a very pleased/calm look. The other adult shown, what seems to be the mother, looks a little flustered, but at the same time pleased as well. She is carrying a child and bag in one hand and in the other she is carrying a gogosqueeze and cup. With the amount of stuff both parents are carrying, it shows that they are most likely in a rush to leave the house. Another child is shown just behind, but in the middle of the two adults. This child looks older, for she is taller and is walking by herself, but seems shy because she has a straight face and is partially hiding behind her father. All of them seem to be very well kept, because they look like they are wearing good quality clothing that is very clean.

0:01 The family continues walking out of the house, allowing the camera to gain a little more area coverage of the house. It shows bushes, that looked trimmed and a roof/gutter that is cleaned from everything. The child that was walking in-between the parents now is taking the lead while smiling. This suggest she is happy on where she is going and can’t wait. The father looks down at the child with a smirk on his face. The mother looks off into the distance having the same pleased look the father had just before. With both of the parents doing this it shows they have accomplished what they wanted, like getting out the house with everything they needed on a good time.

0:02-0:03 There is a zoom in on the mother figure, emphasizing her pleased look. Her hair looks done, but the top right of her hair is swooped to the left side; it looks like it is on the wrong side. This seems like she was rushing to get something done, like getting the kids together. She probably moved her head fast, which in result moved her hair to accidentally swoop the wrong way.

0:04 The camera quickly pans back out to show the whole family again walking a little further away from the house. Their walking is pretty slow. The slow walking shows that they feel empowered/accomplished in being able to leave the house with everything needed. The daughter and father are in the same position as 0:01, but the father’s mouth is open suggesting that he is talking to his daughter. The other child, which looks like to be a boy the way he is dressed in a collared shirt has a straight face while being carried by the mother.

0:05 The camera then quickly pans onto the daughter. The diaper bag that the father is carry has baby chain toys connected to the side of it. The daughter is pulling at one as if she is begging for something. She looks at her dad begging look as she tugs at the toy.

0:06 The camera pulls back out to the family, which then shows the father losing grip of the stroller in his hand. He has a peace of bread in his mouth and is trying to keep the stroller in his hand. The daughter looks as if she is laughing, the son is smiling, and the mother looks stressed/concerned. This is showing that the father is carrying much more than he can handle, this can be seen physically, which can correlate with his mental state too.

0:07 The camera moves back to the mother showing her concern of the father. It looks as though she wants to help, but can’t because her hands are full as well.

0:08-0:09 At this point, the camera moves back out on the whole family showing the father struggle with the stroller and the mother struggling with holding the son in her arm. Both things are slipping down, but they continue to try to keep holding them. The father and mother are flustered. The camera then zooms in on the mom’s face and her son in her arm. The son looks happy, he probably is enjoying what is happening because it is like a ride. The mother looks as if she is struggling, but trying to keep him in her arm.

0:10 The camera turns back to the father, showing the diaper bag coming off his shoulder and onto his forearm. Everything is slowing falling down their arms, but they keep holding everything. This could represent that they are trying to keep everything together, but things still are slowly falling a part.

0:11 The daughter is seen pulling at the same toy on the diaper bag as her dad struggles to carry it with his forearm. The mother is smiling or even laughing as she keeps trying to hold her son in her arm.

0:12 The camera zooms back in oil the father as he shoves a a round peace of bread in his mouth. He is now behind the other family members lagging behind a few steps.

0:13 The camera angle then switches to the bottom portion of his legs: his knees and down. A toy is on the ground to the left, which is probably because he dropped it. This shows how unorganized he is, for he is carrying too much than he can handle is is dropping it.

0:14-0:15 Now it shows the front angle of the family angle. This time the daughter is leading in front, with the mother and son following behind her, and the father crouched over behind them struggling. Everyone seems to be happy, but him.

0:16 The family finally reaches a gray sporty van. This is most likely their car. The daughter drops her book bag and toy on the concert right next to the car. This shows she doesn’t car what is going on and just wants to do whatever she wants to. The mother waits at the passenger side door.

0:17 From a side angle at the back of the car, it shows the door to the car sliding open and the girl waiting to go in. She looks happy, which shows she is exited to leave. The father is right behind her waiting for her to go into the car.

0:18 The camera switches to the mother and son. The mother is putting the son in the car.

0:19 Now the camera is back on the father and daughter. The father is reaching down to buckle the daughter into her toddler carseat as she eats something that is in a bowl. They are both smiling. The smile of the father implies he cares very much for his daughter’s safety.

0:20-0:21 The camera angle switches the fathers hands buckling his daughters buckle; only the buckle and his hands are in frame. He makes sure each point in the buckle is pushed in. This emphasizes the safety.

0:22 The camera is back at the angle of facing the daughter and father. It shows the daughter moving her bowl up and down, causing the food to come out. His face looks like it is prepared to get hit by some of the food because his eyes are closed and he has his mouth open. The daughter is smiling/laughing about this. This implies she gets away with doing this type of behavior.

0:23 The camera comes back to the mother and son, but this time the daughter is also in it because they are in the car. The mother is buckling the son’s seat as the daughter is blurred out, smiling toward the camera. This suggests the dad is where the camera is and that the focal point is the mother and son. Mainly how the mother is buckling her son for his safety.

0:24-0:25 Just as the camera zoom on the hands of the father and the daughter’s seat buckle, it does the same for the mother and the son’s seat buckle. She makes sure each point of the buckle is pushed in, again emphasizing the saftey of the seatbelt.

0:26-0:30 The scene fades into a blue background showing 4 different types of carseats/seatbelts. Showing the importance of a seatbelt and the correct carseat. The ad finishes.

Overview: The scene opens up with a family that has a bunch of stuff in their hands, which implies that they are rushing to get out the house. The scene is also in slow motion, which suggests that they are confident and pleased with everything they have going on. As they make their way to their car there is a constant struggle to hold everything that they have in their hands; the materials and the son in the mother’s arm especially. The daughter was shy when she first came out the house, but quickly became full of happy emotions as they walked to their car implying she was happy to go somewhere. The son was young, so there wasn’t much emotion to him. With them all getting to the car and the children finally getting buckled in, the camera zoomed in on the buckling portion. This highlights the importance of a seatbelt. The carseats themselves are also different between the two children, which suggest that the carseats are an important factor. Depending on age and weight, the carseat should change. All in all, what seems to be the main focus point is parents caring for their children, especially in the car with making sure their seatbelts are on correctly.

The ad starts with what seems to be a family of four coming out of a modern day house. We can presume this because the two adults are roughly the same age, both holding baby stuff, both African American, and even roughly dressed the same. They look as if they are leaving the house, which we can infer because they are facing the street and not the front door. The father is carrying multiple things out the of the house. He is carrying a stroller, stuffed animals, a diaper bag, a coat, and a thermal cup. This shows that he cares very much for his family, since he is carrying all the weight. He is also looking out into the distance to the left with a very pleased/calm look. The other adult shown, what seems to be the mother, looks a little flustered, but at the same time pleased as well. We can tell this because of the facial expressions she makes. Also, this looks like this is their house because of the way they are coming out of it all roughly. If they were more put together, I would suspect they are coming out of a relatives house because they were ready to leave. With this, it looks like a tornado hit them, and they are in a rush to be somewhere like a trip or outing due to everything they are holding.

