  1. It seems counterintuitive that multivitamins could do more harm than good. Vitamin companies make millions of the idea that they are making you healthier, however that is not always the case. There is no evidence that multivitamins prevent diseases or chronic illnesses. The labels on the vitamin bottles are also untruthful and are recommending vitamins in quantities that exceed the daily limit. The average person does not need to take a multivitamin because it will do nothing for them.
  2. It seems counterintuitive that dogs could become even more beloved. However due to new recent studies, that is not the case. Dogs have successfully been trained to sniff out cancer from breath and stool samples. The dogs are able to detect cancer is early and advanced stages. The dogs only wish after doing such hard work, is a quick throw of a tennis ball.
  3. It seems counterintuitive that girls being clean could lead to illness later on. A stereotype around the world is that girls stay inside where they can stay clean, while it is more accepted for the boys to play outside and get dirty. Since girls are not given the luxury to play outside in the dirt, they are developing disorders from their environment. Women are more likely to asthma, allergies, and autoimmune disorders. Not allowing a girl to play outside while she is young, will cause her to become sicklier growing up.

Definition – PeterGriffin

Everywhere you go now, whether it’s in a grocery store, mall, movie theaters, and or a restaurant it seems that kids are acting out in worse behaviors than kids used to act years ago. I have conversations with other people regarding “how are these kids acting this way and how are they getting away with it?” I am a firm believer that it isn’t any new technology on why these kids are acting out worse nowadays, it is a lack of parenting. Some people may believe that “extreme parenting” is bad for children but I believe it can actually be good for them.

Ever since I was a little boy I always had my father on my back about things that I didn’t do and or should have done differently. If I talked to my mother and or sister a certain way I would have been grounded from playing video games and or my cell phone. Taking a kid’s cell phone away is the worst punishment you can give them. Throughout grade school I always had to strive for honoral. If I didn’t make honoral, again there would be consequences when I got home to show my father my report card. With my father being hard on me in life, and showing me valuable life lessons, I am extremely grateful for that because it made me the man I am today.

The word discipline comes from the latin word “discere” which means to “teach”. This is why parents show discipline in order for their child to learn what they did wrong and they shouldn’t do it again. By having discipline it can teach people many things. Extreme parenting can be different to many people. For instance, some people may believe that extreme parenting or “tough love” can just mean enforcing rules and showing discipline to their kids if they do something wrong. Other people may believe that extreme parenting and or “tough love” can mean that parents put their hands on the child. I can see both arguments whether people agree with both examples of extreme parenting or not. Personally I mostly agree with it unless if it turns into abuse then I don’t agree with it.

According to the article that I am reading, “productive use of tough love might entail emphasizing realistic consequences for actions.” For instance by this quote it means, if an older brother puts his hands on his younger sister a father of the two siblings may release a harsh punishment on his son due to his actions and the father may also put his hands on his son (even though the father doesn’t want to do that). By the father providing these consequences to his son due to the sons actions it will not only show him discipline but will also make him realize his actions were wrong and in the real world he will be met with similar consequences like getting charged and possibly going to jail for assault and if people in jail know what he did they would probably put their hands on the person. That is why parents discipline their children with consequences that meet the action of what their child pursued.

Another great example that parents use in the “tough love” parenting style is teaching their children the true value of a dollar and the differences between “wants and needs”. Parents can teach their children the true definition of a dollar by having them work for their money at a young age. For example, parents that give their children a monthly and or by weekly allowance by doing chores is great. This allows children to learn that they must clean up after themselves and will earn money in the process. Now if a child wants to buy something they will have to think long and hard whether that purchase is a “want or need”. Yes it is okay if people purchase what they would like to have in life sometimes but they shouldn’t do this all the time especially when they get into the real world when they have bills to pay such as car insurance, rent, utility bills, and food to buy.

“Tough love” can be a great parenting style for children. It will make kids more mentally strong as well I believe. With how involved our youth are in social media nowadays, “tough love” from parents will make kids more mentally strong and will be able to cope with things better than they see on social media platforms like Snapchat, Instagram, and or Facebook. There are so many children in today’s world that suffer from depression because of what they see on social media because their life may not look like someone on social media that the person is posting.

In Conclusion I believe that the parenting style of “tough love” is great for children if it’s not used in an abusive way. I plan on using “tough love” one day if I am lucky to have kids of my own. From my research “tough love” teaches kids responsibility, discipline, high self esteem, and to manage their aggression. I believe that this parenting style will teach the next generation not to be “too soft” which will be good for our country.

