Ad- A Love We Can All Fight For

0:00

The first frame of the ad introduces WWE star Bianca Belair. She immediately goes into the monologue of the ad.

0:01- 0:04

She starts to talk about moving forward. She states “in order to move forward it helps to look back”. As she makes that statement a picture of the Washington Monument with thousands of people gathered together. Many of the people seem to be wearing the same white hat with black writing on it. They’re all there for a movement.

0:05- 0:08

The camera then switches to WWE star Becky Lynch. She makes a statement ” to learn from the pioneers and trail blazers”. As she makes that statement another black and white picture comes to the screen. The picture contains women holding up their fists and some women on a balcony holding a sign that says ” Women of the World Unite”. It seems to be a gathering for the women’s movement. The video then switches to another black and white picture which looks like people gathered and walking. They’re holding signs up that speak about social justice, religion, and race.

0:09- 0:11

The ad then introduces WWE star Damien Priest. He also makes a statement saying “to gain inspiration from those who came before us”. The ad then shows a black and white picture of people holdings hands. This looks to be a picture that represents unity and love.

0:12- 0:17

The ad cuts to WWE star Sonya Deville and she says ” to show us what it means to act with empathy and to show that love has no labels”. As she makes her statement, a picture of a sign that says “Love not Hate” appears. The picture is in black and white and the word hate has a line running through the middle of it. The ad then cuts to a short clip of Sonya at a parade, looks like Marty Gras and throwing something into the crowd and smiling while standing on a float. Then the ad cuts to another short clip of her hugging and young fan.

0:18- 0:24

The ad then introduces WWE Cody Rhodes and he makes a statement urging people to join WWE in Love Has No Labels and come together to celebrate everyone from all different backgrounds. As he states this the ad shows clips of people having fun together, Cody Rhodes hugging and comforting a fan, and another clip that seems to be a father lifting his daughter up to shoot a basketball into the basket, and individuals dancing together.

0:25- 0:30

The ad is coming to an end and shows a couple more clips of WWE stars hugging and comforting their fans and also people together smiling and showing love for one another. The Ad ends with the WWE symbol and love has no labels.

Fashion Kills

Throughout human history, fashion has been a powerful marker of social status, setting individuals apart from others in society. Fashion has become a nationwide phenomenon, but are the clothes on our backs linked to injury? In this discussion, I will focus on the often-overlooked aspects of the fashion industry, such as its contributions to climate change and its role in safety-related risks. I’ll explore the importance of wearing non-slip shoes and hard hats for workplace safety, as well as the long-term effects of high heels and tight shoes on health compared to going shoeless. Let’s consider if some fashion choices can indeed lead to injury—or even death. Does fashion kill?

Injuries in the workplace can be common, especially for those required to be on their feet, but wearing appropriate clothing and footwear can minimize these risks. For example, non-slip shoes are designed to help prevent slips and falls. A slip occurs when there is a lack of traction, while a fall involves a height component. In Slips, Trips, and Falls: Call of Duty, David P. Gelkey found that from 2012 to 2018, fall-related fatalities led to 32,000 deaths in the United States and cost an estimated $50 billion. The study revealed that 25% of falls were due to improper footwear, with a failure to wear non-slip shoes contributing to 1,335 additional deaths annually. Employees have a right to a safe work environment, and if employers fail to provide this, it becomes essential for individuals to protect themselves.

Car accidents in the United States account for around 42,000 fatalities annually, with the U.S. Department of Transportation reporting approximately 850 bicyclist deaths. A study on visibility-related factors in crashes involving bicyclists found that 74% of participants in collisions with vehicles were not wearing reflective clothing, and 79% were not wearing fluorescent clothing. Visibility aids, like reflective or fluorescent gear, reduce the likelihood of being hit while biking. Without these indicators, riders are at a higher risk.

Fashion is often seen as a commodity driven by trends in a capitalist society. While sweatshops—factories with harsh working conditions, long hours, and low wages—are widely criticized, a newer model, fast fashion, has taken over. Fast fashion is the rapid production of inexpensive clothing to meet ever-changing trends, largely driven by major corporations. While most people don’t consider their wardrobes a source of pollution, the fashion industry significantly contributes to climate change.

In our society, social media and fast-paced marketing push consumerism. An article, Changing the World Not Just Our Wardrobes: A Sensibility for Sustainable Clothing, Care and Quiet Activism, conducted a study asking participants to estimate their number of garments. The findings showed that participants underestimated the count: the average guess was 111 items, while the actual average was 146 items. This consumer behavior, a result of fast fashion, increases demand for cheap, mass-produced clothing. Yet, blaming consumers alone overlooks the larger responsibility of the fashion industry.

Major fashion corporations often avoid scrutiny regarding their role in climate change, but they are as culpable as oil giants. According to The Environmental Price of Fast Fashion, the fashion industry is a major consumer of water, accounting for ~20% of industrial water pollution due to textile treatment and dyeing, and ~35% of global CO2 emissions. CNN’s Helen Regan reported on pollution in the Dhaleshwari River in Bangladesh, describing the water as “black like an ink stain” from waste discharged by nearby garment factories. For communities in South Asia, contaminated water sources are a grim reality, with widespread sickness resulting from consumption. Fashion’s environmental toll is significant, as the industry uses nearly as much water as agriculture, which accounts for ~30% of water consumption. Regan noted that producing a single pair of jeans requires around 7,500 liters (2,000 gallons) of water—equivalent to 16,700 pounds of water.

The materials used in clothing also have environmental consequences. Natural fibers, such as cotton, wool, and silk, are sourced from plants or animals, while synthetic fibers, like polyester, nylon, and spandex, are chemically produced. Both types of fibers have drawbacks: cotton requires significant water for growth, while synthetic fibers rely on petroleum-based products. Effects of Technical Textiles and Synthetic Nanofibers on Environmental Pollution highlights the extensive use of resources, including oil for polyester production, metal for equipment, and water for industrial processes, underscoring the environmental harm caused by the industry.

