Core Value 1. My work demonstrates that I used a variety of social and interactive practices that involve recursive stages of exploration, discovery, conceptualization, and development.

I achieved this goal this semester with lots of trial and error. What I mean by this is that I had so much information on my topic I had a hard time explaining my argument how I wanted to. This would lead me to use lots of communication with my professor, leading to massive changes in my work for the better. I would use this communication throughout all of my arguments however I felt as if this argument really showed how I improved throughout the semester. I would also discover many sources and use them all throughout my arguments. I believe with the constant feedback and exploration through sources and using them, that I have developed significantly as a writer.

Core Value 2. My work demonstrates that I read critically and that I placed texts into conversation with one another to create meaning by synthesizing ideas from various discourse communities.

I met this goal this semester by showcasing how I can take my side of the argument and provide an argument against it which I then would read critically and masterfully take it apart. I would go on to compile many resources to go against my argument. By doing this I was synthesizing many different points from different communities and I used my critical reading to prove my argument after thorough investigations. In all I believe I have hit every area that pertains to this section, as I have shown my ability to critically read, the ability to gather many resources, and I have shown the ability to take the ideas from other communities and synthesize them.

Core Value 3. My work demonstrates that I rhetorically analyzed the purpose, audience, and contexts of my own writing and other texts and visual arguments.

I have achieved this goal this semester by always keeping my audience in mind when giving my argument, and a great way I made sure to do this was to explain to them like they have absolutely no information and they have no understanding whatsoever of the topic. I would also keep a goal to myself to make sure I was clear and precise with how I explained my arguments, and this can be said for my own visual argument where I was clear in rhetorically analyzing the purpose. By the end of this semester I believe with this assignment I have met the criteria asked of by providing a clear rhetorical analysis of my purpose, and audience.

Core Value 4: My work demonstrates that I have met the expectations of academic writing by locating, evaluating, and incorporating illustrations and evidence to support my own ideas and interpretations.

I have met this goal this semester by not only having a ton of resources, but within these sources I was able to take away a small chunk which would help me provide more evidence to support my topics. throughout these sources I was able to very easily as my topic was a famous debate. The evidence found in these sources I found would provide all different kinds of ways to take my ideas, which is how I would interpret each one of them and find how and if they can help me prove my claim. In the end, I was able to find an adequate amount of sources and use them to provide evidence and backgrounds into my claim which would help me come to a conclusion.

Core Value 5. My work demonstrates that I respect my ethical responsibility to represent complex ideas fairly and to the sources of my information with appropriate citation.

I have achieved this goal this semester by providing every source with proper citation and representing what the article’s message they are trying to send is. by using these sources they helped me think in different kinds of ways which helped me write each argument. When formating the citations I used the correct APA format we were taught in class. It’s important when citing sources that we don’t plagiarize as we are discrediting the authors work, which I was aware to not do, as I was able to comfortably analyze each source and use it how it fit. In the end I was able to gather my sources and cite the correct way without plagiarizing.

Visual Rewrite- Planefan25

Smoky Bear’s head appears in the center of the screen, behind him there is a lush green forest. While bears are normally depicted as dangerous animals Smoky is friendly and has small teeth.(During our meeting you said he had no teeth. This is wrong, if you look very closely you can see two very small bottom teeth.) The forest behind him is very real, and amazing fuel for a raging forest fire. He is talking, most likely introducing himself and starting off with a vague speech about fire safety. Professor Hodges compared him to Jesus emerging from the clouds. I see this, Mr. Bear is like the Jesus or protector of the forest and all its creatures.0:00

There is a man grilling in between the foreground and the background. He seems like he only has a little bit of experience with the grill, enough to get him started but it is crucial that he has help. The man seems happy. A prepared but unoccupied table sits in the foreground. Four cups and a small appetizer are on it. Both of these things imply there are other people with him. A few empty chairs are in the background. We are in a very fertile environment shown by the green bushes, grass, and trees. 0:03

Someone shorter than the man comes in. Maybe a child or short wife. It is confirmed there are other people. My guess is that it is his child. 0:04

They are running happily so they are probably a child playing. Seeing a child playing evokes emotions of joy and nostalgia. Older people want to return to that joy, so when confronted with a child playing they will sympathize with them. 0:04

There are actually two children playing. One boy and one girl. The boy looks slightly younger than the girl. The man seems happy so I imagine he is their father. It makes you feel happy for them. Appealing to pathos or a moral standpoint. 0:04