Stone Money- Indigo

A Kid’s Game

I have worked at a daycare for a few years now. I have noticed that a popular game to play among the kids is restaurant or store. They make up fictional products or food to sell to their friends, and in return, their friends pay them with fake money. To them, the idea of money is simple- you want something, you buy it, and you’re done. As I researched the island of Yap and Brazil’s economy, the idea of money became less simple. The question of how real and fake money truly is, comes into play.

A basic idea kids follow is playing a game by the rules. If someone is cheating or simply not listening, all hell breaks loose. This basic idea is inherited by all humans within a society. This notion is seen in the island of Yap. In NPR’s podcast, “The Island of Stone Money”, Goldstein and Kestenbaum explain the currency of the island. They explain that instead of paying currency for a large payment, they use Fei. Fei is a larger-than-life stone wheel that holds tremendous value within the Yap community. Everyone on the island knows whose Fei is who’s, regardless of placement on the island. Much like children, everyone on the island plays the “game” by the rules. However, in Milton Friedman’s, “The Island of Stone Money”, he explains how the Germans did not play by the rules. Germany had gained ownership of the island and wanted the people of Yap to fix their roads. When the island of Yap did not concede, the Germans went to the island and put big black Xs on their Fei. The Yap were in shock, the black markings on their Fei had made the Fei lose all its value. Not until the Yaps fixed their roads, did the Germans removed the Xs from the Fei. Although the Yaps reaction might seem childish, this is how many people view the value of their own money.

What happens if the rules of a game are messed up? Usually, this means that things for the players goes arise. A similar thing happened in Brazil’s to its economy. In the Planet Money podcast episode, “The Invention of Money”, it is explained that Brazil had made bad investments and was producing too much money. The value of money itself was changing every day and the people couldn’t keep up. The Planet Money podcast used firsthand accounts from Brazilians to explain what life was like during this time. The Brazilians recount stories of grocery prices going up by the day and how paychecks lost value every minute they were not cashed. The government tried to reconcile the economy by implementing a price freeze. However, the country’s store owners took it upon their selves to hoard the goods and wait out the freeze. There was not enough food for the public to buy and feed their family with. With the country’s economy being a mess and public outrage, the country’s government finally had to ask for help.

What happens if someone does not understand the rules of a game? Usually, a friend will explain and try to help out. Similarly, Brazil finally decided it was time to ask for help with the economy. In the article, “How an economist’s fake money saved his country from high and uncontrolled inflation by the International Investor”, explains how four college students answered Brazil’s call. Although hesitant at first, the college students decided to implement their own plan to help the Brazilian economy. The friends convinced the country to use fake money to pay for goods and services. They also instructed the country to stop producing so much unnecessary money. Under the student’s advisement, the government went ahead with the new plan. The public even got their paychecks converted into this new money. The public was able to know the value of their new money by checking the newspaper. The newspaper would change the value of the money every day to combat inflation. The public started to use the new system and the economy started to stabilize. Once the economy was stable, the fake money was no longer needed and could be forgotten. The original money system in the country had been restored. Making the Brazilians believe that the fake money had value, is what saved Brazil’s economy.

Brazil’s economy has been stable for years. So much so that many people buy goods in installments. At many stores Brazilians can buy a simple shirt and pay for it in six payments. However, the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic shook many countries, including Brazil. In the article, “Counterfeit Money Trade Thieves in Brazil Amid Pandemic by Insight Crime”, Norris explains the illegal acts involving the Brazilian economy during the pandemic. The police had discovered that multiple groups were selling fake bank notes. The groups were deceiving the public with promises of making them rich since many of them had lost their jobs. The police discovered that big rings were counterfeiting millions of dollars from the Brazilian economy. It was reported that the act counterfeiting money is on the rise within the country. It is a shame to see that people are trying to destroy a country’s economy that took so long to fix.

In the end, a kid’s version of money is not so different from ours. The Yap community holds value in big stone wheels and the Brazilians put all their faith into a new currency that was just fake money disguised. Money isn’t real. Money is just an idea. Money is fake. We as a society could put value to anything and decide to use that as the nation’s currency. The government dictates what money is and we just blindly follow the rules. We are all just kids following the rules of a game.

Low Self-Esteem

In an ideal world, self-esteem is a measurement of one’s individual achievements and accomplishments. A measure of self-worth, while necessary for psychological survival, can be damaging if it fails to meet fundamental requirements. This idea refers to the positive or negative feelings individuals perceive about themselves (Jhangiani & Tarry, 2022). As soon as a person becomes aware of themselves, and their surroundings, self-esteem begins to develop. Self-esteem can be determined by how well people think of their own performance and appearance, as well as how happy they are with social interactions. Mood swings, trouble communicating with people, and interpersonal conflict are just a few of the many repercussions of low self-esteem. Self-esteem is an emotion-changing state that can occur quickly. For instance, a person’s low performance on an exam for which they had studied for can lead to conflicting, contradictory results. A poor score tells the student that they didn’t do well, which develops self-doubt and unfavorable feelings. One’s self-evaluations are significantly influenced by personal circumstances in life (McKay & Fanning, 2016). It is more likely that people may self-verify the negative aspects of their own self-concept in situations where they are insecure about their flaws. It seems counterintuitive that people with negative self-views prefer negative evaluations, while discrediting positive ones. The inability to enhance positivity in one’s lifetime while trying to maintain cognitive balance depresses one’s actual self-perception.