Fashion’s impact on society reaches far beyond style, touching on crucial issues of safety, health, and environmental sustainability. The choices we make in clothing can affect our personal safety, in the workplace incidents related to improper footwear and the dangers bicyclists face without reflective gear. Additionally, the fast fashion industry has grown into a significant contributor to pollution and climate change, using vast amounts of water and non-renewable resources, and releasing harmful waste into ecosystems. While individuals may feel driven to follow trends, it’s essential to recognize the broader consequences of these choices. Fashion can have hidden fees, from physical risks to environmental degradation. As consumers and producers alike consider the true impact of fashion, it’s worth asking: Ultimately, the answer lies in whether we are willing to make responsible changes for a safer, as for why fashion kills.

Bruinbird’s Proposal

My research paper will be attempting to answer a question that has been bugging me for a good while now ever since I saw the movie “The Greatest Showman.” Why do audiences and critics seem to have such differing opinions on modern movie titles? I believe that it’s because of a self-created barrier between the two in regards to the expectations. These expectations being about different aspects of making a movie, the directing, shots, lighting, script writing, hired cast, and advertisability. I will be looking through various movie reviews over the past decade of movies, looking at where audiences and critics agree, disagree, and to what degree of agreeability they seem to have. I’ll be looking at movie review websites, Rotten Tomatoes and IMDB, to gather large samples of reviews, review scores, and to ensure I don’t have the bias from one singular website clouding the paper. I’ll be using “The Numbers” website to get a fair list of movies to look at for relevant years in regards to the top grossing films. As those to me feel as though they’d be fair comparisons through the years.

This paper will be about the differing rating criteria between critics and audiences. I believe that critics care more about the perceived “depth” of a film and its message when giving their ratings, while Audiences will give more points towards a film that seeks to entertain, looking more to enjoy themselves than seek a deeper philosophical meaning.

0:01-0:02

  • The ad starts with a high angle shot above a wooden table
  • The scene is set inside in a room with warm lighting, making it seem comfortable and gives a feeling of togetherness.
  • I would not say this takes place in a house, as they are over a carpeted area that is then divided to a tile type of floor which is more typical in some type of public building.
  • You can see four people sitting down, the two at the top of the frame you can see clearly over their heads, the two at the bottom of the frame, just the ends of their arms
  • The two individuals at the top of the frame are women. The one on the right can be seen wearing a fancy red hat along with a matching red outfit. Under her hat she has unnatural blond hair, and her sleeves are rolled up to expose an elegant gold bracelet that matches her outfit. She is also wearing glasses which may indicate she is older as well. The one on the right of the frame has a soft pink sweater with a matching watch. It can be seen she is a woman as well by her mid-length wavy brunette hair.
  • The woman on the bottom right of the frame we can just see the end of her arms, we can tell she is a woman by her hands (smaller thinner, feminine also well-manicured, and if anything very natural/elegant nail polish. She also has a silver bracelet that matches her long sleeve flower blouse. The individual on the bottom right is not exactly clear on whether it is a man or a woman, the hands are a smaller size but have tattoos on the top. Of them, they are also wearing a long sleeve dress shirt with striped cuffs, and over that a beige sweater, this person is also wearing a brown watch and a rainbow bracelet, possibly indicating some association to the lgbtq community.
  • two of them sitting across from the other two on the long sides of the table. All of the ladies are of different nationalities and one of the ladies on the top left is in a wheelchair, the director chose this group to show diversity in this book club.
  • They are all dressed in casual/upscale casual, they all jewelry (watches, bracelets).
  • On the wooden table there are a couple nice purses along with a pair of glasses and a couple water bottles (not glasses of water as would be more typical in a home), there are also two books laid horizontally in the middle of the table so the title can be seen. United Horizons: The Power of Community
  • Each of the individuals also is holding that same book, all open to the same page, indicating they are in in some kind of book club as the lady on the top led .
  • This is used to show how the table connects them and brings them together.

0:02-0:04

  • Scene suddenly changes and the high angle shot stays consistent for much of this ad. This time the frame crooked was recorded slanted to the right to show a sense of playfulness and a relaxing environment.
  • It takes place likely in a house based off of the hardwood floors and the patterned area rug, giving the scene an intimate feel, the individuals here are not likely strangers.
  •  This scene features a small square game table with four people, one sitting on each side
  • The person on the right of the frame is clearly visible with his  short blond hair and gold glasses we can tell it’s a man, as for the other 3 people in the frame, it is a little unclear to tell their gender but their different skin colors show diversity as well as their different ages as can be seen by their hands.
  • There are two small tables of snacks set up on opposite corners of the center table as well to show it is not just a quick game but an event they gathered to enjoy
  • The first part of the scene features them starting to play what seems to be a foreign board game. I knew it was mahjong as I used to play it with my mom and grandmother, but it would just seem like a unique game to someone who hasn’t seen it. They are all collectively shuffling the pieces around, showing their collective enjoyment of the game
  • The frame cuts then zooms in to the table after, showing they’ve started the game because of its organized setup in the middle and with each person having their tiles on their side.
  • The person on the left’s hand positioning seems to be in thought as to what the next move is, this scene shows the enjoyment of a tabletop game together.

0:04-0:05

  •  Scene changes to display a vertical rectangular lunch table, still in the high angle shot, with a bag of some kind of orange snack in the center children are taking turns reaching into
  • The setting seems to be at a school as it is a typical table found in that area, also by the small children and adult
  • There are bookbags and a basketball on the floor and on the table bench towards the top of the frame
  • There is an adult on the right side of the frame, he appears to be a coach as he is wearing a whistle around his neck, dressed in sporty attire, and has a clipboard in his hand with a gameplan drawn on it.
  • It appears to be they are in the midst of a recreational basketball game as the 5 children are all sitting or kneeling on the bench at the table wearing mesh scrimmage vests of either blue or yellow in color. They are mostly boys but there also is one girl, probably used to show it isn’t a specific boy’s game. The director chose this to show how even though they are on different teams, the table still brings them together and leaves no one out.

