Captive vs. Wild Orcas

P.1. Imagine living your whole life without your family in a tiny area where you are forced to perform tricks for an audience. That is the life of the orcas at SeaWorld. Orcas, also known as killer whales, are large black and white whales and are the largest members of the dolphin family. There are many differences between captive and wild orcas. For example, captive orcas at SeaWorld live shorter lives than orcas living free in the wild. Another example would be that orcas at SeaWorld are fed dead fish, while wild orcas can hunt their own food and have a variety. Captive orcas also suffer from physical injuries, depression, and psychosis due to their lives in confinement. In order to really see how poorly captive whales are treated they have to be compared to the wild orcas who are out living freely and healthy.

P.2. SeaWorld has been providing false information about their whales for decades. One of the biggest lies they talk about is the lifespan of the captive whales compared to the lifespan of the free whales. They claim on their website that no one knows the exact life span of wild orcas but then they go on to say that SeaWorld’s whales live just as long as the wild orcas. On the lifespan of killer whales page on their website they say that “female killer whales live around 30 to 50 years and males live around 19 to 30 years.” The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says, “males typically live for about 30 years, but can live as long as 50-60 years; females typically live about 50 years, but can live as long as 100 years.” SeaWorld is providing younger ages on their page because those are the typical lifespans of their whales held in captivity. Also less than two years ago a 103 year old female orca was spotted off the coast of Washington, which made SeaWorld’s lie look a lot worse. These whales being kept in captivity don’t live nearly as long as the whales living out free in the wild and the research is there to prove it.

P.3 Orcas are known as killer whales for a reason. This reason is because they hunt and kill other large sea animals for food. A wild orcas diet usually consists of a variety of fish and sea mammals such as seals, small whales and sometimes sharks. Their diet can range from fish to seabirds to sea turtles and they normally eat whatever animal they can find. The orcas sometimes work together to successfully hunt these animals and they come up with strategies to trap the prey that they are hunting. On the other hand, the captive whales held at SeaWorld are only fed thawed fish and they can’t eat whenever they please. In the article, “Food Deprivation Is Alive and Well at SeaWorld” by Elizabeth Batt, she talks about former SeaWorld trainer John Hargrove’s book called Beneath the Surface. When explaining how the orcas ate at SeaWorld, ” Hargrove’s point wasn’t that SeaWorld starved the whales, it was that food withholding was used as a motivator to keep them hungry enough to want to perform in shows for fish rewards.” They are only motivated to cooperate to the commands because they are so hungry and they know if they cooperate they will get food. If they are not cooperating during the shows their amount of fish given per day is also decreased in order to get them to perform well. In addition, in the article, “SeaWorld Says ‘The Facts Are On Our Side.’ Let’s Look At The ‘Facts.'” a former trainer claims that orcas were starved before visits from celebrities or VIP guests so that they would perform well. SeaWorld has denied using food deprivation to make its orcas perform but it is clearly true that they do. Captive orcas will never be able to hunt and they won’t be eating anything other than a small amount of fish for the rest of their lives.

P.4 Orcas that live out in the wild travel around 100 miles per day and they always travel with other whales, usually their pods, or family members. They have strong bonds with each other out in the wild. They are able to swim freely and go as deep or as far as they feel like. Orcas in captivity are kept in shallow tiny pools resulting in them having to swim in the same circle all day long. They are also alone in these tanks or sometimes when they are with other orcas that they are not compatible with they fight each other which results in injuries and sometimes even death. If fights do occur there isn’t much that can be done considering the fact that the whales can’t just swim away or hide since they are in the tiny pool. Orcas in the wild live in distinct units called ecotypes and each one is very different from another. They would never interact out in the wild being that they are all from different parts of the world. But at SeaWorld their ecotype isn’t taken into consideration, causing two whales of different ecotypes to be forced to interact with each other which causes problems such as fighting. In 1989 there was an indecent during  a live show where one orca rammed the other causing it to bleed to death due to a torn artery. These orcas were from two distinct ecotypes and were placed into the same pool which resulted in a tragic loss. In the article “Why Killer Whales Should Not Be Kept in Captivity” by Melissa Hogenboom, she says that “different ecotypes do not associate with each other in the wild, so it can be problematic if they are suddenly forced together.” It is not right to put two animals together in a small tank and expect them to get along when they are very different from each other and not familiar with interacting with one another.

P.5 One of the major physical differences between wild and captive whales is the dorsal fin. The dorsal fin of a captive orca is almost always collapsed, usually more often in males. On the physical characteristics of orcas page on SeaWorld’s website they state “However, as killer whales at SeaWorld tend to spend more time at the surface working with their trainers, and many of the males have slumped or bent dorsal fins, it seems probable that time spent at the surface may be a contributing factor.” This shows that SeaWorld is admitting to the fact that being kept in these shallow pools causes their dorsal fins to collapse. But, by blaming the dorsal fin collapse on the shallow-pool lifestyle of captive whales, SeaWorld is ignoring the other explanations: that depression, lack of exercise, and isolation from their ecotype familiars are causing a profound physical manifestation of the animals’ suffering. They are using this explanation as an excuse to hide all these other reasons that their dorsal fins collapse. Whales in the wild can travel fast and far and are able to swim at very deep measures unlike the captive whales so their dorsal fins are straight and tall. They do not have the stress or depression that captive orcas have and they can swim freely in their ecotypes to get the exercise they need.

