Purposeful summary- iloveme5

It is counterintuitive that a photograph taken by a reporter of a Haitian women’s lifeless body is more effective a symbol of the Haitian earthquake instead of the actual tragedy and damages the earthquake caused.

In 2010 an earthquake in Haiti caused an indescribable amount of damage and death. In efforts to raise awareness of the earthquake, reporters were sent to Haiti to capture the outcome of the tragedy. Instead of focusing on the damages of the earthquake a photo that a reporter captured was the lifeless body of Fabienne Charisma. Her photograph deterred the focus of the earthquake and attracted world wide attention. Fabienne Charisma was an innocent young girl who was killed not by the earthquake but by Haitian law enforcement. The bullets were aimed at looters in efforts to stop the stealing after the earthquake and she was struck while crossing a roof with paintings that she had taken from a shop. The controversy of the photograph continues to circulate because of its lack of remorse made by the reporters. The lifeless body of a the girl was used as a symbol of the Haitian earthquake and destructive aftermath. The reporters cared more about profiting on the photograph and suffering rather than out of respect not photographing the girl and repositioning her body for a better look. The photograph simply captures the lengths the media will go to and how even in a vulnerable state as death, it is still not respected by other humans.

My Hypothesis – Student12121

  1. Modern Running shoes
  2. Modern running shoes effect on injuries
  3. The impact of carbon plated running shoes on injuries
  4. Carbon plated running shoes cause injuries at a higher rate then their non-carbon plated counterparts
  5. Running in carbon plated shoes weakens some muscles leading to injuries that would not happen without the plate
  6. Consistently running in carbon plated shoes leads to weakness in foot and calf muscles leading to injuries that wouldn’t happen if the exact same shoe had no plate.

Purposeful summary—Who’sOnFirst?

It seems counterintuitive that a media debate should seem more important than saving lives. In January, 2010, Fabienne Cherisma, a 15 year old survivor of the Port-au-Prince earthquake in Haiti, was killed by a stray bullet. Media flocked to the repulsive scene, each camera vying to capture the best picture. Many were repulsed by the photographers boldness to capture a picture. The picture, which was meant to spread awareness to the terrible situation in Haiti, instead became the source of a terrible media frenzy as everyone became a judge in their own personal court of justice.

Purposeful Summary—lil.sapph

It seems counterintuitive that photographers on assignment in Haiti, put their focus on capturing Fabienne’s innocent lifeless body as the “face” of the earthquake’s aftermath rather than displaying the actual destruction caused by it.

Fabienne Cherisma’s death was not directly caused by the earthquake as it may seem, but instead by the negligence of local law enforcement. While chaos occurred around the country from disastrous earthquake on January 19th, 2010, police were left to control the situation and stop the looting occurring in the capital. Mistakenly, they shot 15-year old Fabienne in the head as she was crossing a rooftop with her paintings. This had attracted all of the journalistic sharks that smelled the blood from afar. They began to photograph her body lying on the concrete with her blood-soaked paintings under her. It became a problem when they went as far to re-arrange her body for a more impacting image which was a complete disgrace to her and her family.

Purposeful Summary – unicorn45678

It seems counterintuitive that when this earthquake occurred in January of 2010, over 230,000 Haitians had died from this tragic event. The aftermath of this incidence involved lawless looters to kill one another. As they stated in the summary that the photographers rushed over to Haiti to record the chaos, I don’t think it was very necessary for them to take part in that. Although it’s their job to document these types of situations, I feel like they could’ve waited like 2 or 3 days then they could’ve started their documentary, however in my opinion recording people going through tragic events isn’t appropriate, you couldn’t even image what these people are going through in that moment.

Purposeful Summaries-phoenixxxx23

It seems counterintuitive that humanity has decided that it is capable of taking lives indiscriminately, like an earthquake, with a shot from a piece of iron. While most of the people died from the nature disaster, a fifteen year old girl named Fabienne Cherisma was killed by police in Haiti after a massive earthquake. She was killed with a bullet to the head after taking paintings from a wrecked shop in downtown Port-au-Prince

But this tragedy would have gone unnoticed if photographers rushing to get the best shots for their job had not taken pictures from the scene. The girl’s name – Fabienne means “bean grower” in French, and it is paradoxical how a person, like a plant, emerges from a seed and grows through the earth, living a life until it withers. This is the natural process of renewal of nature, but when a person decides that he is capable of tearing out all the roots in one blink, all that remains is a heartbreaking photo of a little girl lying on the cold ground. And when one is able to feel this chill on the skin through the screen of a phone, then the dilemma about the moral qualities of photographers moves into the background. Only the eternal dilemma of life and death remains.

Purposeful Summary – pineapple488

It seems counterintuitive that an image taken in an effort to bring attention to the injustice of a tragic death instead brought attention to the injustice of the photographers themselves. Fabienne Cherisma, an innocent fifteen year old girl, was tragically killed by the stray bullet of a police officer meant to deter looters during the aftermath of the 2010 earthquake in Haiti. A crowd of journalists flocked to take photographs of the poor girl’s corpse, not one of them showing remorse for the situation, but rather profiting from and winning awards for the images. While one might expect that such an image representing the struggles faced by marginalized communities would elicit empathy and promote action, the graphic nature of the photos sparked discomfort and caused people to question the ethics of the photographers on the grounds of exploitation. Many believe that steps should have been taken to show respect before releasing the images, such as asking permission from the girl’s family and putting more emphasis on the humanity of the girl rather than simply using her as a symbol of suffering and capitalizing on her vulnerability. Rather than encouraging reform for the community of victims who suffered the aftermath of the tragedy, the images led to introspection and conversation of the nature of which sensitive stories are told through media.

As photographers came to take pictures of the after math of the incident. A picture began to circulate taken as a controversy.

The message of controversy relates to the modern day issue of police brutality around the world. No matter if in USA or Haiti the issue of police abusing their power is becoming more of issue. The restructuring of the police has to be consider across the world. Because no police officer should have taken life of an individual in times of crisis.

Purposeful Summary – Softball1321

It is counterintuitive that photojournalists had been sent to Haiti to document the lifeless body of Fabienne Cherisma that was caused from human actions, not the aftermath of the earthquake.

As shown in the abominable picture, teenager Fabienne Cherisma is seen laying lifeless while being surrounded by a group of photojournalists. It is clear that Fabienne Cherisma’s body was moved into many different positions, showing that the photographers were attempting to get the right angle of the young girls dead body. Though these photographers were only doing their job, this photograph caused an outrage on the accusations of media exploitation. Fabienne Cherisma’s death was unexpected, while many lay lifeless from the earthquake that struck Haiti, Fabienne remains lifeless from police brutality.

Among the wreckage, photographers arrived to document the destruction the earthquake caused.