0:05-0:07

  •  The scene cuts, then continues the high angle shot above another wooden tabletop surface vertically. There is restaurant lighting, warm and easy on the eyes.
  • The table has a couple of glasses near the top of the frame, one of which seems to be a white wine and the other perhaps an ice water in a red glass. There are also a plate of charcuterie in the center which appears to already have been mostly eaten, as can also be distinguished by the crumbs and couple of dirty napkins on the table.
  • There are 5 people in this celebratory event, as we can tell by the 5 glasses that clink they toast. These five glasses are all different and all contain different drinks which leads one to assume that they are likely at a restaurant
  • The director chose this setup as it shows how close they are and how they came together to celebrate a special occasion.

0:07-0:09

  •  The scene cuts, then continues the high angle shot over a horizontal table draped in a yellow tablecloth.
  • In the top of the frame, one can see hardwood floors and a red patterned rug, this leads to believe the scene is set in a dining room in a house.
  • The table is covered in a large variety of foods, including salad, chicken, and naan bread. Whoever is attending this event was made to feel special as it goes above your usual pizza and cake kind of party. This indicates to the viewer that this is a celebration, giving a feeling of community, family, and overall closeness.
  • In the top. Of the frame we can see presumably a woman from the puffy olive jacket and blond hair. Our attention though, is drawn to the little girl in the center of the upper portion of the frame, she appears to be looking upwards in excitement at a man in who is serving her food, we can tell because her and his left hands are both on the plate while he serves her with his right, probably her father.
  • The director chose this to show the relationship between generations and how they “belong”

0:09-0:11

  •  The scene cuts, continuing the high angle shot over a vertical plywood work surface, the camera tilted to the left that gives a less structured, more “in the works” kind of feel.
  • There is a cloth tarp covering the floor, to prevent messes, and there are two buckets along the right-hand side floor, with what appears to be a bag of concrete. This indicates they are currently in a construction zone,
  • The table has a plan for what seems to be a building, judging its size and complexity of the drawing.
  • There are two people in the left frame, they appear to work there as they have gloves on and long sleeves. The one on the bottom left, we can only see the top of his yellow hardhat and his arm as he is helping the person to the left by pointing something out on the plan. This is done to show these people help each other to all work towards a goal. We are also introduced to a person that walks in from the right side of the frame to the end of the table, where he sets his hardhat on the table, indicating to the viewer that he too, is a part of that group, showing they all belong there and are a part of something.

0:11-0:14

  •  The scene cuts and continues in a high angle shot over a crooked to the right, horizontal table. We can see this table has what appears to be some type of tabletop roleplaying game. We can assume this is Dungeons and Dragons, also presumably a battle scene.
  • There are people around the table, who seem like the players of this game. They are waiting in anticipation for what is going to happen next.
  • The directors did this to show how close of a group they are, gather together over common interests.

0: 0:14- 0:16

  •  The scene cuts, continuing in a high angle shot over a straight horizontal table. The table is a light gray color, the type you would find in an office. It also has a wooden trim around it to show that it means business.
  • On the table we can see a computer, files, and each a business plan. We can safely assume they are there for a business meeting.
  • We can also see that there are at least 6 people in that meeting, 3 men and 3 women.
  • The director wanted to show us that everyone belongs to that table as they share the common interest of improving a company.

16-0:17

  •  The scene cuts, continuing in a high angle shot over a ping pong table that is slanted to the right. This shows the excitement of the two players and the spectator as they watch the match go on.
  • These three people are brought together by their similar interest to the game, the one on the top side of the table is moving his paddle in anticipation to play next.

0:17-0:20

  •  The scene cuts to a horizontal wooden table, still in a high angle shot. This table had a lighter colored plastic table next to it as well, to show that it is not a fancy donation, but more of a community canned food drive.
  • On the table there are cans on the right and bags of toiletries in the middle, along with socks and bottles on the left-hand side. Under the table we can see cases of bottled water and understand that this variety of supplies were donated by the community.
  • At the top of the frame there is a person taking stuff out of one of the bags and placing it in the box to our left. The man on the opposite side can be seen handing out cans to another individual on the other side, showing how they are delivering these goods to the people.
  • The director chose to do this to show how close the community is and how they can all belong at that table.

0:20-0:29

  •  The scene cuts, and now we see the inside of the house, it is decorated, and the walls are green. The large sign in the back reads “Welcome to the neighborhood” There are tables filled with the same type of food we had seen in the earlier scene with the yellow tablecloth.
  • The wall decorated with a visible cross indicating it a Christian household
  • We can identify the little girl and the hands of who was helping her father from an earlier scene We can assume they are mother father and daughter.
  • They appear to be welcoming in embrace by the guests of the party, specifically the wife. We can also see the welcoming handshake between the presumed grandmother and the husband in the back.
  • This couple is of darker skin, the wife is wearing a head covering with muted colors along with modest clothing probably indicating that they are Muslim. The husband in the back has a beard and also is wearing muted colors, and we can tell they are married as they are both wearing wedding rings as well
  • We can see how welcoming this family is to their new community, inviting these guests to their home. They can be seen to belong there, bringing the community closer together, and the director chose to have everyone in the scene of different faiths as it shows that even though they believe in different religions, they still come together.
  • The wife appears to also greet the little girl by leaning down and waving hi, but I don’t believe the little girl is deaf since in the end of the scene she is moving her mouth as if she were talking, and she is young enough to where if she were deaf she would be signing too, and if she were deaf she probably wouldn’t have learned to talk yet since she wouldn’t be able to hear.