As the children run past the father looks down. Its a loving gaze, this really pushes the pathos element. They are a happy family, you want them to stay that way. 0:05

The frame switches to a smartphone on the table with Smoky Bear on the screen. Again it is just Mr. Bears disembodied head. He is still portrayed as a nice bear with small teeth and soft features. 0:09

The man and smoky talk while the children play in the background. They are probably talking about fire safety since the man is grilling which is a common fire hazard when done incorrectly. He is also grilling on grass and small flame coming off that grill could easily decimate the happy children and foliage behind him. 0:11

Smoky responds and the man picks up the phone. With a happy demeanor, instead of being reluctant to hear what Mr. Bear is saying. That seems obvious because the only way Mr. Bear would be able to take over a smartphone like that is by downloading an app. 0:14

Smoky and the man continue the conversation. Everything looks to be going well, there are no signs of panic. The wildfire prevention title instills panic, the entire time I was waiting for something horrible to happen. 0:18

The man looks down at the phone confused. Another person has entered the background near the children, maybe the wife or mother. The backdrop is so carefully curated to show you the beauty of nature. Greens, soft reds, sunlight, bushes, and flowers all things that are very flammable. Not to mention the other houses in view. This isn’t the only family that could be effected by this. All the happy families in this happy neighborhood are going to die if Mr. Bear cannot provide the father with accurate information about grilling safey.0:20

The mans face expresses a change in thought and smiles to Mr. Bear on his phone. Mr. Bear is similar a religious figure in this. An all knowing being you can summon at anytime to assist you in your life struggles, even if that life struggle is not knowing much about grill safety. 0:24

The camera pans out to show the people in the background and the man grilling. They seems to all be having fun so I assume the new character is the mother. This moment reminds you that this is what is at risk if the father didn’t have Mr. Bear on speed dial. The loving and happy family could die if proper fire protocol isn’t followed. Mr. Bear is their savior here. Truly Jesus coming down from the heavens to bless this family with the knowledge of grilling. 0:25

The man turns around and grabs the attention of the three people in the back. Probably to signal the food his is grilling is ready. All trouble was avoided, this family will now sit down and happily enjoy a meal together. Mr. Bear, the all-knowing being, saved the day. 0:25

This video appeals to pathos by showing imagery of the happy family, children playing and an overall pleasant emotional appeal. They want you to see this happy family and make you want to keep this family happy. Even if you have limited knowledge of the art of grilling you can still keep your family safe. Maybe you relate it to wanting to keep your own family safe, or you just empathize with the people in the video. They use your empathy and relatability to push their agenda. Along with the current issue of preserving nature, with climate change we hear more and more everyday about how wildfires are getting worse. This video was released after the horrible wildfires that were started by people unsafely using “pyrotechnic devices.” This is a real issue that Mr. Bear has dedicated his life to and even as a floating cartoon head he is able to complete his mission. Just the idea of Mr. Bear instills a fear of wildfires.

Self Reflective Statement

Core Value 1. My work demonstrates that I used a variety of social and interactive practices that involve recursive stages of exploration, discovery, conceptualization, and development.

I met this goal this semester by making thorough and substantial revisions to work I have submitted. I have been in constant communication with Professor Hodges over the course of this semester about how to better my work. This in itself is a social and interactive practice. I have explored and discovered many outside sources that have aided in developing my writing into the best that it can be and I have also bettered my skills in conceptualizing scholarly and dense texts that I have used as sources in my research analyses. Overall, looking at my work from the beginning of the semester until now, it shows clear and concise growth and development in all aspects. Writing is recursive and I believe that I have come close to mastering the practice of making constant revisions in order to make my work the best that it can be.

Core Value 2. My work demonstrates that I read critically, and that I placed texts into conversation with one another to create meaning by synthesizing ideas from various discourse communities.

I met this goal this semester by constantly using sources to provide my writing with better insight. I have read many articles and books with critical thinking and I have pulled ideas and facts from these texts and used them in my writing in the appropriate circumstances. In most examples of my writing I have compiled this semester, I have used a broad range of sources from many different communities. I have used these sources and synthesized specific ideas from them into my writing to better communicate my theses and claims I have made in various pieces I have written. Overall I believe that I have placed critical reading and writing of utmost importance this semester and I will continue to do so in every piece I write during my academic career.

