Elevator Instructions—Unicorn

  1. Continue to the sixth floor, to where there is a down summons.
  2. At the sixth floor, the doors open
  3. After five seconds of inactivity or in response to any floor button or the Close Doors button, the doors will close.
  4. Proceed to the specified floor, making only one stop along the way at the lowest requested floor for down summonses.
  5. As the elevator goes down it will only stop if there on a floor below six and wants to go even lower
  6. And finally, the elevator stops at the 1st floor, doors opens and everyone that wanted to come to the 1st floor gets off

You’ve misunderstood this admittedly confusing assignment, Unicorn.

What you’ve written here is a description of YOUR situation using the elevator. That’s not what the job requires. What you’re tasked with doing is writing a set of instructions that the elevator will follow.

A partial list that matches your example would be something like.

    1. Proceed to the sixth floor where a Down Summons is active.
    2. Open the doors at the sixth floor.
    3. Close the doors after 5 seconds of inactivity or in response to any Floor Button or the Close Doors button.
    4. Proceed to the floor requested, stopping for Down Summonses only along the way to the lowest requested floor.

Your 4 and 5 don’t work as you’ve described them. The elevator will stop for others who call for it ONLY IF they’re on a floor below 6 and want to go even lower. It will ignore Up Summonses.

I will delay grading these assignments for awhile to give everyone a chance to revise their first drafts. DON’T POST A NEW VERSION. Just open this post in Edit and make improvements.

    Optional, of course.

I don’t know why this post is in Feedback Please, Unicorn. It appears to suffer from the same problems I identified weeks ago. Your Revision history makes it hard to judge if you made any improvements at all following Feedback. I’ll remove it from the category now. I you want help with this, reach out, please.