Audio

  • There is uplifting music that somewhat distracting from just how much is going on in the scene, also since the scenes are only several seconds long.
  • The voice over just talks about how everyone brings something different to the table and how we all belong,
  • If anything I got more from the video without the audio as there was so much information to get from each scene that the audio distracts from.

Sitcom:30 Youth Vaping Prevention

0.00 – 0.01

The ad starts in the setting of a living room; light is coming through the window, so the time is around midday. A young woman is sitting crisscrossed on the living room couch with an open laptop resting on her knees. She is alone in this space, looking at the laptop screen, and her hands are placed above the keyboard.

0.02

The next frame shows four teenagers rushing into the living room to now stand across from the young woman on the couch. They are all looking towards the young woman on the couch. The four teenagers are dressed in 1980s teenage-style clothing. There are two guys and two girls. One of the girls is dressed in a cheerleader outfit and has a pair of pom poms in hand, she is tilting her head to the side and has a concerned look on her face. The other teenage girl is dressed in what looks to be her school outfit: a bright pink skirt with a white and blue patterned vest and belt and purse to match the blue. The boy standing next to the cheerleader is also dressed in what looks to be his school outfit of light blue jeans, a purple unbuttoned shirt, a pink shirt underneath, and retro glasses on his face; he also has a concerned look on his face. The last guy also dressed in a school outfit is wearing a yellow overall with a blue patterned unbuttoned shirt and blue belt to match. He also has a concerned expression on his face.

It is assumed that these are a group of friends from school that may have left school for a school sporting event, given they are dressed up and one is in a cheerleader’s outfit.

0.03

The next frame shows that the young woman on the couch has now focused her attention on the group of teenagers standing up in front of her.

0.04

The next frame shifts back to the four teenagers, the cheerleader and the other girl dressed in the pink skirt have now turned their heads up towards the guy standing in between them. The cheerleader now has an even more concerned look on her face and the other’s show serious expressions on their faces. The guy standing in between the two girls has his mouth open and is looking straight towards the young woman sitting on the couch.

It is assumed that he is now telling her important information, given the looks on their faces.

0.05- 0.06

The frame is now shifted to the young woman on the couch, who has now changed her expression to a concerned and confused look. She is looking straight at the guy in between the other two girls.

0.07-0.08

The frame shifts again to the four teenagers, now all their faces are focused on the girl with the pink skirt, as she now has her mouth open and has a serious expression on her face.

It is assumed she is telling some kind of important information.

0.09

The frame is now zoomed onto the face of the cheerleader, she has a concerned and sad look on her face.

0.10- 0.11

The frame is now zoomed out to where we can see both the group of teenagers and the young woman sitting on the couch. The guy dressed in overalls now has his hand out toward the young woman. They are all slightly leaning toward her still having concerned looks on their faces. The cheerleader has moved her arms downward.

It is assumed that they are telling her something they are upset about, given that the cheerleader has now put her arms down in a way to show frustration.

0.12

The next frame shows the four teenagers again the boy on the far left has now shifted his attention to the cheerleader as her arms move up again in a pleading manner while her mouth opens. Her eyebrows are turned up and the guy standing next to her shows a concerned look on his face as he looks at the young woman on the couch.

It is assumed that the cheerleader is pleading with the young woman on the couch, the four teenagers body language now shows that they might want something from the young woman.

0.18

The next frame shows the young woman on the couch with a deeply concerned and confused look on her face. Her eyes look between the two girls in confusion.

0.19

The next frame shows the group of teenagers again, this time the girl in the pink skirt has her arms folded and has a look of disappointment on her face. The guy to the left of her shows an expression of disgust, while the guy in the middle remains concerned. the cheerleader has now titled her head even more and has a look of judgment and shock on her face.

0.20-0.23

The framed picture of the teenagers is now paused, and a series of words is presented across the screen picture. The words state “Wacky sitcom teens aren’t the best people to talk to your kid about vaping.”

We now know that this ad is about vaping and that these teens dressed in wacky apparel are talking to the young woman on the couch about vaping. We also now know that this ad is directed towards audiences with children, such as parents and guardians.

0.24

The next frame is now zoomed on the face of the young woman sitting on the couch, she is looking upwards and now has a look of sadness and worry.

0.25

The next frame shows that the teenagers have disappeared and an older man has now entered the living room where the teenagers were standing. The screen is paused is two words are shown, and they state “You are.”

These new words correspond to the previous text to parents, we can assume that the older man is the parent that now gets involved.

0.26

The next frame shows both the young girl and the older man looking at each other. The young girl has her hand on the very top of her laptop as the older man is now closer to the couch and has his knees slightly bent.

It is assumed that the older man is now about to have a seat next to the young girl, and that she will close her laptop to give her attention to him.

0.27

The next frame shows the man now bent more towards the couch and his hand on the young girl’s shoulder. She has a laptop closed and is now showing an expressive smile towards the older man.

0.28-0.30

The frame shows both the young girl and older man sitting together on the couch with the older man’s hand still on the young girl’s shoulder. The text across this picture now states, “TalkAboutVaping.org”

In Conclusion:

It is now clear that at the beginning of this video, a group of teenagers, who are friends with the young girl on the couch are trying to advise her and convince her that vaping isn’t safe. The video then promotes parents taking action and conversing with their children about the dangers of vaping by showing a father figure approaching the young girl after the “wacky teenagers” shared their concerns. The young girl then looks relieved and happier now that the father figure is sitting down and conversing with her.

Definition Rewrite- Starfire

Racism in the education system is still very active in our society today, despite the efforts of the civil rights movement in the 1960s. Students are still segregated in a sense and not everyone gets to experience elementary school, middle school, and high school the same way. Unfortunately for some, the experience is quite disappointing. This problem has much to do with systemic racism and poverty. Systemic racism is especially seen in private education. The majority of private schools are made up of white students and very few minority students.  In these circumstances there is a lack of equality amongst students in the private education system. Equality is when fair treatment and access to opportunities is given the same to all. However, no matter how much the issue of equity between white and minority students is addressed, nothing ever seems to come to resolve this issue. In fact it is often dismissed, overlooked, or just completely ignored.

