Visual Rewrite- Sunflower828

In the first second of the video, there is a black background, which keeps the viewer waiting to see what will appear on the screen. A pure white background appears on the screen following the first second of the video. There is a white wall which meets the white floor of what appears to be either a warehouse or a TV film set.

In the next second of the video, a medium sized, tan dog with dark brown floppy ears, and a white strip of hair down the front of it’s chest comes running into the frame grinning with it’s tail happily wagging. The following second shows the dog smiling, exposing it’s jagged teeth and bright brown eyes, melting the heart of the individual looking at it. Although the dog is not in a typical environment, such as a park or one’s home, it is very cheerful to be in its surroundings. Still wagging it’s tale, the medium sized brown dog with a black collar, holding a swinging silver metal name tag, runs up to what appears to be glass, pressing it’s nose up against it, then running out of frame.

Within the few seconds which follow, the dog, which appears to be a female, reappears from the left side of the frame and heads toward the middle of the unnatural and modern white backdrop, centering itself in front of the camera, still with her tale wagging. The dog stands there for several seconds, smiling with her same jagged teeth and tale wagging in the center of the frame. In the following seconds, the dog, still wagging her tail, darts off and exits the frame on the right side of the screen, then returns a second later, once again smiling.

She holds the smiling pose, exposing her sharp, but well kept, teeth for several seconds in the center of the frame, prior to sitting and holding the same, comfortable, smiling pose. When sitting and smiling, the medium sized brown dog puts her paw up, and taps on the glass, exposing her well kept nails. A second later, she taps the glass again, then looks to the left and exits the screen on the left side, running away in a happy and playful manner.

After the screen displays the white background for a second, she comes jogging in from the back left corner, pausing in the middle of the backdrop. The brown, friendly, dog then shows the viewers a trick and leaps into the air, high enough to clear a four foot fence. Once landing her jump, she exits the frame to the right in the twenty second second, then reappears from bottom of the frame, centering her face in front of the camera, smiling at the viewer once again. The hyper dog races out of the frame again for the final time, with the heart of the viewer in the grasp of her paws, exiting to the left with her tail wagging, happy as can be.

    This looks like a video I’ve never seen before, Sunflower, so before I do any other feedback or even read your post, I’m going to give you my impressions of the first second or two so you can see what I would consider an adequate report about the Visuals and an analysis of the Rhetoric.

    00:00-00:01
    The screen is actually pure black for the first full second, which I assume is just “leader,” not intended to be part of the “ad” or “spot.” We don’t know what we’ll be presented with while watching TV, so what comes next could be a commercial, a promo for an upcoming show, a public service announcement, or a “return to programming.”

    Suddenly the screen goes completely white, or to be more accurate, a sort of very pale blue-grey blend so pale it appears white after the pure black screen. Now that I see this transition, I will change my impression of the first second. I now think the creators of whatever will come next deliberately started with a full second of black to make sure this “spot” is separated from whatever precedes it by a clean break.

    From the edge of this “white” screen we see a dog begin to enter the frame, moving toward the center of the screen. For convenience sake, I’m going to assign him male gender. He’s moving fast, not running, but walking quickly, with a happy bounce in his step. If he has a facial expression, it’s one of joy. The dog appears healthy, is of medium size, and is of no clearly identifiable breed. A hound mix, maybe, short-haired, mostly tan-colored, with flopped-over, darker, pointed ears, and a darker muzzle.

    An odd characteristic of the film so far is that it’s blurry and a little sloppy. “Shadow images” of the dog appear both before him and behind him, which exaggerates the sense of motion, but keeps us from focusing carefully on his features. The environment is completely un-natural. This is not a dog out for a walk in the park or in someone’s home. He’s walking against a completely neutral background. He’s “nowhere.”

    Because we start to make judgments immediately when we’re looking at video, I’m guessing this is not a dog food commercial, maybe not even an ad for a product at all. It could be the start of a TV show, but it would be a strange one.

    Around the 2-second mark, the dog is entirely in the frame and we get more information. First, the long and animated tail is wagging happily all the way from the edge of the screen to the center. Also, since we do not see the only anatomical feature that would clearly identify our new friend as a male dog, I’m going to start calling her “her.” If dogs can smile, this dog appears to be smiling. Her mouth is open as she makes her entrance, and when she stops at the center of the frame, she has turned completely in our direction so we can see her alert, happy, friendly face.

    At first we could see only that she was wearing a collar, but, as she turns, a round silver metal tag swings from the collar. These details confirm that we’re looking at a dog that people have placed into this artificial neutral environment—perhaps her “owners,” but certainly people who want to control her, identify her, put her on a leash when called for. In other words, this is not a stray alone in the world.

    By 00:03, she has “hit her spot” in front of the camera. She has taken a seat, is facing directly at “us” and appears happy to see whoever is operating the camera. We take that to mean that she is comfortable with at least one person.

    OK. That’s it for me. I’m not going to watch the rest of the video until you make whatever adjustments you wish and put this back into Feedback Please.

    So, the Rhetorical Question: why?
    How come the dog comes and goes, comes and goes, keeps, I don’t know, checking in? Does this behavior parallel anything that goes on in the life of a dog seeking adoption?

    Who are “we”?
    What’s our attitude toward the dog?
    Why is she represented to us in this appealing but highly arbitrary fashion?
    Is there any chance we are shown her against a totally neutral background so that we can imagine including her in our own home, neighborhood, family?

    If you don’t answer the WHY questions, Sunflower, you’re doing only half the assignment.