Her hair looks done. As she is walking with the family and her hands are full, she flips her hair to the left side. Since she has no hands, she had to use her head to move her hair out of her face. The hair flip looks as if it signifies that she felt accomplished. With all of them coming out of the house in a little rush, the hair flip looks like “I got this!”, which again shows how great she was feeling in the moment. Since she is also look straight a head while doing this, it is as though she is performing for an audience to show the confidence she has in completing a task; even if done messily.

0:04 The camera quickly pans back out to show the whole family again walking a little further away from the house. They are walking is pretty slow.

The daughter is pulling at one, as if she is begging for something. She looks at her dad with an expression that she is curious, so we can infer that she is begging to know where they are going.

During this time as well, the  father is looking at the ground. He might be looking for or at the bread that he dropped or anything else he was holding. This all indicates that they are messy and unorganized because nothing is staying in their hands/arms correctly.

0:12 The camera zooms back in on the father as he magically has his piece of bread again, which then he puts in his mouth to hold.

The daughter is most likely leading because she wants to get to the destination first. She has a happy expression, which could be for the fact that she is first and is only carrying one toy.

0:16 The family finally reaches a gray sporty van. This is most likely their car because they are getting into it with all of their belongings.. The daughter drops her book bag and toy on the concrete right next to the car. This shows she doesn’t care what is going on and just wants to do whatever she wants to as well as that she is used to her family cleaning up after her. . The mother waits at the passenger side door.

0:17 From a side angle at the back of the car, it shows the door to the car sliding open and the girl waiting to go in. She looks happy, which shows she is excited to leave.

This emphasizes the safety and importance for fastening the car seat accurately.

While this is going on, the camera is still seems to be highlighting the car seat because of the side angle it has taken. This again shows that the daughter is securely fastened into the car seat.

0:23 The camera comes back to the mother and son, but this time the daughter is also in it because they are in the car. The mother is buckling the son’s seat as the daughter is blurred out, smiling toward the camera. This suggests the dad is where the camera is and that the focal point is the mother and son. The seat is facing backwards, which is the correct way for an infant/small toddler. This again is to show the safety precautions the parents are taking, in order to get the main idea across that car seats, their seatbelts, and the way the seats are facing is important.

0:24-0:25 Just as the camera zoom on the hands of the father and the daughter’s seat buckle, it does the same for the mother and the son’s seat buckle. She makes sure each point of the buckle is pushed in, again emphasizing the saftey of the seatbelt. With this zoom in of her hand, we can see a diamond ring on her ring finger, which supports that these two adults are married.

Depending on age and weight, the carseat should change. All in all, what seems to be the main focus point is parents caring for their children, especially in the car with making sure their seatbelts are on correctly. Even with all the chaos that happened while they were getting to the car, they still showed how small things, like a car seat and buckling a seat belt, is important.

Visual Rewrite- Elongated Lobster

0:00- The very opening scene begins by showing a young teenager sitting on his bed while playing on some sort of video game console. The room is neat but cluttered with posters, books, trophies, and other things similar to that. Almost everything in the room is some variation of blue and white, from the carpet, to the wall paint, to the blankets. This opening scene shows that this young teen is no different than any other, most likely to make him more relatable to a larger audience.

0:01- A taller man in a suit now enters the room wearing a gray suit and both the man and the suit seem to have a light-red tint. The man entering the room immediately grasps the attention of the young teen and has him looking up showing his awareness to what is going on around him despite being in the middle of a game.

0:02- There is a cut to switch to the point of view of the teenager on the bed, focusing in only on the man. The taller man has a glitch of sorts similar to one that you would see on an older television set when the antenna is having issues. This would explain the red tint to the man as it appears as if he is pulled out of an older television. The man also begins to speak to the young teenager in a manner that makes him seem like he is trying to inform him of something. This could be as a way to show that some methods of informing or convincing the youth from back then still work now. The man has closed fists and a slightly forward-leaning posture, which is similar to what some people do when they are trying to read off of a teleprompter, or when they are nervous and trying to focus. Given the image that the man is pulled out of an older television, the teleprompter idea fits within this theme.

0:06- The camera is now cut back to only the teenager looking up from what looks to be his phone with a look of bewilderment. The teen is sitting on his bed in a comfortable position but begins to shift his eyes around the room as if he is wondering if anyone else is seeing what he is. This shows that the teen is both confused and uncomfortable from this man appearing when he was comfortable only a few seconds prior.

0:08- There is another cut back to the man in the suit where is he still speaking to the teenager but this time, he has one hand near the top button of his suit as he is talking with his hand now like he is continuing to explain something. The hand movements and the man’s overall appearance feels more and more out of place in the video, almost as if it is far outdated and whatever he is saying may be irrelevant, or in the case that he is convincing the teen of something, ineffective.

0:12- A close up of the man is now shown, which gives a better look at the way he is dressed, as well as his hand movements. As far as the way he is dressed goes, the man is wearing glasses with frames that feel very much so out of the 1980s as well as the fact that he is wearing a tie clip, something that is not typically seen all that much today, especially with younger people. This could be highlighting the fact that whatever the man is saying is, in fact, outdated and may make it difficult to reach the teen and get him to agree or understand.

0:13- The man holds up a model pair of lungs in the middle of his speech, which indicates that whatever he is arguing for or against can affect the lungs. This makes sense given the topic of the video is youth vaping prevention. This could be showing that the man is from an educational video from the 1980s or 1990s that is showcasing the affects of vaping, or rather smoking as vaping was not really around until the 2000s, to the body.

0:14- The camera cuts back to the teenager who is still holding his phone, with his eyes still looking as if he is wondering what is even happening. Him still holding his phones indicates that the man does not really have his full attention, but rather he is only looking because he is completely lost as to what he is doing there and what is going on.

0:16- The camera is back to the man as he pulls down a poster with the inscription, “THE FACTS ABOUT VAPING” that shows a man with a vape floating in front of his mouth with arrows pointing from his throat to his lungs. The man is also now pointing at the poster as if to draw the teen’s attention to it to ensure he does not miss it. This makes it more clear that he is trying to show the teen both the facts and the affects of vaping.

0:18- The man shifts his point from the poster to the teen sitting on the bed. This might indicate that the man is telling the boy to learn the facts and affects of vaping and that it is important to know them and take heed of them.

0:23- Letters appear on the screen over the man that say, “The health class film guy isn’t the best person to talk to your kid about vaping.” This confirms that the man was talking about the affects of vaping and that the teen needs to learn about them. This also indicates that there may soon be a shift in the video where the man may leave the room and showing a parental figure or guardian that is better suited to reach the teen and to connect with him more. If this is not the case, then it would be strange to say that you should not do something or that something is faulty and then not offer a solution.