There is a very wide achievement gap between white and minority students. A lower achievement rate especially among black students in urban and suburban neighborhoods. The most recent statistic on the graduation rate of black students from universities is only about forty percent, whereas the graduation rate of white students is about sixty four percent. Again, this brings us back to the topic of equality. Minority students, especially black, are not given or even offered the same opportunities that white students are. Some of these examples include a lack of support from teachers/ professors, resources, and the quality of education they are receiving in the classroom. These factors can play such an important role in the motivation of the students and the desire for students to learn and achieve big goals when  it comes to schooling. This goes even outside of the classroom.

Disciplinary actions are evidently different amongst white and minority students. The punishments disproportionately affect minority students. Black and hispanic students are often given a much harsher punishment than their white counterparts. School authorities are very quick to suspend or expel black and latino students whereas their white counterparts get a “slap on the wrist” for performing the same defiant behaviors. This again goes back to equality. Why is it that black and latino students receive much harsher punishment than their white counterparts and both parties are performing the same behaviors? Why isn’t there a sense of equity when it comes to punishing students? These unfairly distributed forms of punishment also play a very large part in the perception minority students have in school and their future success in education, according to the research that was studied by the American Psychological Association. Not only does it affect their perception of school but also negatively affects their perception and relationships with teachers and other school authorities. It can perpetuate negative stereotypes against racial and ethnic minority students and even affect how they’re treated by their white peers. This unequal treatment can start as young as pre-k, ages three and four.

Public schools in urban areas with a high percentage of minority students tend to lack the necessary resources that are needed for a good quality education. Old, worn down, and outdated textbooks, no computers, and no access to advanced courses. Even the teachers lack the resources they need in order to provide their students with the proper education they need in order to move forward in the future school years. The schools themselves are even run down, old, and dirty buildings. These schools are overall underfunded and neglected by the state. Schools in areas of poverty need more attention and investments from the state they’re in. Lastly, many of these schools contain teachers who are not very experienced in the field of education. This is not to say that these teachers don’t try their best or are completely unsuccessful, but having teachers with more experience and qualifications could help the students achieve more in their academics. What also does not help this case is the fact that the student to teacher ratio is much higher, causing the schools to contain very large classes without the correct amount of teachers needed to support these classes.

Students can see when they’re being invested in. Going to a run down building, with overcrowded classrooms, and lacking essential materials everyday only wears down the students’ motivation to want to succeed. Many even drop out very early on before getting the chance to receive a high school diploma. These are the young kids that often turn to a life in the streets, risking their life and freedom everyday just to barely get by. Those who do receive their diploma feel that high school was enough and would rather step right into the world of labor instead of getting a college degree in something that could make their lives much more comfortable in the long run.

There is so much that has to be fixed in the American education system. The many advantages given to and taken away from students is completely unjust and hypocritical to what this country stands for. Urban schools deserve to have better funding and better resources. Students who attend urban schools deserve to have much better education quality and effort from their authoritative figures. Minority students attending both public and private schools deserve better treatment. In fact they deserve the same treatment as their white counterparts. Lastly they deserve to be given the same opportunities. Having no opportunities or even being given a chance to actually have access to advanced education is beyond unfair when it is all given to the white students. The sad part is, there are so many smart students that have the brains to do so many great things, things that could possibly impact the whole world and the chance is wasted solely because of the systemic racism and poverty this country still enforces on the minority community. We have a long way to go, but it does not mean that the day equal treatment isn’t even a question won’t ever come to be.

Visual Rhetoric—Who’sOnFirst?

Ad: Child Car Safety – Love Protects

Child Car Safety | Love Protects :30

0:00

The first frame of this ad shows the camera centered on the excited face of an adult and a young child on the side in the foreground, slightly blurred. The adult appears to be a father figure and both he and the child are smiling. They are in a car that you can just see the outline of and the background can be seen as a clear blue sky and bright trees.

0:01 – 0:02

In the next frames the father figure is seen crawling into the car and reaching to work on the child’s car seat, but still turning and looking at the child and keeping his playful happy features. The next frame shows the child as the main focus. The son is smiling and making eye contact with his father and making some gestures with his hands. The eye contact between the father and son show a loving and trusting relationship and you can tell they both care for each other.

0:02 – 0:03

The next shot shows the camera from across the car to show a wider view and more of the car and the father son duo’s figures. The father is wearing a darker simple short sleeved button down shirt. The son is wearing a bright colored T shirt and jeans and velcro shoes. The car can be seen parked outside of a grocery store. I believe this to be significant because it shows that even doing menial chores or short drives requires attention to safety. The car is a simple gray interior and the carseat matches perfectly with the interior of the car. The shot includes the back of the toddler aged car seat which shows us that it has indeed been set up correctly. The shot includes the safety handles in the very top of the frame which I believe is just a further nod to acknowledging safety in cars. A colorful but clean blanket is shown in the other seat and a stuffed animal in good condition is seen further down on the floor. The floor of the car is perfectly black and no dirt is seen on it. The stuffed animal, the blanket, and the cleanliness of the car all point to a safe environment.

0:04 – 0:05

The next two frames show the father covering his face and popping out in a silly game of peek-a-boo and the child reciprocating with a silly face. The close up on the father shows us a wedding ring on his left hand and that his nails are manicured and polished looking. His hands look smooth, not rough like he works a physical labor intensive job. He is clean shaven which gives a more youthful and innocent look. All of this points to him being a safe figure.

0:05 – 0:06

Here we see the father clipping in the front of the car seat safety feature which ties all the belts together.

