Elevator Post—Student 1512

-A passenger may use the Summons button outside of the elevator in order to call it to the first floor.

-If there are currently passengers within the elevator, drop off said passengers at the corresponding levels in the order of which the passengers got on the elevator. Then, lastly, arrive at the first floor at which the elevator has been summoned.

-If there are no passengers currently on the elevator when summoned to the first floor, go directly to the first floor.

-When at the first floor, stop the elevator, open the doors for the passenger, and wait fifteen seconds for inactivity before closing the doors.

-If no activity is detected, close the doors.

-Do not move up or down to any floors until the passenger selects a floor level.

-If the passenger presses the “Floor 3” Summons button, wait three seconds before beginning to move up to Floor 3.

-Should the elevator be requested to go to Floor 7 while the current passenger is on their way to Floor 3, go to Floor 3 first, let out the passenger, and then go to Floor 7.

-When reaching Floor 3, stop the elevator and wait three seconds before opening the doors. At which point the current passenger will exit the elevator.

-Continue to wait for fifteen seconds of inactivity before closing the doors and going up to the passenger that hit the Summons button on Floor 7.

Repeat the same process used to bring the first passenger to their requested level.

-When completed with the final passenger and not summoned to any other floor, return to the “Home” level. This would be the First floor

-Wait at the home level, with the doors closed, until summoned by other passengers.

By now, perhaps, Student1512, you’ve seen in class or had a chance to review the Elevator Instructions produced by your classmate, Crabs.

If so, you’ve noticed that there’s no need to mention any floor by name. You may also have been advised that elevators don’t WAIT ever. They go where they’re told and do what they’re told to do. They don’t anticipate there will ever again be anything to do. They can be instructed to return to the home floor, if you’ve established one, and to open their doors. And to close their doors after 15 seconds of inactivity, if you like. But they won’t be waiting during those 15 seconds.

I say all this to emphasize just what a unique reader your elevator is. The best Instructions respond to its personality/lack of personality.

-If there are currently passengers within the elevator, drop off said passengers at the corresponding levels in the order of which the passengers got on the elevator.

This is not accurate. The elevator has no idea in which order the passengers got on the elevator. Unless you’ve outfitted your elevator to sense the weight of its load, the elevator doesn’t know it IS carrying passengers, or care. It stops and opens its doors when it reaches a floor to which is has been instructed to proceed to, either in response to a Floor Request from a passenger or in response to a Summons Request from someone in the hallway outside the elevator.

Further, it won’t stop for Summons Requests that would cause it to change directions unless it has no other instructions.

    Helpful, or just hopelessly confusing?