0:24- The camera cuts to the teen once again where he looks to be almost falling asleep, confirming that this is an outdated and ineffective way to communicate the affects of vaping to the youth. There is then a sudden switch where the teen’s eyes open wide and almost light up at something in his room. This could be the parental figuring coming in to talk about the affects of vaping.

0:25- The teen’s mother appears in the doorway with a smile as the words, “You are” come onto the screen. This confirms that the video is saying that the best way to educate youth on vaping and its affects is through a person to person talk with someone that they trust, where they can feel the connection and meaning behind what they are saying rather than simply spitting facts out to him.

0:26- The mom walks over to the teen sitting on the bed and joins him in sitting down while also turning to him. This shows that she is going to talk to him, presumably about the topic of vaping and the affects of it. There is also a contrast here between the mother and the man in the suit. The man in the suit is standing above the teen and in front of him almost talking down to him and out of reach while the teen’s mother walks up to him and joins him on the bed, showing that they are on equal level here in the conversation and that she is not just reachable, but also willing to make that connection and open up to him.

0:29- The video ends with the mother beginning to talk to the teen on the bed which leaves it off on a good note as the boy has his phone down and is also facing his mother on the bed. This shows that she has his full attention and that he is ready to talk about this and is comfortable doing so.

Visual Rhetoric – Unicorn45678

0:01

The setting takes place in a classroom, not too many decorations just basic and plain, the color of the walls in this classroom is a cream color. The floor kind of looks like a dark blue carpet. There are 15 desks in the classroom and the chairs are dark blue and the desk color is a light grey. From counting how many desks are in the classroom, I would assume that there would be 15 students in this class. The classroom is very dark, and it looks like the person in the doorway is probably a teacher for this class. The classroom has two boards, one white board and a smart board, above the white is an America flag, and below the boards are three blue chairs facing towards the desks. next to the three blue chairs are a wooden cabinet and a bookshelf, the bookshelf is filled with all sorts of books and papers; On the other wall near the classroom door are three more bookshelves’, there also filled with books and papers. on top of the middle the bookshelf’s is a black clock

0:02

As the lady walks into the classroom, she turns to the light switch to turn the lights on. As the lights turn on the classroom still looks kind of dark but not as dark as it was before. Near the door I notice the little posters. I also noticed that the carpet is not actually dark blue its more so like a dark grey color.

0:03

The camera is moved closer to the women, showing more details of her face, she seems to be in her 40-50s years of age. Shes wearing a bright pink blouse with a sliver necklace, she has a ring of her left ring finger and also hand a watch on that hand as well. Shes looking out the classroom window not really sure what Shes looking at though.

0:06

The camera moves in even closer to her face, the background is blurred out and Shes still looking outside of the window in the classroom.

0:07

The teacher is sitting down at a wooden brown table, the desks that are behind her are in 2 rows line up behind each other, From this angle the classroom looks more darker than before. The lights on the ceiling look old and not as bright as many other lights. The women’s name appears on the bottom left of the screen.

0:08

In this clip the women’s back is faced towards the audience, it seems to me that she is opening curtains that lead to another room, The curtains are slightly open however the background is blurred out so you can really see what’s behind the curtains

0:09

As the curtains open, the setting no longer takes place in a classroom, its more so like a place you would host events at, the floor is a dark blue carpet with yellow ballons on the ground, there are 7 people standing there shouting with their hands in the air, they look excited, it seems like they threw a surprise party for the women that opened the curtains. The place is well decorated, behind the people are big brown curtains and more yellow ballons there are also pictures of the women’s family on the canvas.

0:10

The camera switches back to the teacher, and just by looking at her face you can tell that Shes very happy about her surprise party.

0:12

As the camera switches back to her friends their all happy and it looks like there singing with their hands in the air, The camera moves down and flips back to the teacher

0:13

The women looked at the canvas with all the picture of her and her family, as she’s looking at the pictures she covers her mouth, she seems to be very shocked and also excited at the same time. There are more yellow ballons on the left side of her.

0:14

The camera starts to zoom out, showing more of the picture, in total there are 8 canvases, 4 on the left and 4 on the right.

0:15

The camera flips back to her friends showing a man and a women standing next to each other. The man is wearing circle glasses, he’s wearing a suit, and he looks very happy to be there. The women standing next to him has straight black hair and she is wearing a white dress, and she also looks happy to be there for her friend as well.

0:16-0:19

The women start to hug all of her friends, thanking them for surprising her, the camera switches to a picture of the women in a yellow gown and stand in the middle of her 2 sons. Another picture is taken with the women and all of her friends that came to support her. The women is holding a yellow book, on the book it looks like it says congratulations on graduating.

0:20

All the people that were at this event finally take a group picture with the teacher to congratulate her for graduating.

0:24

As we can a closer view of the yellow book it says at the bottom left ” When you graduate,” and at the bottom right of the book it says, “They graduate”.

0:26-0:30

As the video ends the camera comes back to the classroom, However the classroom is blurred out, on the screen there’s a text, The text says “Finish your diploma.org, find free and supportive adult education centers near you”

Reflection: Overall, I feel like there wasn’t much to write about with the different settings. The only setting that I could really get a lot of information and details from was when the setting took place in the classroom. The classroom provides a lot of objects to talk about, however in the other settings it was really plain.

Visual Rhetoric Argument- RoboFrog

[0:01-0:04]

Scene – Red background with red blood cells, white ovals, and blue Y-shaped things in it, and a blackboard with green lines on it, woman in blue wearing a headset and baseball cap, talking and turning her head, blue shoulders on either side of her.

Analysis – The background implies that this scene is taking place inside a body, the woman appears to be in charge of a meeting, her attire is that of a coach. All of this together so far gives the impression that they are a team of athletes preparing for practice or a game inside a body.

[0:05-0:06]

Scene – Pale blue lockers in background, red background to the right of the lockers, nervous guy in blue outfit that has a gold badge on the front saying antibodies, to the right of him a person in a blue jacket with the same badge on its sleeve

Analysis – The lockers imply that is the changing area and that the team is called the ANTIBODIES. All of this together still gives the impression that they are a team of athletes preparing for practice or a game inside a body.

[0:07]

Scene – Red background with red blood cells, white ovals, and blue Y-shaped things in it, and more of the blackboard with different colored lines on it is showing, two people in it a woman who is closer to the camera and a man further back to the left. The positioning of everything suggests that people in it are to the right of the woman in blue wearing a headset and baseball cap.

Analysis – The positioning of everything in this is making me reconsider if my first impression of what is going is wrong because it is clear now none of the people in the ad so far are actually looking at the blackboard where the plays would be located. This might be a work meeting at the start of the workday instead.

[0:08]

Scene – Goes back to the woman wearing a headset and baseball cap talking at a different angle that shows part of the face of the person to the left of her and less of the blackboard to the right.

Analysis – This scene does not appear to visually add anything important to the ad.