The sociometer theory focuses on how social interactions affect overall self-esteem. Self-esteem is a gauge of acceptance among others, according to the sociometer theory. People who struggle with low self-esteem perceive themselves as less appealing and loving than those who are confident, and they also believe that they are less deserving of favorable outcomes. The Sociometer theory sheds light on the contextual elements that influence sentiments of worthiness as well as the reasons why different dispositions are associated with different levels of such feelings (Wood et al., 2009). According to current research, remembering a past rejection lowers mood, weakens one’s feeling of self-worth, challenges one’s sense of personal deservingness, and makes individuals who have low self-esteem lose motivation to bring themselves out of a depressed mood.

People who have low self-esteem will discover that self-verification and self-enhancement work against each other. In accordance with the self-verification theory, these feelings of rejection exist. The self-verification theory demonstrates people look for evidence to support either their positive or negative self-concepts. Even when others have unfavorable opinions of them, people are nonetheless inclined to keep these opinions consistent (Self-Verification Theory, 2022).

People can experience such high achievements and accomplishments within their lifetime, however, can still be riddled with self-doubt. Individuals are advised to develop self-confidence and self-esteem early on due to living in an environment that is obsessed with achievement. The issue with teaching one’s self-worth to reflect one’s accomplishments is that it causes that person to feel continually unfulfilled and to be on the lookout for wholeness (Berman, 2015). These experiences of anxiety and negative self-evaluations are due to cognitive distortions. Cognitive distortions refer to the way a person’s mind can trick itself into thinking negatively, regarding themself and the outside world (15 Cognitive Distortions to Blame for Your Negative Thinking, 2016). These internal mental biases or filters make people feel worse about themselves and contribute to higher rates of anxiety (MD, 2022). Cognitive distortions occur occasionally in everyone. Regardless of any contradictory knowledge, one’s emotions and sentiments about a situation become the true view of the scenario. According to Prescott Lecky’s theory, people are driven to uphold chronic self-beliefs because it gives a great sense of coherence (Van Lange et al., 2011). Many other cognitive filters, like catastrophizing and eliminating the positive, are frequently used in emotional thinking. It is an aspect of the human experience. People specifically experience this when they are depressed or easily frustrated (15 Cognitive Distortions to Blame for Your Negative Thinking, 2016).

People with low self-esteem tend to credit negative thoughts, while rejecting positive ones. In the book “Fearless Heart”, author Thupten Jinpa states “we’re afraid that if we were to be too gentle and kind with ourselves, to relax our grip, we might not accomplish anything at all. So we keep cracking our internal whip” (Berman, 2015). It is believed that negative emotions can affect motivation and cognition, which can lead to disruptions in positive self-regulation. It would seem reasonable that if unpleasant emotions affect one’s ability to control their self, it may also affect how well those negative feelings are handled (Heimpel et al., 2002). Individuals may reject the complement if they believe the source of self-relevant feedback to be dishonest or inaccurate. Another example that supports this claim is people cling to “nonexistent” negative data if their past experiences prevent them from receiving accurate assessments of their own performance (Van Lange et al., 2011).  The majority of self-verification studies show that people who have poor opinions of themselves favor critical assessments. People with low self-esteem may not pay much attention to their own feedback in general since they are more concerned with how others perceive them (Josephs et al., 2003).

People who have a low self-esteem frequently have stronger negative emotional responses to unfortunate occurrences. The judgmental, self-critical inner voice that seems natural and comfortable in your brain is where negative self-evaluations originate. Those with confidence and security issues may find it more difficult to rein in their inner critic. The internal critic appears to have a will of its own and a sense of independence, but this is all an illusion. The critic, is a psychological jackal who, with each attack, erodes and destroys any positive thoughts people may have about themselves (McKay & Fanning, 2016). People’s feelings and behaviors are greatly influenced by their thinking. Since success and failure feelings are not directly related to inclusionary status, people with poor self-esteem may be less aware of their own experiences of success or failure (Josephs et al., 2003). People often perceive themselves differently and behave in ways based on incorrect assumptions when they treat these negative beliefs as truths(15 Cognitive Distortions to Blame for Your Negative Thinking, 2016).