Core Value 3. My work demonstrates that I rhetorically analyzed the purpose, audience, and contexts of my own writing and other texts and visual arguments.

I met this goal this semester by making it my goal to constantly consider my audience when I am writing and to always provide them with appropriate context. I also used rhetoric to analyze the purpose of my writings and to analyze visual arguments this semester as well. Before I began to write any piece, I always would analyze why I am tasked with writing this specific piece, who exactly is it that I am conveying this piece to, and what context will best provide my audience with the most compelling and concise information. I was  also provided with many examples of visual argument that proved most useful in bettering my skills as a writer and providing me with a fresh perspective of what it means to be a good writer.

Core Value 4: My work demonstrates that I have met the expectations of academic writing by locating, evaluating, and incorporating illustrations and evidence to support my own ideas and interpretations.

I met this goal this semester by always using specific evidence from an array of sources, both scholarly and other articles, to support any and all claims I have made in my writing thus far. The evidence I have used to support claims made in my writing have been both for and against claims I have made. I believe it is important to use all of the facts surrounding a claim whether they support your interpretation of said claim or not. Using contrasting evidence and sources has helped me better understand a wide variety of perspectives, especially when writing an argumentative essay. Overall, it is extremely important and necessary to use evidence to support ideas in writing to avoid any type of misinterpretation of the work provided.

Core Value 5. My work demonstrates that I respect my ethical responsibility to represent complex ideas fairly and to the sources of my information with appropriate citation.

I met this goal this semester by continuing to cite every source I have pulled facts and information from in my writing. I believe that properly citing sources is of extreme necessity and importance to avoid plagiarism and academic dishonesty. Using a variety of sources in my writing has helped me to express complex ideas and claims I have made with facts to uphold them. The sources I have used in my writing have also provided my ideas and claims with fair representation and portrayal. I also have learned how to cite sources properly in the APA format and I have learned how to properly cite sources inside the text I am writing as well.

Rebuttal Rewrite—PlaneFan

Innovation is Not Worth it

Human lives are more important than money. Most would say this, but when it comes to aviation there seems to be a disconnect to the rest of society. It takes a lot of money to build a plane that meets our expectations, a plane that blows us out of this world is going to be costly to the extreme. People seem to think death is a natural consequence of innovation. When in reality it doesn’t have to be if planes are built to either reach

Venture capitalists are calling death a natural consequence of innovation. They compare a human life to their monetary value when discussing the risks. They say that the way the government puts value on human life is too high. Right now the value of life statistic(VSL) is $12.5 million dollars, it’s supposed to be the average amount of money an American makes in their life. The opposition claims that this is too high because as the Federal Aviation Administration calculates the possible amount of money lost if a plane crashes the number becomes extraordinarily high causing the FAA to pass regulation even if just one plane is saved.  They say this price encourages the FAA to enact laws that contain insanely hard to reach goals and that it’s halting innovation. From their perspective the risk of death isn’t worth the high cost of investing. They compare aviation regulation to the regulation controlling cars being extremely loose.

First of all innovation doesn’t have to be deadly, at all. The Airbus A380 has the highest passenger capacity we’ve ever seen. Yet it still has no fatalities associated with it. We still haven’t been able to fully utilize the aircraft. Only major international airports with long runways and large enough fuel networks can handle it. There is no reason to develop larger aircrafts because we have a large aircraft we just don’t use it. Other areas of innovation like speed and fuel efficiency are different. But we had planes like the Concorde that ended up being phased out due to noise pollution, fuel efficiency, and costs. It had one major crash caused by debris on the runway, not even caused by mechanical failure, and it was abandoned. The article argues that we encourage manufacturers to just re-release previous versions. Yes, we do but for a good reason. We know that the fundamental mechanics of that aircraft work safely so why change it? Improving the Concorde or A380 is safer because they haven’t failed us. Starting over would only lead to more costs, testing, regulation and death. No one is arguing against improvements, we are arguing against innovation for the sake of being new, not improving.

Putting a human life to a monetary value is necessary but it shouldn’t be the only factor. Each human life is important, everybody deserves a chance to go about life without the fear of dying. While it is important when discussing the economy we can’t separate the idea that a human’s life doesn’t deserve to be cut short for innovation, especially passengers who are unaware. We live in a world run by money and we are building machines that take a lot of labor. The expectation that it will be easy or cheap is unrealistic. Lowering expectations isn’t going to make building good planes easier, it’s going to make building bad planes easier. The consequences of valuing life lower than it already is could be detrimental to society. A person is a person with their own life experiences, family, job and goals no matter if you are in their life or not. We can’t separate that even in scenarios where logic is the main component.