[0:09-0:11]

Scene – Zooms out from a yellow band aid to show the whole person, his surroundings, and a caption with his name, Anthony at an angle. Anthony is wearing a button-down t-shirt, jeans, sneakers, and is reading a book, beside him on the bench he is relaxing on is a green bottle and a white pair of headsets, on the ground in front of the bench rests his backpack. His surroundings are a bunch of benches along a path, shrubby and a fence behind the benches and people on the benches away from him.

Analysis – Outside the possibility that Anthony’s body is where the meeting is taking place, this does not really match up with what has been seen so far. However, based on Anthoy’s location, I don’t think the meeting is a work meeting at the start of the workday because it appears to be the middle of the day. Also, Anthony appears to be in good health.

[0:12-0:15]

Scene – Same area as in previous scene, except it is showing the front view and is focused in on the bench Anthony is on and has a circle to the right of him showing various people. The first person is the woman wearing a headset and baseball cap as she is talking then switches to the nervous guy who is taking a deep breath in, then shows a guy who is excited, but Anthony is not reacting to any of them. Also, the camera is slowly zooming in on Anthony.

Analysis – I think the point of this scene is to reinforce the connection between the meeting and Anthony. Also, I think based on how the people being shown in the circle are acting, the meeting is coming to an end, and they are going to get started on whatever they are doing. Based on evidence from the previous scenes coupled with the facial expressions that the people in the circle, I feel confident in my impression that the meeting appears to be of a team of athletes, rather than a work meeting.

[0:16]

Scene – Same area as in previous scene slowly zooming in on Anthony, except it switches to having the circle with a different person at the meeting looking at something not visible and the circle expanding until it covers the whole screen. At this point it is clear they are looking at one of the lockers located near the meeting and is going to open it.

Analysis – This implies that the meeting is now over and they going to get ready for what is going to happen in the body next.

[0:17-0:19]

Scene – The people are putting on gear, a yellow helmet that says FLU SHOT on the front and a yellow piece of foam that has a hole for the head and is V-shaped on both sides and also says FLU SHOT on the front.

Analysis – The appearance of a different name on the equipment they are putting on raises the question of what the team is supposed to be called because the ANTIBODIES badge is more colorful and more in line with what a team logo usually like but is entirely covered up by the vest like piece of foam.

[0:20]

Scene – Goes to the woman wearing a headset and baseball cap as she is talking, there are two people fully geared up on either of her at the edges of the view, but the one on the right gets cut off as the camera moves slightly towards the woman wearing a headset and baseball cap.

Analysis – The scene gives the impression that the woman is giving a last-minute pep talk to her team.

[0:21-0:30]

Scene – Members of the team in their full gear are shown celebrating with the words “DEFEND AGAINST THE FLU GEAR UP WITH A FLU SHOT” superimposed over them in bold white letters.

Analysis – The impression that this scene gives is that getting the flu vaccine is equivalent to winning on game day.

Overview:

A team of athletes are having a meeting to prepare for their game. The ad briefly shows a person relaxing outside with a circle to the right of him that shows different members of the team briefly showing one before switching to a different one. The meeting then ends, and the players put on their gear for the game. The ad ends with the athletes celebrating their victory with words superimposed over them implying that their victory is equivalent to getting a flu shot. Also, the ad implies that the people in it are the antibodies in the body, the game is the body fighting off the flu, the gear they put on represents the aid the flu shot gives antibodies in fighting the flu, and the stadium where the game is being held is the human body.

Analysis of effectiveness of visuals after watching the video with sound:

The visuals are relatively effective by themselves at getting the overall idea of the ad of getting the flu vaccine across by the end of it. However, with sound they get more effectively and quicker then without it. Also, it clarifies why they are showing the person when they do. Another thing that the sound adds is details that were not obvious from visuals alone like the people being a security team which makes more sense than an athletic team like I thought they were.

0:01-0:02

In the first few seconds of the film, we see pitch black darkness which typically always symbolizes something dark/sad or even indicating the past. It seems to be a dark room. There is a guy in the first second of the video, the camera zooms into him to specify that he is important and is there for a reason. He is dressed with what seems to be a leather jacket and he looks fairly young maybe 21-22. Behind the guy is a huge number one sign that has a light. The number one must be important because it is the only thing highlighted in this clip. Everything else has no color and is dark. It shines behind the man, guiding my focus from him to view what is behind him and why.

0:02-0:03

In the next two seconds of the video, the setting changes to a young man getting into his car. The young man has on a sweatshirt and sweatpants and has messy hair so maybe he just came from home but, judging by the cars parked next to his he could have been out at a store. The guy in this clip could have been running errands and is now trying to hurry into his car to get to his next destination. It seems like he is in a hurry judging by the way he swings the door open and how fast he gets into his car. This clip has light and color I am able to see what color clothes he has, the color of the sky which looks grey and dull and his car color. This to me indicates is in the present and is happening now. The setting then flips back to the dark room with no color only pitch black darkness but, this time there is a different person. This time there is a young girl. I would say she is 19 by the way she is dressed. She has a cute white sweater and jeans on something every teenage girl is wearing these days. She seems emotionless judging by the blank facial expression she has. Behind her there is a shining light, it’s a huge number 2. The numbers are going by order. The first clip started at number 1 and is now at 2. For every one of these numbers there has been a person in front of them. This could mean that this is their specific number. The camera then switches back to the clip of the guy in the sweatshirt getting into his car. In this clip it zooms into him inserting the key into the car and twisting it. The camera angle shows the letters on the car key. It says engine, run, ACC, or start. The guy twists his key all the way to the start and starts up his car, maybe to drive to his next destination.

0:04-0:05

The camera flips to the dark room again. This time showing a different person. He looks young maybe 18-19. He has on a t-shirt and a beanie hat. Behind him is the number 3 shining through. 3 seems to be his number. The camera then zooms into his face. He doesn’t have any expression on his face either, but judging by his eyes he seems sad like they are watering up.

0:06-0:08

The camera flips back to the guy in the car. This time it shows him pulling the gear shift all the way back to presumably drive. The camera shows his hands pulling the gear shift with force. It could be that he is in a rush so is trying to hurry. The setting then changes back to the dark room. This time with a different person, a woman. She has a shining number 4 behind her. She is the fourth person that has been shown in this room. She also seems young and has on a jacket. When the camera zooms into her face only half of it is shown. Maybe because something happened to the other side.

0:09-0:13

The camera then flips back to the guy in the car. The camera is focusing on the steering wheel and is only showing the steering wheel and his hands moving the wheel. Judging by the way his hands are moving the wheel, it seems like he is moving driving out of somewhere maybe a parking lot and is driving to the road. For a second the camera flips back to the dark room. This time a different guy is shown with a shining number 5 behind him. Just as the rest of them he stands there with no expression. The camera then switches back to guy in the car. This time it is at a low angle. It captures the entire car side on a road and a house behind it. The car seems to be going fast judging by how quick the angles changed. Then the camera proceeds to show a slight second of the back to the car. Showing that the car is going by quick. After this scene the camera pans back to the dark room again with a different person. This time a different girl and a different number 6. She seems younger than the others judging by her small face and wavy hair. The camera zooms into her face as well, this girl ism staring into the camera like the others but instead at a higher angle.

