Self Reflective Statement

Core Value 1. My work demonstrates that I used a variety of social and interactive practices that involve recursive stages of exploration, discovery, conceptualization, and development.

I met this goal this semester by making thorough and substantial revisions to work I have submitted. I have been in constant communication with Professor Hodges over the course of this semester about how to better my work. This in itself is a social and interactive practice. I have explored and discovered many outside sources that have aided in developing my writing into the best that it can be and I have also bettered my skills in conceptualizing scholarly and dense texts that I have used as sources in my research analyses. Overall, looking at my work from the beginning of the semester until now, it shows clear and concise growth and development in all aspects. Writing is recursive and I believe that I have come close to mastering the practice of making constant revisions in order to make my work the best that it can be.

Core Value 2. My work demonstrates that I read critically, and that I placed texts into conversation with one another to create meaning by synthesizing ideas from various discourse communities. 

I met this goal this semester by constantly using sources to provide my writing with better insight. I have read many articles and books with critical thinking and I have pulled ideas and facts from these texts and used them in my writing in the appropriate circumstances. In most examples of my writing I have compiled this semester, I have used a broad range of sources from many different communities. I have used these sources and synthesized specific ideas from them into my writing to better communicate my theses and claims I have made in various pieces I have written. Overall I believe that I have placed critical reading and writing of utmost importance this semester and I will continue to do so in every piece I write during my academic career.

Core Value 3. My work demonstrates that I rhetorically analyzed the purpose, audience, and contexts of my own writing and other texts and visual arguments.

I met this goal this semester by making it my goal to constantly consider my audience when I am writing and to always provide them with appropriate context. I also used rhetoric to analyze the purpose of my writings and to analyze visual arguments this semester as well. Before I began to write any piece, I always would analyze why I am tasked with writing this specific piece, who exactly is it that I am conveying this piece to, and what context will best provide my audience with the most compelling and concise information. I was  also provided with many examples of visual argument that proved most useful in bettering my skills as a writer and providing me with a fresh perspective of what it means to be a good writer.

Core Value 4: My work demonstrates that I have met the expectations of academic writing by locating, evaluating, and incorporating illustrations and evidence to support my own ideas and interpretations.

I met this goal this semester by always using specific evidence from an array of sources, both scholarly and other articles, to support any and all claims I have made in my writing thus far. The evidence I have used to support claims made in my writing have been both for and against claims I have made. I believe it is important to use all of the facts surrounding a claim whether they support your interpretation of said claim or not. Using contrasting evidence and sources has helped me better understand a wide variety of perspectives, especially when writing an argumentative essay. Overall, it is extremely important and necessary to use evidence to support ideas in writing to avoid any type of misinterpretation of the work provided.

Core Value 5. My work demonstrates that I respect my ethical responsibility to represent complex ideas fairly and to the sources of my information with appropriate citation. 

I met this goal this semester by continuing to cite every source I have pulled facts and information from in my writing. I believe that properly citing sources is of extreme necessity and importance to avoid plagiarism and academic dishonesty. Using a variety of sources in my writing has helped me to express complex ideas and claims I have made with facts to uphold them. The sources I have used in my writing have also provided my ideas and claims with fair representation and portrayal. I also have learned how to cite sources properly in the APA format and I have learned how to properly cite sources inside the text I am writing as well.