Comparing aviation to cars is unfair and disrespectful, planes were developed to be amazing feats of engineering. Taking that and saying we should treat plane regulation like we treat our regulation on cars taints the reputation we have built. We have idolized airplanes as a society for years, when the Boeing 747 was first released in the 1970s she was crowned “The Queen of the Skies.” Seeing a 747 was a major event, she sparked a joy in people with her size and luxurious design. Airplanes aren’t supposed to be mediocre, they have to symbolize the hard work put into creating them.

Our safety record with aviation is one to uphold. Planes carry so many more people in one trip so when they fail it is so much more devastating. We can’t treat them like a car that only carries about four people. Behind the wheel you are also in control of your vehicle or you trust the person who is. But when you get on a plane you have never met the pilot. Despite this you know that they have gone through years of training to be in the position they are in. Almost anyone could go out and drive a car. Most people could easily get a license. Even if you are the best driver there is still an enormous chance you could be in a car accident. We have reasons to be so strict on planes, especially commercial, we have set a safety record that people trust in. Without that trust commercial aviation is nothing.

So no we should not encourage the government to ease up on policies slowing down innovation. There is way too much risk associated with doing so and lowering the cost of a human life to fit investors standards is dangerous. No one expects that they will be on the next plane that crashes, because it happens so little, we need to keep it that way. Opening the door for sketchy companies to make the planes we need to keep us safe is a recipe for disaster.

Innovation is beautiful when done properly it changes the world. It is extremely counter intuitive to slow innovation because it’s important, but only when it’s a true improvement. As of now we haven’t improved the simple technologies and behaviors that make innovation possible. Eventually we will reach a point where our pilots have more training, our policy is enforced and our current technology is fixed but those things have to happen for any innovation to be an improvement.

Reflective – TheFrogSprog

Core Value 1. My work demonstrates that I used a variety of social and interactive practices that involve recursive stages of exploration, discovery, conceptualization, and development.

I used the Proposal+5 and what would later become my Annotated Bibliography to have a place to place the wide variety of sources I used in my papers as well as the ones that I feel left a large impact on my thought process and writings but found no place for in my papers to specifically use. The way that I used the bibliography to compile and file the expanse of citations that I felt could be a great aid in my time in this course. The development of my paper can very easily be seen through how my sources started to become more and more honed and focused on specific ideas as you get towards the end.

Core Value 2. My work demonstrates that I read critically, and that I placed texts into conversation with one another to create meaning by synthesizing ideas from various discourse communities.

I met this synthesis of sources in my Rebuttal through the arguments my sources had engaged in. The way in which I had the studies of Markey and Ferguson interact with one another is the pinnacle of my synthesis. The direct difference between the two sources where Markey claims that video games have caused a spike in violent crime while Ferguson shows the direct opposite where he proves that there has been a steady decline in crime over the decades of video games becoming more and more prominent.

Core Value 3. My work demonstrates that I rhetorically analyzed the purpose, audience, and contexts of my own writing and other texts and visual arguments.

For my Visual Rhetoric assignment, I had to watch a 30 second video on YouTube while it was muted. In this assignment, my task was to analyze what was being presented to me one frame at a time and hypothesize why the director was choosing to show me each and every frame that was presented to me. I was able to find what the purpose is, and who the audience is, and with further revision, I think I can get my point across better in my writings after the advice I was given by Professor Hodges.

Core Value 4: My work demonstrates that I have met the expectations of academic writing by locating, evaluating, and incorporating illustrations and evidence to support my own ideas and interpretations.

I feel that my Definition paper is a great demonstration of this core value as the evaluation and incorporation of the “Offline Aggression” definition I feel was a major player in my definition and Research papers as a whole. I used Aboujadou’s paper and how I used his definition of “offline aggression” and expanded it to further my goal and interpret the meaning of “online aggression” based upon his use of “offline aggression.”

Core Value 5. My work demonstrates that I respect my ethical responsibility to represent complex ideas fairly and to the sources of my information with appropriate citation.

In my Research Paper, I feel that I meet this ethical responsibility towards properly citing my sources as the paper is the culmination of my semester’s work. It is my duty as a student to do my due diligence and make sure that I properly cite my sources in text as well as including all of the sources I cite in the References section.