0:14-0:17

The camera the flips back to the guy in the same car. This time the angle of the camera focuses on the brake. The camera is pointed directly at the car brake and shows the guy slamming his sneakers into the break. He could’ve stopped too late, almost hit a car, or was distracted and wasn’t paying close attention. The next second the camera setting changes and shows a different older guy in the dark room. He is number 7. The camera quickly flips back to the guy in the car he is still driving but this time the camera zooms into his rear view mirror. The guy seems to be tired/sleepy judging by his droopy eyes and his finger movement that was shown. His finger was used for a second to hold his face while he was driving almost as if it was to keep his face up. The camera then flips to the dark room again. It shows the same guy that was shown as number 7 but this time he is carrying a baby. There is a number 8 behind the both of them indicating the baby is number 8.

0:18-0:20

The camera pans back to the guy in the car. This time zooming in on his eyes. In this frame all we can see is the top half of his face and half of his hair. The camera zooms into this for a reason so that we can pay close attention to his eyes and where they are looking. The camera then pans to his phone which is in his hand. Two messages from “Mom” are shown on his lock screen which means he hasn’t opened them yet. One message says “Where are you” and the other “You’re gonna miss it” which is why this guy could have been in such a hurry because he needed to get to an other destination. The camera shows him unlocking his phone presumably to answer and the Fram goes back to the top half of his face showing that his eyes went from watching the road to looking down at his phone to respond to the message. As the guy tries to hurry and out his passcode in to unlock his phone and respond, the camera seems to get blurry and shows his hair swaying towards the front for a split second. After this the frame goes black which indicates he crashed because he was on his phone.

0:21-0:25

The screen turns black and shows the words “Every day, too many people die in distracted driving crashes.” The screens turns a bit brighter almost to a grayish and shows the guy in the car entering the frame. Behind him is a number 9. He seems to be lost not knowing where he is which could happen because people don’t realize how fast and fatal a car crash can turn.

0:26-END

The camera then zooms into his face. He has blood on the side of his head dripping from the crash. The words “Don’t drive distracted” appear on the front of his face. The guy fades with the background showing yet another person lost due to a car crash. “Don’t drive distracted” stays on the screen until the end indicating the message they want to get convey.

Overall:

This ad was a bit difficult to describe without the sound but it was possible. While I was analyzing the video and stopping at every second I found things that I wouldn’t have caught onto before. For example the clip of the camera zooming into the guys eyes. I would have not thought anything of it but it was in fact important to highlight and describe because it had a meaning. Overall the video had my attention every second because of clips that subtly showed the message. It reminded me of those gun violence awareness ads for schools where you would be focusing on the main characters storyline but, behind them the message and theme of the video would appear indicating that you weren’t really paying close attention. I think this was a good ad for me to analyze because of how powerful the message is and I really enjoyed describing everything the guy was doing in his car down to the little details. It also really kept my attention with the people and the numbers behind them which meant that they were the number of deaths because of this issue. I do think with sound it would have made it easier but I still enjoyed analyzing the video without sound because it was something new for me.

Visual Rewrite – Softball1321

00:00 Right from the jump, we can see a very happy man with the backseat car door open, obviously buckling in a child. We are unsure if this is his child or not, but the setting seems to be very positive. The sky is clear and blue, and the trees are green. Presumably, this could be taken in the spring time- considering the man is wearing a long sleeve blue flannel.

00:02 This clip panels over to the young boy. It seems he is a toddler, maybe 2 or 3 years old, considering he is talking and able to point his fingers. His car seat is also facing the back of the drivers seat, which may indicate he is the age of 2 or 3. The young boy seems to be very happy with the man he is with, showing he clearly knows him well and is comfortable around him.

00:05 After the man and the young boy are done having a good laugh while playing peek-a-boo, the man is shown buckling in the boy, ensuring safety on the car ride they are about to have.

00:07-00:10 This clip shows a young girl and she is with an older woman, maybe late 30’s or 40’s, indicating it could be her mother. These women are playing basketball in the driveway of their house. These two women are very happy and seem like they know each other well. They take a sip of water to hydrate themselves. Although this isn’t a clip of a parent or guardian strapping in a younger child in a car seat, it indicates happiness and relief, that whatever car seat the women used on her child, kept them safe and happy, and her child was able to grow healthy.

00:12-00:18 This clip shows a young teenage girl opening the passenger seat of her mother’s car, but her mother points for her to sit in the back seat with the kid who is strapped in the car seat. Sitting in the backseat with the child can help keep an eye on him, and make sure he is safe and comfortable, and even to keep him interactive during the ride.

00:20-00:30 These separate clips all show different ages of parents or guardians, and different ages of children being strapped into a car seat that fits perfectly to ensure safety on the ride.

Summary: This video of separate clips all show happiness from the different parent/guardians and children being strapped into car seats. This advertisement uses positive emotions to show the importance of why you should purchase a car seat that fits your child safely and comfortably, which maximizes protection in case of an accident. A properly fitting car seat supports their body correctly, reducing the risk of any possible injuries. Also, clearly shown in this video, if the child is comfortable in their car seat, they are less likely to fuss, making the car ride smoother for everyone.

Rural Mental Health

0:00-0:01

A couple faces the camera, positioned as the focal point of the shot. A portrait of the two and the landscape beyond them. The camera shifted back to reveal more of the scene. Above them, the sky suggests early morning, with soft hues of light indicating a calm, serene atmosphere.

The lush environment around them hints at summer, but there are still uncertainties about the exact setting. Crops are visible beneath them, which might suggest they are on a farm, but we cannot be sure whether these are crops they tend to or simply part of the scene. The couple is dressed in pink, possibly to suggest they’re in harmony with one another, though what they might be “on the same page” about is unclear. At this point, we can’t tell much beyond their casual, comfortable appearance, which suggests they are at ease in their surroundings.

0:01-0:02

Assuming they are a couple, as they walk hand in hand along a dirt path that cuts through rows of crops, with the camera capturing them from behind. The crops are healthy and vibrant, surrounding them on both sides. The sky remains a cool blue with wispy clouds, adding to the serene feeling of the scene. Trees line the foreground, possibly leading into a forest in the distance.

While the couple’s relaxed demeanor further reinforces the peaceful vibe, we still don’t know whether they are the farm’s owners, workers, or visitors. There’s a separate path to the left, marked by two dirt tracks, which could be used by farm machinery. This gives us a clue that the land might be actively worked.

0:02-0:03

The camera shifts focus to the crops in front of the couple as they continue walking. This shift highlights the couple’s connection to their hard work, with the crops serving as a visual representation of their effort. The lush greenery and bright blue sky in the background remain unchanged, reinforcing the theme of growth and prosperity.

To the right, a light wooden structure appears, though it’s not clear what it is. It could be farm equipment or some other functional part of the farm, but no details are provided, leaving its purpose ambiguous.