0:06 – 0:07

Here we see a new duo introduced. The shadows of two taller figures are seen playing casual (not super aggressive) basketball. The shadows are cast on a sidewalk or driveway type background that is pretty smooth, no cracks or big stains. The next frame shows what appears to be a mother and daughter playing some basketball. The mother is wearing a darker outfit and the daughter is in lighter colors.

I think the color contrast between the younger and older characters (with the younger kids in bright pastels and the parents in darker clothing) signifies the parents being more experienced and having more responsibility to keep the innocent youth safe from the dangers of the outside world.

0:07 – 0:08

This shot shows the daughter shooting a basket and the mom putting up her hands to stop it but not being able to block it and it swooshes in the basket. We see the edge of a house signifying that we are in a driveway and a neat white house is seen in the background.

I think the shooting of the shot and the mom not being able to stop it signifies how even though parents may be confident in their driving skills, they may not be able to stop everything.

0:09 – 0:10

The next frame shows a center on the daughter holding up her hands and smiling in a victory pose supposedly for making the basket. The mother then walks up to her and hands her a water bottle, smiling at her and putting a hand on her shoulder.

0:11 – 0:12

The next shot is in front of an apartment complex, also white and pristine looking. The frame shows a new child, also wearing pastel clothing and wearing a backpack, smiling and looking down, opening the passenger side front door of a car.

0:13 – 0:14

The next frame shows the supposed mother of the daughter (in simple plain clothing) on the other side of the car with her younger brother (in pastel clothing) adjusting him in his booster seat. The car is also very clean, a cream color. The mother looks up with a somewhat surprised look on her face then with a cock of her head and still with a slight smile points to the backseat.

0:15 – 0:16

The shot then goes back to the daughter and shows her sighing slightly then closing the door of the car and going to the back.

0:17 – 0:18

The next shot shows her buckling into the backseat and giving a mildly annoyed look with pursed lips across the car to her mother.

This signifies that you can’t just let kids do what they want if it compromises their safety and that sometimes the more loving thing is to put them where they don’t want to be.

0:18 – 0:19

The next shot shows a close up new father figure, this one in a brighter colored t-shirt, not pastel but not bland either. The father is seen cooing and smiling down.

0:19 – 0:20

The next shot shows the baby that the father is working on strapping into a newborn carseat. This child is by far the youngest out of all of the ones we’ve seen. The child is smiling up at his father as he straps him in.

0:20 – 0:22

The next frame shows a close up on the fathers hands as he does the final buckle in of the car seat then frames out to show him adjusting the straps. His hands are similarly smooth and well manicured. The car’s interior is also clean and we can see a house in the background of the frame.

0:23 – 0:24

The next shot shows just the hand of the father rubbing the top of the infant’s head affectionately. The child is nestled in the car seat and a good amount of the car seat can be seen on either side of his head.

0:25 – 0:26

The next shot goes back to the mother – daughter – son trio we saw previously and shows the mother affectionately correcting the son’s seatbelt one last time.

0:26 – 0:27

The next shot shows us back at the first father son duo as he is on eye level with his son and pats his knee as he gets up to go drive.

0:28 – 0:30

The final shot shows the newborn from the last duo in the car looking out the window as they drive as the URL to a government safety announcement is played across the screen.

Final Thoughts:

The description of the ad says that it is a “PSA celebrating car seat safety as an act of love and encourages parents and caregivers to show their love by double-checking that their children are in the right seat for their age and size” I think the ad did an excellent job of portraying this message as it showed lots of love and affection between the parents and caregivers and their children and by showing the different ages of kids and the different car seats they could be in throughout the ad.

Listening with the sound:

Listening with the sound played a man speaking over the background noise of the characters with a clever poem like of words that aligned with the shots of the ad. I thought it added a lot with clever word usage such as “so buckle up.” However I thought the point of the ad was conveyed clearly enough without the sound.

Visual Rewrite—MAD ClTY

0.00: The ad starts off with a mother and her daughter walking down a street on the sidewalk in an urban neighborhood. The mother looks rather modest with a clean outfit, wearing a sweater and earrings that go with the outfit. The daughter appears to be in a private school uniform. The resemblance of the two characters is tied even closer by the pink outfits: the mother has a pink shirt, while the daughter’s uniform is pink as well, with nearly identical white sweater fits matching on top of both of them. In the background, a rugged man approaches, wearing a leather jacket, a tank top, jeans, and boots. His hair is messy, as is his beard.

0.040.06: The man approaching the mother and daughter has reached the sidewalk, standing and staring at the mother, who is bent down talking to the kid. The man is standing a good 8 feet away from the women. As the man continues to stare at the mother and her daughter, the mother crouches down talking to her daughter and turns her head to the left. It can be inferred that the mother notices the man looking at her. A mood shift occurs; it seems like fear has entered the mother’s eyes. With fear running in the mother’s eyes, she grabs her daughter’s arms. She looks like she is about to start running away from the man.

0.08: Mom is running from the man, then stops; she is staring off into the distance like a deer caught in headlights. A face of outer fear is in her eyes. There is no longer a mother with her daughter on a walk; rather, it has become a chase out of the neighborhood. In the background is the man, still standing in his original position. It seems that he pulled something out of his pocket, unsure of what it is due to the camera blurring him out in this frame. Could it be a weapon or an item of use for him?

0.09: The viewer can see what the mother was looking at intently; there lies a Hispanic man who looks to be wearing a button-up T-shirt. He is also staring at the woman with eyes of concern. He is standing around a street corner, just looking.

0.100.13: The mom turns to her right with the child in hand; she quickly crosses the street as a white van hits its brakes. The mother abruptly and foolishly crosses the road without looking both ways. Holding her daughter’s hand and running aimlessly on the sidewalk, she looks scared; the daughter looks scared. The white van makes a left turn to approach the main character. The mother picks up the child as she slows her down from escaping.