This research paper discusses the mental impacts of art therapy on a person’s well being. The hypothesis being presented is that art therapy helps with expressing one’s emotions, as well as dealing with troubled adolescents in helping them address their feelings. Most research discusses the basics to art therapy, and its benefits and what will solve it. But it goes way deeper than basic expression, which is why my proposal will discuss how art therapy helps people become good at problem solving and developing new reward pathways in the brain, improving one’s mentality. Overall, it shows how easily applicable art therapy is to adolescents in contrast to other therapies.

Drass, Jessica Anne Masino, “Using art to teach problem-solving and other social skills: the effectiveness of the RATE Program” (2009). Theses and Dissertations.

Background: A program was conducted where a group of troubled south jersey teens were implemented into an after school program. This program used art therapy and an alternate form of expression which created a positive impact amongst the group.

How I used this: Help me see the methodology behind how to reach adolescents who are troubled through art therapy. It is written by a Rowan University colleague and is discussing programs we could improve upon on campus with the psychological background provided. You see a real life example being used in this article.

Berberian, Marygrace. (2019). Creative Problem Solving in Art Therapy.

Background: This article discusses the psychology behind art therapy. This is broken down into which parts of the activities and components, and how they apply towards progress in therapy. It goes through mental pathways and how different parts of the adolescent brain are touched through these different practices.

How I used this: A new impact I have not researched yet has been brought up in this article I found interesting and it is art therapies impact on resilience. This is a new quality that I believe coincides with the others I was researching and offers a new perspective. I liked being able to analyze this source, as I only had so many words, I had to debate between a few quotes and used process of elimination to be able to see which makes it into my argument. I got good at picking which sources fit better than others and deciding what fits best with my paper.

  1.  https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/8136

Su, Fei-Ya, “How Can Students Use Art to Learn Problem Solving?” (2020). Theses and Dissertations.

Background: The angle being brought up in this research paper is more expressing the teacher’s side of art. We see the impacts and focusing on the students, but this article brings into light how the art teachers see it from their end. On top of this the quality of the art teacher curriculum and the value art class holds is a very strongly led theme throughout this text.

How I used this: Looking at art therapy from a teacher’s perspective is a different view than a professional therapist. Looking at how two different fields value art therapy tactics highlights its applicability. Seeing a educators perspective is different from a therapist, or a doctor/researcher. I believe looking at multiple opinions allows for an audience to feel more easily convinced.

Background: This source is a research study conducted on children who displayed psychosocial problems and how the application of art therapy impacted them. I believe this is a useful source as it gives experimental and scientific background while still overseeing studies that range within the adolescent age group.

How I used this: This experiment is much more extensive, as well as much more professional. I was able to use this research that was done to help prove one of my points on the benefits. While a lot of the content was very difficult for a general audience to understand, the contents and summaries were very helpful and the amount of work provided in this research made it very easy to pull a good quote or example for the audience. It also helped me, because it helped me analyze and understand parts of an advanced text.

Zielinska, E. (2020, June 23). Art in times of crisis. The Nexus.

Background: While analyzing and extracting different scenarios, this article walks through different cases where art therapy could be applicable. In solving issues or facing crisis, there are multiple forms which art therapy can be applied to which are highlighted in this article.

How I used this:I believe this source is just fitting with the topic of application of art therapy towards problem solving. This article does discuss the reward pathways and the achievements of using art therapy. The language they use in this article is also easy to interpret and has many credible sources. The more I looked through this article, it provided a general baseline along my ideas, this source acted as something general for me to fall back onto. I took quotes from here which allowed for me to formulate the general idea around my topic

Background:This article acts as a review of how art therapy is applied towards non-psychotic disorders. This texts is an compilation of evidence and rebuttals that contrast one another about art therapy. There are examples provided along with controlled experiments. This is a compilation of data and analyzations of experiments conducted thought the authors work.

How I used this:I was able to help solidify my point where art therapy is highly effective and I got to look at it from a different point where factors such as cost and things such as the job field, this helped me add more onto my claim and help provide more studies where art therapy was proven effective.I used the models he provided and was able to break down different tactics into my paper.

7. Kristin Aquilino- Personal Interview

Background: My mom is an educator, and deals with many behavior issues from children grades K-5. I have seen firsthand how many therapy tactics and different curriculums have been implemented into her classroom since I had her as a teacher. She implements new arts and crafts therapy tactics in her classroom, as she has begun to see a spike in behavioral problem in the classroom.

