Thank you for your draft Hypothesis. In conversation, we have narrowed your focus, at least temporarily, to the deliberate “greenwashing” that companies use to convince the public that their small environmentally conscious initiative shields them from criticism for their overly destructive business activities.
Updated. 🙂
Put this back into Feedback Please along with a Reply about what I should do next, please, BlogUser.
I have added my post back into the feedback please category. At this point I am just looking to see if my hypothesis is still too broad and if there are any other details I should rewire at the moment. Looking forward to your feedback 🙂
It’s good, BlogUser—better than the average Counterintuitive Hypothesis—AND, your #6 amounts to a Definition of Greenwashing.
All of that “hiding their participation in destructive company activities that contribute to the planet’s pollution” is the basis for the need to Greenwash.
So far you haven’t identified the BY.
What I mean is, you haven’t completed this sentence: “[Environmentally-destructive] companies use deliberate greenwashing to [hide from the public] their contributions to the planet’s pollution BY . . . .” By doing what?
You’ve hinted so far, in 1-4, and in 5, that they do something deliberate to shield themselves from criticism. Now work that claim into your Hypothesis.
And THEN we can work on narrowing down your overall claim.
I apologize it took me so long to respond to this feedback. I have added my “by” to the hypothesis and added to feedback please.
That’s good work, BlogUser. We agree that it’s by promoting the heck out of their small accomplishments that greenwashing companies try to divert attention from their more pervasively destructive activities.
Now for your SYNTAX.
(Check out that word. It’s not the same as GRAMMAR.)
Your sentence is grammatically correct:
But the phrasing (particularly the location of the “by” phrase) misleads readers into thinking that companies:
1. Add to the planet’s pollution by
2. Promoting their misleading environmental sustainability efforts.
That’s not your intended meaning.
What you mean, after relocating your final phrase, is:
Do I have that right?
Appreciate the difference?
By the way, nobody really gets a grade for this assignment, but I can grade yours if you like to reflect the amount of time we’ve spent perfecting it.
I see the difference in the two hypotheses now to say what I actually intended. Also, yes, I would like a grade for this assignment, I appreciate the feedback thank you.