0.14: As the mother is holding the child running in the background pans to a gangster looking man maybe 30 African American beanie white shirt jean hand near his belt region. Stares at the women as well. There has been 3 three people seen staring at the mother. Who is she or what is the importance of the child goes through my mind

0.15-0.20: The mother continues to run, holding the child. Reaching a park area, a field of grass with trees around her, the neighborhood still in front. As many individuals appear out of nowhere surrounding her, she lowers the child down to the ground. Everyone seems to be staring at. The mother’s face is in distress; this expression tells the audience that she has done something wrong. The Camera pans into a 360 around her now we can see the all the new individuals staring their are 8 people are around the mother all looking.

0.20-0.21: The Rugged Man appears with a police officer standing behind him, the Hispanic man from before. He points at the lady as they approach the mother. The camera blurs the approaching characters; rather, it focuses on the mother, whose body language is tense like spaghetti under too much pressure; it could break. The daughter is still in her arms. The question becomes, why? As the Rugged Man points toward the lady, the camera pans to them as they have become the focus. He shows the officer his phone.

0.24-0.25: Pan down to his phone it read about an AMBER Alert for Child that is 8 years old, brown eyes, brown hair, and a white sweater. Suspect being around 30 years old female, with brown eyes, and brown hair, Match identically with the mother. Which isn’t a mother rather was trying to kidnap the child.

0.26: The final scenes of the case is the fake mother being placed under arrest by the officer with the people surrounding her earlier looking on to her downfall. And she could have gotten away with it if it wasn’t following their civil duty.

The Canadian Telecommunication Association has done a good job describe a scene that would seen ordinary in daily life such as seeing a motherly figure walking with her daughter in hand. Using that has a method of building concern for the mother. As she running away from what it looks like thugs it is brought to light at the end the only person up to no good was the proper lady. This is a good form of dispelling that these crimes could be done by ordinary looking people too not just thugs.

Logos behind the beauty of this ad is the fact that it uses one’s inherent bias against themselves, as we thought the fake mother was the victim in the situation. Rather, she was abusing her looks to get away with the crime. Pathos goes around toward our emotion; I don’t think it is human nature to look deeply into a situation. Rather, being aware of the call from AMBER Alert can ensure that you are aware of your surroundings to prevent any crimes from happening.

Visual Rhetoric – PRblog24

• 0:01 – 0:02: The ad begins with a close-up of someone’s hands holding a photograph of two racecar drivers. The rest of the frame is slightly blurred, making the photo the main focus. The camera then shifts to a shot of a man wearing a NASCAR hat, with his eyes closed, suggesting he is reminiscing a past with the person in the photo.

• 0:03: The camera cuts to a man standing outside on a soccer field. He is dressed in a uniform, standing tall, and looking into the distance.

• 0:04: A new scene shows a man in a Rays baseball uniform on a field during a game. He holds a bat with both hands close to his chest, and the crowd around him suggests this is a professional baseball game.

• 0:05: A woman is lying on an empty soccer field, facing away from the camera. She is spinning a soccer ball in her hands above her chest.

• 0:06: The camera captures a close-up of the woman’s head as she lies on the soccer field with her eyes closed.

• 0:08: The next shot shows the same woman sitting cross-legged on the soccer field under bright stadium lights. She holds a soccer ball in her hands while speaking.

• 0:09: A man is seen climbing into the window of a racecar, wearing sunglasses and a uniform. A crew member with headphones stands behind him. In the background, there is a stadium full of fans.

• 0:10 – 0:11: Inside the racecar, the driver receives a fist bump from a similarly dressed crew member outside the window. The camera then transitions to a group of soccer players in uniform, lined up on the field with their hands behind their backs.

• 0:12 – 0:16: The man in the Rays uniform steps up to bat and hits a baseball. The camera then shows him speaking on the field before showing him moving his arms while holding the bat.

• 0:17: The scene changes and a woman is running. This may suggest she is dribbling a soccer ball due to her uniform. The camera then cuts to a huddle of soccer players with their hands in a circle.

• 0:18 – 0:19: The camera shows a soccer player in a yellow uniform scoring a goal, followed by a celebration with his teammates.

• 0:20 – 0:21: The Rays player is shown from behind, high-fiving someone off-screen. The camera cuts back to the soccer field, capturing a goal from a different angle.

• 0:22 – 0:23: A close-up of a man in a soccer uniform shows him speaking directly to the camera. The scene shifts to another man signing a woman’s shirt. She is smiling, which shows she is a fan of his in the stands.

• 0:24 – 0:25: The NASCAR driver reappears, leaning against his car in uniform, and the camera pans to him speaking.

• 0:26 – 0:30: The screen displays the message “Love, Your Mind” alongside the website “Find resources at LoveYourMindToday.org.”

Never Happens – Gained Access :30 | Heatstroke Prevention

0:00: Immediately, the first appearance on the screen is a child (white) that is sitting in the center foreground where we are at the same eye level as the child. It appears that the child is sitting on top of a rectangular carpet on a wooden floor in a narrow beige hallway with multiple pathways with different entrances which indicates that the child is inside of a house. There’s one entrance to the right side of the child of the screen, one doorway entrance behind the child towards background, which is the end of the hallway, and one to the left end of the hallway which appears to extend further left. The door at the end of the hallway is slightly open which emits a color of baby blue.

The child’s face shows a hue of red and scrunched up which appears that the child is crying in the scene. What was the child crying about? Is the child throwing a tantrum? The child looks around the age of one to three years old because of the fully-grown blond hair that is draped down to shoulders lengths and is wearing a diaper. We would assume the child would be a boy despite having long hair because of the color clothing. The child is wearing baby blue, and white horizontal stripes across the T-shirt, and a pair of dark blue baby crocs, but apparently the child is missing one of the crocs because the child is only wearing a sock and one croc. Could that be the reason why the child is crying and throwing a tantrum? It could also be a girl despite the color clothing. The child is looking a little to the right side then proceeds to look upwards. Why is the child looking there? Is it the culprit of what made the child cry or the aftermath of what happened? As the child was crying, the camera slowly moved to the left as it follows the motion of the child lifting both of its legs up while still sitting on the carpet floor, then slowly stops and wobbles back and forth a little as the child’s legs came back down onto the carpet. Suggests that the camera could be following the motion of the child’s tantrum.