How I used this: I decided that she was a good first hand source , and that a-lot could be learned from someone who knows how to manage and work with children firsthand. She actually had many stories and scenarios as to how it would work on her students, and how not only did it calm them down, but helped her as an educator. Being able to implement real life stories and experiences, from someone related to myself, the author of the piece, may help my audience see how vastly people can be seen using and being impacted by these tactics, and help further prove my point towards its applicability.

Core Value 1. My work demonstrates that I used a variety of social and interactive practices that involve recursive stages of exploration, discovery, conceptualization, and development.

While searching the internet, specifically through Google Scholar, I could practice the recursive stages of exploration, discovery, conceptualization, and development. I did this by looking through articles and seeing if they were valid and would help support me in my essay to prove my claims. I could use different research techniques, like specific words or phrases, to find the most valuable articles. While making my Annotated bibliography, it was most helpful to have these skills.

Core Value 2. My work demonstrates that I read critically, and that I placed texts into conversation with one another to create meaning by synthesizing ideas from various discourse communities.

While working on my Definition Essay, I demonstrated how to read critically through the many articles I had to go through to find the more valuable information for my essay. I also used people like my mom to understand my topic better because she worked as a healthcare broker. By not only using the internet but also someone who deals with healthcare every day, I could fully grasp my topic of healthcare and understand it from a different perspective.

Core Value 3. My work demonstrates that I rhetorically analyzed the purpose, audience, and contexts of my own writing and other texts and visual arguments.

While writing my Visual Rhetoric, I learned how to analyze the purpose, audience, and context rhetorically. I could understand how to write something for the audience to see what I was writing about and explain the many different aspects of the video I was writing about to make sure the audience understood.

Core Value 4: My work demonstrates that I have met the expectations of academic writing by locating, evaluating, and incorporating illustrations and evidence to support my own ideas and interpretations.

While writing my Rebuttal Essay, I found strong evidence to back my claims while using strong articles that went against my claim. I could locate, evaluate, and incorporate illustrations that supported my claims to help me better prove my claim in my essay.

Core Value 5. My work demonstrates that I respect my ethical responsibility to represent complex ideas fairly and to the sources of my information with appropriate citation.

My Proposal +5 represented my ethical responsibility to represent complex ideas fairly. I could find sources I found value in for my essay and then show how I would use them in my essay in a beneficial way. I also worked on my citations for each of my articles in the correct way.

Bibliography – TheFrogSprog

Proposal:

For my research essay, I will examine how video games can be used to reduce real-world violence and be of therapeutic use. People generally feel that video games are the root cause of many issues. While video games are present in the homes of many people who have committed violent actions, they are not the cause. Politics have done many negative things to video games, with the fearmongering that occurs over the news. My sources, however, show that video games have a positive influence on many different people. From the ways that these studies can help people with incurable illnesses to help people connect with themselves and others around them better,

Sources:

  1. Full article: Video games as a complementary therapy tool in mental disorders: PlayMancer, a European multicentre study (tandfonline.com)

Background: Video games are a great aid in schizophrenic treatments. PlayMancer is a European Union initiative that is used to treat specific mental ailments, A specific game developed by PlayMancer, this game is made up of many different mini-games that have been specifically designed for the different ailments and their studies.

How I could use this: This source can be used to help show how video game research has been slowly coming towards showing how video games are a great way to help people. The therapeutic nature of video games can be used to aid in simple and smaller measures of mental health.

  1. Video Games: Dispelling myths and tabloid headlines that videogames are bad – CORE Reader

Background: A Gamer is defined as someone who plays games, whatever way people play games no matter what. This source specifically highlights the social aspect that many games have through things like MMOs and other types of online games in general.

How I could use this: I could have used this source to show how the social aspect of video games can be used to help bring people together. The findings of many people report having better friendships online than the ones that they have made in real life and interact with daily. The long-lasting nature of online friendships that many people experience and tell of is on the same level as those who report having long-lasting childhood friendships.

  1. Blazing Angels or Resident Evil? Can Violent Video Games be a Force for Good? – Christopher J. Ferguson, 2010 (rowan.edu)

Background: Violent video games have been around since the 1970s, while the violence has fluctuated to various degrees. The presence of violence in games has always been a major concern for people and politicians. These concerns stem from the general concern of violent media that has always been present and evolved from comics, movies, and TV.