0:04

The couple faces the camera again, now holding a large white sign that reads “SEWELL BERRY FARMS – Pride of Valrico.” This provides new information: the farm grows berries. The crops in the background, visibly sprouting, reinforce this detail, but it’s becoming more clear that this couple runs this farm. The man smiles broadly at the sign, indicating his pride, while the woman looks off to the left, then back to him with a similar smile. Their shared smiles suggest they are united in their joy, but the reasons for their happiness—whether it’s about the farm or something else—remain unclear. This moment underscores their connection.

0:05

The next frame shifts to a red tractor at the forefront, with a man in a gray cap and shirt sitting at the wheel. He’s presumably a worker on the farm, but his specific role is not specified. The image has a slightly faded, aged quality, with the crops behind him just beginning to sprout. This suggests that the shot may be from the past, possibly depicting the farm in its early days. The sky appears darker, perhaps indicating a passage of time, with the once bright blue sky now overcast.

To the left, a woman is partially visible behind the tractor’s equipment. She could be the man’s wife or another worker on the farm, but we can’t be sure based on the limited details in this frame. This shot is significant because it introduces the idea that the farm has grown over time, as indicated by the contrast between the young crops and the older, faded quality of the image.

0:06

An older man, presumably the father of the current farm owner, stands with a young child on the bed of a farm vehicle. The man cradles the child’s head lovingly while leaning against boxes of berries. The scene mirrors the previous frame, suggesting that this is the same man, but now older and with the child grown.

The background reveals a metal farmhouse, likely used to store farm equipment, helping to ground the scene in a farm environment. This frame, in combination with the previous one, starts to suggest that the farm has been passed down through generations, with the man now overseeing it.

0:07

The next frame presents a family photo, likely from the past. The father and mother stand behind their two sons, all dressed in their Sunday best. The boys wear black suits with wide pink ribbons around their waists, while the parents wear business casual attire. The setting appears to be religious, with a white cloth-covered table holding candles in the background. Two potted plants flank the family, and the sky outside is a deep midnight blue, indicating the photo was likely taken at night.

Though the specific religion is not identified, this scene seems to emphasize the family’s religious and moral values, highlighting the familial bonds that connect generations. This suggests that the farm’s legacy is not only about agriculture but also about the values passed down through the family.

0:08

Here, we learn that the current farm owner’s name is Marshall, and that he is a fifth-generation farmer. He and his wife are seated side by side, with the wife looking at him seriously. Marshall seems to be speaking about something important, possibly to an interviewer off-screen, as suggested by his focus and the wife’s intense gaze.

Behind them, two large wooden doors with wide window panes lead to a view of the farm, visible under a sunny sky. This likely indicates that they are inside their home on the farm. As the wife looks away and down, her expression tightens slightly, suggesting the weight of whatever conversation is taking place.

0:09

The couple is back in the frame, hand in hand, walking through the farm once more. They wear the same attire as earlier, walking together in the same direction, and once again look relaxed and content. The background is unchanged, with the blue sky and tree line suggesting continuity. This moment seems to imply that whatever difficult conversation took place in the previous scene is now behind them, as they move forward, together, toward a brighter future.

0:10-0:11

The camera focuses on the crops at eye level as the couple walks along the rows. The man looks down at the plants, a small smile on his face, as if taking pride in his work. The sun is bright, casting light on the crops and the black sheet beneath them, reinforcing the theme of growth and nurturing.

0:12

The couple bends down to inspect the crops together. The man reaches out to touch a berry plant while the wife watches him with a small smile, suggesting her support and enjoyment of this shared moment. Her relaxed expression conveys ease and comfort, as they both take in the fruits of their labor.

0:13-0:14

The camera focuses on the man’s hand, gently cradling a single strawberry. His face is not visible, but the shot emphasizes the tactile nature of farming—his hands-on connection to the crops he has nurtured. The blurred background of the farm reinforces the idea that his work is deeply rooted in the land.

0:15-0:16

A weathered trailer-like building appears to the right, with a small wooden shack to the left. The trees continue to grow behind them, suggesting the farm’s long-standing presence. The focus is now on the wife, Taylor, who is identified in the bottom left corner as the farm’s agronomist. She looks at her husband, then turns her gaze downward toward the crops, possibly contemplating the farm’s future or reflecting on the work they’ve done. The blurred presence of her husband in the background emphasizes her role as the speaker in this moment.

0:17-0:18

Two large, old trees frame the shot, their towering presence symbolizing the farm’s generational history. Marshall leans against one of the trees, looking out over the rows of crops. The vibrant green vegetation suggests that the farm is flourishing, the result of years of care and attention. The trees in the background add a sense of continuity, linking the past and present.

0:19-0:20

The side profile of Marshall’s face is visible, a small smile on his lips as he gazes into the distance. The misty lens effect behind him softens the background, further symbolizing the connection between the farmer and the land. The lush green trees and the sturdy bark of the tree he rests on represent the strength of his roots, both literally and figuratively.

0:21

Marshall walks alone down the rows of crops, taking each step with purpose. This marks a shift, where he once walked with his wife, he now walks alone, symbolizing his individual path. The camera also reveals their white ranch-style house in the background, suggesting that he is continuing to carry the farm forward, both as a person and as part of a legacy.

0:22-0:24

Marshall and Taylor sit in matching rocking chairs on their front porch, smiling at their young daughter, who is playfully clapping her hands between them. A small toddler-sized rocking chair with an image of a red farmhouse between them might symbolize the future of the farm—the next generation that will continue the legacy.

Behind them is the white siding of their house, suggesting they are in a familiar, homely space, perhaps a moment of family togetherness at the end of a long day. The child’s playful energy contrasts with the quiet, enduring nature of the farm, symbolizing a hopeful future where the next generation might carry on the family legacy.

0:24-0:27

The family walks together, with Marshall holding their daughter on his hip, while Taylor walks beside them, her hand intertwined with his. The sun shines brightly, illuminating their path and creating a sense of optimism for the future. Taylor gazes lovingly at her husband, while he looks ahead, focused on the journey that lies before them. The family’s unity and shared joy are evident, signaling a peaceful and prosperous future.

As they walk through the farm, away from the crops, they pass through a patch of bright green grass, and a large, slightly untamed tree stands overhead. This tree might symbolize the older generations watching over them, providing a sense of protection and continuity as they move forward in life. The tree’s ragged appearance contrasts with the family’s vibrant energy, but together, they suggest the passing of wisdom and the strength of familial roots.

0:27-0:30

The screen fades to white, and the words “Love, your mind” appear in bold letters, accompanied by the statement, “Find mental health resources at Loveyourmindtoday.org.” The text makes it clear that the ad’s central message is about mental health, encouraging viewers to seek out support. At the bottom of the screen, the logo for the Huntsman Mental Health Institute is displayed, reinforcing the focus on mental well-being.

This final moment shifts the tone from the family’s narrative to the overarching message of the ad, tying the importance of family and legacy to the broader theme of mental health. The farm, a symbol of hard work, continuity, and connection to the land, is used as a metaphor for mental resilience, encouraging viewers to take care of themselves and their mental health just as they would care for the land and their loved ones.