The way they make this scene to make the child stand out more is not only because the child is at the center foreground, but the difference of the amount of color that is shown on the screen. There are more beige colors than baby blue where the color of the baby blue from the door, and the color of the child’s shirt is one-third of the overall screen that is centered vertically while two-thirds of the screen is beige colored which is from the left and right side of the screen vertically. Not only that, but the door that is emitting baby blue helps to show the outlines of the child’s head to prevent the blends between beige and blond. Another important key factor of how the child stands out is how the overall scene is mostly straight vertical lines while the only horizontal line we see is the shirt that the child is wearing.

0:01-0:02: The next scene transition to a man standing on the right side of the screen with a wall that is covered half of the screen. His face appearance looked distraught based on his actions of taking a deep breath, sighing, and then looking downwards to the right side of him. Indicating that he was stressed or tired. What was the reason he looked stressed? The man is also in a room which could indicate that he is also in the same house as the child. His blond hair and brown eyes could indicate that he is the father of the child because the child also has the same characteristics. Could the child be the source of his stressful behavior?

The way the composition of this scene did was the use of the lighting in the scene. The right side where the man is standing  has more brightness than what it is shown on the left side. Also the amount of details where the right side has more objects and items like the ceiling light, the potted plant, and a part of a corner shelf while the left side is strictly just a plain mono color.

0:03: The scene went back to the child but this time an arm is sticking out from the right side of the screen and is holding a TV remote and is giving it to the child. It could be the father from the previous scene. The child stopped crying as soon as the child saw the remote. Could it be that the child wanted to watch TV?

0:04: An abrupt switch to a different scene with a different person. This time it appears to be a woman in the household. This could be the wife of the family. It looks like she is about to head out of the house based on the strap that she is carrying on her right shoulder, and she is standing in front of a windowed door. It could be a purse or a bag that she is wearing. It looks like she is either looking for something or calling for someone based on her looking downwards at the object she is carrying, and her hand was moving towards her bag. The way the light emits from the windowed door helps make the woman stands out, and her sweater has multiple thin black line around it which shows the volume between the vertical and horizontal lines.

0:05-0:07: Another abrupt transition scene is now another child, but this time an older, and taller one that is standing behind the glass door. The child appears to be a girl from her fluffy skirt, pink straps which seem to be her backpack, and a bandana. She could be another child of the family based on how she is wearing baby blue just like the child from the earlier scene. We can tell that she is inside the household because her face is very close to the glass door where her face is smeared and looking towards her right. Where is she looking? She is possibly looking at the potted plants outside until she turns around looking happy and running towards the same woman from the previous scene. We now see the girls back side where it is a unicorn backpack which we are assuming that she is going to school.

0:07:0:08: The scene did another abrupt transition and this times, it’s a black man that is in the foreground and a black little girl in the background. We are assuming that they are a father and daughter scenario. They appear to be outside because there are pavements, bushes, and a chair in the background. The father seems to be in a vehicle because there is a seatbelt at the right side of the screen, and both the daughter and the father seems to be at their own household driveway because there is a bucket of color chalks on the pavement, which the daughter is using the chalks to make art at their own property. The father is holding some sort of tube that has a hole in it. Either he is cleaning or fixing his car.

0:08-0:09: The scene cuts and zooms to the father’s legs where he is walking to the left side of the screen. Where was he going? Then the camera focused on the daughter as the father left the stage, looking down and playing until she saw her father walk away, and then look towards the camera. Assuming that she is looking at the car because the camera didn’t change angles.

0:10-0:14: We’ve come to a different angle where we are looking at the back side of the car on ground level where a single tire fills up the display. The car is the foreground however it is blurred because the camera is focusing on a part of a leg which could be the same daughter from the previous scene. The scene shows the motion that she is going inside of the car. Then it shows the act of her pressing a button inside of the car. What did the button do? From pressing the button, the scene shows the outside part of the car door where the door is slowly closing.

0:14-0:17: It showed different scene angles such as a bucket, the house, the same car, and an open garage. This could represent silence where there is no motion, no life, and only static.

0:17-0:24: We now go back to the father who appears to be inside of the open garage because we can see the same car at the background, and the garage door is above the fathers head. The father had a confused expression and looked behind him to his right side as he probably noticed something was off. As he turned around to look, the camera was now placed inside the car facing the father through the front of the car window. Probably the view of the daughter who got into the car. The father’s head was looking towards the right, and then towards the car assuming that he couldn’t find his daughter from the last time he saw her. As the father was facing the camera, the father made a run towards the right side of the screen. This indicates that the father puts the pieces together. As the father rushes to the right side of the screen, the camera follows the father until the father reaches to the side of the car door. Then the scene transitions into the father, lifting his daughter away from the car as the car door opens. The daughter’s face looks weary. Was she tired? As the father embraces the daughter.

0:25-0:30: A caption pops up showing the statistics of hot car deaths when a child gets into the car. While the captions appear, there’s a close shot between the father and daughter where the father looked relived and smiled. Probably after what happened at the previous scene. Then another caption pops up that says to prevent hot car deaths, and three specific words showed up one by one. Each word were STOP, LOOK, and LOCK. And then black screen.

Overview: The way the filmmakers are doing was to use the pathos approach where it shows the connections between the parent and a child. Each scene shows different interactions with of how each parent and child acts together. It was to show that it’s a duty as a parent to take care and look after them, and never lose sight of them.