How I used this: The state of research in video game violence is a wild land of the found conclusions. Each study has shown different results, and things like gender control and such can show how the brain stimuli of people vary wildly. The found aggression of people who play games has also been found multiple times to be lower than those who consume violent TV. I used this source to help disprove multiple studies by my opposition in my rebuttal and research paper.

  1. The Effects of Video Games on Cognition and Brain Structure: Potential Implications for Neuropsychiatric Disorders | SpringerLink (rowan.edu)

Background: This source details the different studies done to see how video games can be of therapeutic use. It has been shown that autistic children have many different benefits like facial memory, response to stimuli, and learning. Video games have a vast use in clinical studies, and they have been shown to change brain structures like how Super Mario 64 affects participants’ gray matter.

How I could use this: I will use this source to show how video games can be of therapeutic use. The detailing of how VR games can help people with mental disabilities and brain damage is one of the ways that video games can help people.

  1. Virtual Reality in Psychological, Medical and Pedagogical Applications – Google Books

Background: Virtual Reality games are great in aiding health in general. Studies have also shown that games can help with the acceptance of mental awareness. VR games are a great way to study rises and falls in aggressive behavior due to the more personal nature that virtual reality possesses in comparison to regular video games.

How I could use this: I can use this source to show how VR games can promote general health in people. The lack of causation between mental illness and video games has been proven. While many people with mental issues have been shown to play games, there is zero proof that these games have caused the illness.

  1. When and How Video Games Can Be Good: A Review of the Positive Effects of Video Games on Well-Being – Yemaya J. Halbrook, Aisling T. O’Donnell, Rachel M. Msetfi, 2019 (rowan.edu)

Background: The source details a study into how video games can have a positive effect on people and their mindsets. While many studies have found negative effects on well-being, they often do not have a control game to offset the negative effects. This study uses two different games to test the effects of games and their positive effects. Tetris was used to show that there are positive effects.

How I used this: I used this source to help define the healthy play and use of video games. The healthy use vs the unhealthy use is very clearly defined through moderation and obsession. This source I utilized this in both my Causal Argument and my Research paper, and I think that this source was a great way to help illustrate the differences between the two extremes of play.

  1. Understanding the lives of problem gamers: The meaning, purpose, and influences of video gaming – ScienceDirect

Background: The different themes and subdivisions of video games and how people use them as a pastime are delved into. From the two large categories of Gaming as meaningful and purposeful to Push and pull influences on the amount of gaming. These two broad categories and their subcategories which I won’t get into boil into the Meaningful and purposeful gamers as being healthily integrated into their lives, having a purposeful connection like relaxation, and experiencing a culture of people with similar interests. Push and pull influences are over how their personal lives interact with their gaming, how they interact with those around them, and how they interact with things outside of their control.

How I used this: I used this source similarly to the last source to help prove the poor effects that people feel when using video games as a coping mechanism for their problems. While some people’s issues and problems aren’t as bad as others it is not good no matter what for one to use something as the sole outlet for their problems.

  1. JMIR Serious Games – Gaming Your Mental Health: A Narrative Review on Mitigating Symptoms of Depression and Anxiety Using Commercial Video Games

Background: Gaming can be used as a supplemental source of helping depression. The large downward spiral of mental health during COVID was felt by about 44% of the male population according to the study. The study found that certain game genres like RPGs were a good way to help depressive episodes through healthy online interactions with people who also play whatever RPG is chosen.

How I used this: I used this source in both my causal and research paper and I used it to show how games can be used to help aid in helping depression as long as it is not used as the sole coping mechanism. While different genres of games help in different manners and ways those with online interactions can help people through what their facing.

  1. The Impact of Video Games on the Players Behaviors: A Survey – ScienceDirect

Background: The impact of video games on players socially, educationally, and entertainment-wise are all spoken of and broached upon. The effects of different levels of aggression and how they affect different mental functions and abilities are shown to vary. Multiple different collection methods of player behavioral data are taken to accurately measure how the content is affecting the player. Different players are affected by different levels of aggression.

How I used this: In both my Causal and Research papers his source I used this to show that while aggressive people can be affected by aggression present in games, it is not the games that cause aggressive people to act in this manner. The quote “that comes through playing a specific video game varies from player to player depending on how the content of the video game is displayed and interpreted to the player’s mind.”  indicates how different mindsets can be affected by games as a whole. It is not just aggressive people being affected by aggression but it can be related to people who like puzzles being affected by large amounts of Tetris.