Visual Rhetoric – LoverofCatsandMatcha

0:01

In the first second, we see a young woman lounging on a sofa, on a laptop. She is wearing what appears to be modern era clothing: a sweatshirt and sweatpants. The camera angle is wide, and provides the perspective as though we were looking at her from the opposite side of the room. From the perspective of the camera, we are able to see the majority of the living room that she is sitting in, as well as the entrance to the adjacent room, which appears to be a dining room. The living room is neat and tidy, but also looks as though it has been occupied by a family. It is nicely decorated, and the photos in the background give the implication that the girl we see at the forefront of the clip lives with her family.

0:02

In the next two seconds, the camera angle flips to what is assumed to be the opposite side of the living room, from the young woman on the sofa’s perspective. Four teenagers rush into the frame/room, with slightly frazzled expressions on their faces. The first to enter is a short cheerleader, indicated by her cheerleading uniform, and she is closely followed by two boys and one girl. The four of them are dressed and accessorized in a way reminiscent of the 80s, from the brightly colored outfits, to the eccentric hair and accessories, to the outdated cheer uniform. They face the camera, but their line of vision goes past it, implying that they are looking at and engaging with the young woman that was seated on the sofa. On the screen, the words “A Very Special Episode” appear, reminiscent of a sitcom.

0:03

The camera pans back to the girl on the sofa, who looks slightly surprised by the sudden appearance of the people in the living room. Her reaction gives the impression that she does not recognize these people, nor was she expecting to see them.

0:04

One of the teenagers, the tallest of the group, dramatically takes off his sunglasses and says something to the young woman on the sofa, a negative expression on his face.

0:05

The camera returns to the young woman on the sofa, and she frowns. Whatever the tall young man said to her has clearly upset her, as she furrows her brow and continues to look at the group in her living room.

0:06

The camera pans back to the teenagers, with the cheerleader saying something next, her physical demeanor pleading. She speaks to the girl on the couch with a frown.

0:07

The camera pans out to the entire living room, so that both the girl on the sofa and the four teenagers are visible. The shorter teenage boy does a thumbs down to the girl on the sofa, clearly in a mode of discouraging her from whatever they had just told her about.

0:08-0:17

The four teenagers speak back and forth with the girl on the sofa, as though they are lecturing her. Each of the four has a turn to seemingly reprimand her, as depicted by their body language. It is evident that they are giving her advice about something, but it is unclear what. They stand out against her modern living space, and yet, they don’t seem phased. It is almost as though they are not actually there, and they are moreso a hallucination or imaginary idea. Their intervention quickly ends.

0:18-0:19

The scene pauses, and implies that the skit is over. On the screen in large white text, it says “Wacky sitcom teens aren’t the best people to talk to your kid about vaping.”

0:20-0:22

The scene restarts, but the camera is directly on the young woman on the couch’s face this time. However, instead of the four teenagers rushing into the living room, an older gentleman does, who is implied to be the father of the girl on the sofa, as he goes to approach her. As he enters the frame, the words “You are” are displayed.

0:23-END

The clip ends with the man sitting next to the girl on the couch, and it looks to be the start of a conversation. On the screen, the website that is promoting this advertisement is displayed on the screen.

Overall:

This ad was confusing without audio, to say the least. While the choice to use silly characters to highlight the main message was interesting, I do not think that it conveys the same strength in message when it is silenced. I am sure that with audio the point is stronger, but silent, it just seems like the girl on the sofa is hallucinating these people. On a rewatch, I briefly considered that she may be hallucinating; a dramatized side effect of vaping. Their presence seems random to me. If the ad company sought to create this message using fictional characters, I think they would have been better suited to use commonly known characters, so that a common viewer would be more inclined to pay attention to the details, and the audio would not be as important.

This is not to say that the ad is completely horrible, however. In fact, I do think that it has its unique strengths. The use of on screen words helps to aid the overall message, and I think that the contrast between reality and fiction was interesting and conveyed the message well. It could have been better, but overall, I do believe that they were successful in conveying their message. When I watched it with audio, after completing the first portion of the assignment, I did find myself easily able to follow along, and I believe that this was largely in part to the on screen prompts.

We start off with a living room, well decorated with various degrees of beige and variation of white and gray. The entrance to the living room has a large wooden arch grasping the attention. It is glossed over and reflecting the light coming from a pair of windows on a wall on the side of the view. The arch leads into seemingly a hallway, and another archway leading to a dining room parallel to the perspective. There is a girl, seemingly older teenager to young adult. She has her hair pulled back into a ponytail, wearing round glasses and wearing a sweater with jeans. She also looks of East Asian descent. She is seemingly typing on a laptop in front of her, maybe doing classwork considering she may be doing homework. There is nothing special about what is happening, seemingly mundane. Just the decor itself screams well off, everything is in place, nothing is out of place. It feels too sterile to be a commercial, though it is just the very beginning. It sets a stage that could grow into anything, a standard upper-middle class household with a blank, representative character.

The perspective switches back behind the girl, on her right shoulder. Four strange people enter the room, wearing various degrees of clothing. The way they’re dressed it seems like they’re from a wide array of backgrounds. Blonde hair, blue eye, white skin cheerleader still in uniform? She also happens to still be carrying her cheer supplies. The next seems like a caricature as he is wearing very “Millennial” dress, jeans, gold chain, an off pink shirt and a purple/pink jacket. He also happens to be wearing orange plastic shades that are practically unusable. He looks of African American descent and seems like a stand in for something. The third is of East Asian descent like the original girl, but she is dressed way more whimsically. She has a spray of various colors, with purple polka dots on a red skirt, one set of red and yellow bracelets on her left arm, and blue and white bracelets on the right. She is wearing a short-sleeved polo shirt, yet it has a checkered pattern of whites and various shades of cyan. Large circular orange earrings are hanging from her ear, looking a little too thick to comfortably wear. She also has vast amounts of makeup, especially cyan and orange eye shadow caking the top of her eyes. Her hair is curly and pulled up via a cyan scrunchy. The last one in view is a boy, seemingly much scrawnier in comparison with the other 3 that are on screen. He is wearing bright yellow shorts, with seemingly a cyan shirt on that is hidden beneath a patterned shirt similar to that of a Hawaiian shirt. Though his shirt consists of various blues, yellows, and reds in seemingly unconjurable patterns. He has shorter brown curly hair, with a smaller straw hat similar to a fedora. Large words don the screen of “A Very Special Episode”, like it is a sitcom. Pure confusion, these completely random group of four springing into action to enter center frame. They are dressed way to elaborate for normal friends, let alone leaving the house like that. This is not a commercial, unless it is advertising the eccentric clothing, it could only mean something else, with the “Special Episode” meaning this may just be a crossover episode.

The camera swaps back to the original girl, this time she is looking up at the four in a confusing manner, almost as if she is wondering why they are all in front of her. Her typing also stops in this manner. She doesn’t know them. Her eyes widen in confusion, why would these people show up in her house, while she is doing something, and just declare something to her? Maybe still a crossover episode, though seemingly unlikely. Wouldn’t you expect somebody to know if they were collaborating with someone, especially with four people?

The camera then swaps back to the four. This time the man with the orange sunglasses is very center stage. Both of the girls that are in perspective are looking up at him while he speaks, as the boy with the straw hat it just dead staring at the original girl. He takes off his sunglasses and it seems as if those in frame nod along with the brief thing he says. It is a declaration. Confidence oozes from his posture, he stands as if he himself owns the world. The other three stand and nod like they’re minions to a super villain in a comic reel. They’re too… artificial. Too clean, too slick, as if physically pulled from a television. These people… they just aren’t based in reality.

0:05-0:06

The camera swaps back again to the original girl, this time she still has the confused face yet says something, seemingly as if she is just saying a “What” in pure confusion on how these four entered her abode. We aren’t close enough to accurately read her eyes, but it’s as if she might know who they are. Maybe they’re friends from afar, maybe so far even that them showing up unannounced has completely stumped her.

0:07-0:08

The perspective shifts back to the four, and now the Asian girl with the large amount of make-up takes the stage. She says an array of words, yet the way she looks and uses hand motion implies a sense of sass, similar to that of someone who may be taking a “Popular” caricature. She seems to be lecturing the original girl of something. It’s a spitting rebuke, the way she is assumes a stance that just screams offensive, like she’s completely against what the original girl is doing.

0:09

The camera then swaps over to the blonde girl, zooming in onto mainly her face. The orange sunglasses man also is in frame, yet he stands there without movement. The blonde girl says something, yet she her face is speaking like she is distraught about something, though seemingly very exacerbated in that sense. Her eyes bulge out of her skull, as if there are magnets pulling them forward into a permanently shocked expression. The pom-poms on her hand swing about like beheaded chickens. There is no rhyme or reason for her to even have those on in a standard, modern day upper-middle class home. She just, exists, like a photo from an album pulled with the same expression frozen in fear.

0:10-0:11

The camera pans back to the first scene, with the archway now being blocked off by the four people. They are all assuming a stance of distraught, though it seems way too unnatural. It looks as if they were told to get into a pose where they’re looking directly at the original girl, yet it seems way too hammed up like they aren’t really ‘real’. It’s like they’re actual stereotypes or from a different world in the way they speak, emote, and even just in the way they’re standing feels as though they’re just complete imagination. They all seem as if they’ve been plucked from a high school movie and plopped into this house to confront the girl. Nobody in any normal sense would be wearing what all four are wearing, either be it contrasting colors, a cheer outfit, party sunglasses in a non-party sense, and a hat that just doesn’t fit. The sense that these people aren’t at all real, that they might just be figments of the girl’s imagination. Especially because of how confused she has looked when staring at the group of four. It’s similar to how someone would recognize something but are confused on why that thing is directly in front of them, like how an apparition appears in the corner of the eye. Every emotion on the faces of the four are plastered on, glued and morphed into something completely uncanny.

0:12-0:17

The scene pans back to behind the girls right shoulder. It’s facing the living room again yet this time it is the blonde girl speaking. The words she says are still unknown, and the way she speaks and acts herself is like that of an AI, or even just like a really emotional person. The other three all look at her and nod their head in agreement, but everything still feels off. It’s as if they’re demanding something of the original girl, just by the way I feel they’re all speaking. It’s uncomfortable, like an intervention into something but it just doesn’t feel like the appropriate dress or characters to do that. Bombastic people acting like snobs or caricatures doesn’t fit an environment where you’re supposed to tell someone straight up that something is wrong. This continues for the next 5 seconds, which is uncomfortably long. The characters are similar to a body double, acting and speaking as if they would normally, yet unnaturally moving and speaking. It is as if there are strings attached to each person, moving them as they should and speaking, yet artificial enough to see that there is something greater behind the scenes.

0:18

The camera then pans back to the original girl, still very much confused. She’s sitting dumbfounded, and it’s clear she has absolutely zero idea what has occurred or what is occurring. Her eyes dart from the right to the left, and it’s clear she is lost in thought. Visible processing of information, either due to the lack there of understanding or the complete shutdown of any cognitive function from the sudden appearance of four, completely inhuman humans.

0:19-0:23

It pans back to the group of four, yet now words pop up on screen. “Wacky sitcom teens aren’t the best people to talk to your kid about vaping.” They are all in a stance and frozen in the background of these words. Though it feels very much out of the blue, considering these confirmed caricatures are all just, there. It doesn’t feel like anything has hinted at vaping, but it just drops it onto you. I don’t understand. There was nothing signaling about vaping from the start, besides any confrontational attitude, but the ‘Wacky Sitcom Teens’ are already stereotypes, and having them be confrontational is seemingly normal especially to fit that stereotype. It feels just super terrible to try and relate these people who don’t seem real at all to those who are. Especially when presented with so little information besides these colorful people encountering a seemingly normal girl. Why were they so unnatural, pictures pulled into motion. Why would they be frozen in the same emotions, stuck like a statue in a pose. What was even the point of all of this? To signal that vaping is bad?

0:24

The camera pans to the original girl, and the eyes of confusion transfer into that of relief. Her darting eyes focus for one of the first times, as she notices something in front of her that seems to be familiar, rather than the previous group of people that were just there. Considering that we now know the point of the advertisement, the four are gone. Hopefully replaced with either a recognizable wall or something familiar that calms her nerves. No loud bombastic group of four to ridicule her for vaping.

0:25-0:26

Replacing the group of sitcom teens is a man. He has brown hair, glasses, a sweater that is worn over a collared shirt, along with jeans. He has a smile on his face, and is looking at the original girl. It seems to be a father, or maybe just a guardian. But the sight of him brings visible relief to the girl. The four teens from earlier have vanished. Most likely her father, even though he is visibly Caucasian, her mother shares her attributes. He will probably talk to her about vaping, rather than the specters that haunted her mere moments earlier.

0:27-0:30

The camera now pans back to the original view, and we see the full living room. This time, the girl has closed her laptop and the father has sat next to her, seemingly talking to her about an important topic. He’s sitting close yet slightly far, his hand draped over the back of her seat. The point of the advertisement shows on screen, ‘TalkAboutVaping.org”. The scene then ends with these words.

Nothing ever in this entire PSA says anything about vaping. Zero pictures, zero stances.

Reflection:

I found the ad without any sound, absolutely terrible. There is no indication on any sense of specific things happening, especially with the characters added. They fill no purpose in the grand scheme of getting the message across, besides making the original girl feel uncomfortable. I don’t get the whole wacky thing of using these teens as a bad way of attempting to talk about vaping, especially when in reality nothing is like this at all. It feels like a way of either relating to an older generation who may find these characters relatable, rather than anyone else who can see that they aren’t. I personally don’t understand why the director made the choice of spending 25 seconds in a 30 second ad with these characters that do nothing to get across a point. The shift in camera also doesn’t exactly help, why does it zoom in on one of the stereotypes for seemingly unknown reason, and also why do some of them just uncomfortably stand there?