  1. Video Game Violence Use Among “Vulnerable” Populations: The Impact of Violent Games on Delinquency and Bullying Among Children with Clinically Elevated Depression or Attention Deficit Symptoms | Journal of Youth and Adolescence (rowan.edu)

Background: The importance of finding accurate measurements of aggression in children and the link towards video games. Monitoring children with mental disabilities and their relationship with video games is important because of the higher risk they pose of being affected by aggressive stimulants present in certain video games.

How I could use this: I could use this source to show that while people with mental issues are often the source of violent actions linked to video games this is not always the case. It is important to show how those with disabilities are vulnerable to what happens but only a small percentage go on to commit horrible crimes.

  1. ProQuest Ebook Central – Reader Mental Health in the Digital Age

Background: This study is on the different levels of aggressive content and how people are affected by these levels. The research goes in-depth on how aggression can be defined and in which ways different people engage in what many would consider to be aggressive behavior

How I used this: The definition of aggression is an important distinction in my paper as aggression is defined as nonconsensual acts of violence towards another. So children engaging in a game involving rough housing are not engaging in aggressive behavior. This is very important to distinguish between because to many people any type of aggressive behavior is automatically assumed to be a negative because of games. This study goes on to show that there is little to no difference between how people are affected by different types of aggression in media.

  1. Consequences of Play: A Systematic Review of the Effects of Online Gaming | International Journal of Mental Health and Addiction (springer.com)

Background: How players are affected by different genres of games like MMORPGs and VR games are looked into because of the influx of issues seen in the news. The study, however, finds that MMORPGs often have a positive effect on gamers and their social interactions due to the collaborative nature of the world. The consequences of gaming in general are also looked into and the study found that only those who are engaging in problematic play and use are truly negatively affected.

How I used this: I used this piece in both my rebuttal and my research paper to show how my opposition has the negative effects of video games misconstrued in the public eye. The second quote I used from this source shows how people expected that Virtual Reality games would have the highest rate of affecting players’ aggression when in reality these games had zero effect on their mental state whatsoever.

  1. Violent video games and real-world violence: Rhetoric versus data. (apa.org)

Background: The nature of how players have been affected through aggressive content and the exploitatively bombastic approach the media takes in linking these small and benign behaviors to horrendous incidents that are the sole fault of video games are looked into. The correlational data between violent game releases and minor spikes in particularly violent crimes are noted.

How I used this: I used this source to show the statistical fall in crime rates since the general debut of video games. While the source does try to link different horrific crimes to the release of video games I used a different source to actively disprove it and my opposition. The supposition of linking violent crimes to video games is purely speculative especially because of the noted fall in crime rates.

  1. Does Playing Violent Video Games Induce Aggression? Empirical Evidence of a Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging Study: Media Psychology: Vol 8, No 1 (tandfonline.com)

Background: The study attempts to prove how aggressive games can suppress different areas of the brain overtaking areas such as the amygdala and the anterior cingulate cortex. The study of players in different phases of play in one game is used to show these different manners in which they suppose the brain will react to stimuli.

How I used this: I used this source in my rebuttal to show how the process of studying how aggressive and nonaggressive stimulants affect players. The source states how they used only one game to show the difference between aggression and nonaggressive behaviors. I used this to illustrate the flaws in some studies in the lack of a control group to show how different games entirely affect behaviors as calm segments of otherwise aggressive games will still leave remnants of aggression in players.

  1. Violent Video Games, Delinquency, and Youth Violence: New Evidence – Matt DeLisi, Michael G. Vaughn, Douglas A. Gentile, Craig A. Anderson, Jeffrey J. Shook, 2013 (sagepub.com)

Background: The study outlines how media violence is a major risk factor for a rise in aggression and youth violence. The study follows incarcerated juveniles and separates them by gender. Different studies don’t usually cover the female side of aggression so the study uses a different spin on the same level of study that every researcher has done.

How I used this: I used this essay in my rebuttal to further illustrate how flawed studies are looked at. The quote I used from the article is the researchers stating that they are testing incarcerated teenagers to see how video games affect them. This is not a good practice to test levels of aggression as these compromised individuals have been found to already possess levels of aggression that the average person doesn’t have.