P.6. Lastly, these captive whales suffer psychological trauma such as madness and severe stress. Many of the orcas at SeaWorld have broken teeth from biting on the steel gates from stress causing severe dental problems and painful holes having to be drilled. There is only one known death of a wild orca killing a human, but there are four deaths and over a dozen severe injuries from whales in captivity. In one of the cases with the wild orca it initially identified the human as prey and then ceased when they realized it was a mistake. But for the whales at SeaWorld it was not a mistake. It is said that these attacks were due to stress, frustration, and lots of aggression built up over time. All of these attacks from the captive whales were at SeaWorld and they never would have occurred if these whales were living free like the rest of the orca population, considering the fact that they do not hunt humans.

P.7. Overall, the differences between free whales and captive whales is astonishing and these differences show how different their lives really are. These differences also show SeaWorld’s lies to the public on topics such as treatment of their orcas, their life expectancy, and their health. Orcas belong out in the wild and they should not have to suffer for the entertainment purposes of a company.

When you have a broken leg you’re given a cast. When you have an ear infection you’re given a pill. No one questions it, no one says that you’ll get over it without the help of the medication you’ve been provided with. So why is that any different from mental illness? “It’s all in your head!” Yes, that’s right, it’s all in the head. In patients with depression, there is a lack of serotonin, “a natural substance in the brain that helps in the brain that helps maintain mental balance” in a person and many medications such as, Fluoxetine or more commonly known as Prozac, increases the amount of serotonin that helps keep moods under control. Though the medication is still just as effective as, say a medication to cure period cramps such as Midol, it does take a while to kick in because a neuro sickness is much more intense and since it’s located in the brain, it could take the brain longer to adjust to the new way thoughts are being processed.

The stigma surrounding mental illness and medication stands in the way of proper mental health care. People without mental illness, those who support the stigma, are those who tell the mentally ill that it’s all in their head and that they are going to get over it eventually. Would you say the same thing to someone with diabetes? Most likely not because diabetes is a serious disease. “But it can be medically proven!” Yes, and so can mental disorders. According to Natasha Tracy in Biological Evidence for Depression – Mental Illness Exists, it is proven consistently that genetic factors are the reason for 30%-40% of cases of Major Depressive Disorder. Meanwhile the other 60%-70% is due to stressors in life. There’s also a hormone called cortisol that is linked to stress. Normally, once the stress has passed the cortisol decreases, though for those suffering from depression, their cortisol levels remain permanently elevated. This hormone can be measured in saliva. It repeatedly proves to be a major source of Major Depressive Disorder.

It has been known for people to compare mental illness to a physical injury when the stigma is presented. Stigma holders say things such as, “A broken leg shows up on an x-ray! Depression doesn’t!” Actually, yes it does. Neuroimaging of Depression proves that “structural abnormalities and decreased brain volumes have consistently been found in several areas of the brain of those with MDD (Major Depressive Disorder). Though brain volumes in patients with untreated depression shrinks with length of the illness, the loss cannot be explained. It can be stopped or reversed with treatment. Even though these brain abnormalities found in neuroimaging can decrease, that doesn’t mean that the patient is cured. A group of neurotransmitters called Monoamines have been studied and its counterparts (Serotonin, Dopamine, and Noradrenaline) have proven to increase the concentration of monoamines and been found to have antidepressant effects. Although there is research that supports the claim that dopamine levels are always low in depressive individuals. However, there are new antidepressants which are promising in “hard-to-treat depression.”

Let’s get technical here. What are antidepressants exactly? They are a medication used to treat depression, obviously. However, they are also used to treat anxiety, pain, insomnia, and, though not FDA-approved, they are used to treat ADHD in some adults. Everyone can respond differently to the medication, so testing out different ones is what some people do before finding the right medication that doesn’t make them want to die. These reasons aren’t known yet. Then as for other disorders they have their own medications. Anti-anxiety medications help with symptoms such as panic attacks and extreme fear or worry, and are commonly known as benzodiazepines. They’re known as secondary treatments when, in the case of panic attacks or social anxiety disorder, SSRIs and antidepressants come first to them. Next is stimulants to increase alertness, attention, and energy, as well as increasing blood pressure, heart rate, and respiration, mostly prescribed to treat patients diagnosed with ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder). More heavily advanced drugs are the antipsychotics, mainly used to treat psychosis, loss of touch with reality, hallucinations, or delusions. They can be used to treat schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, psychotic depression, and can be combined with other medications to treat delirium, dementia, ADHD, severe depression, eating disorders, PTSD, OCD, and generalized anxiety disorder. And finally we have mood stabilizers to treat bipolar disorder and mood swings associated with other disorders. One stabilizer, lithium, is approved to treat mania, and studies have shown for lithium to have anti-suicide benefits. They can also healthily treat depression, schizoaffective disorder, disorders of impulse control, and certain childhood mental illnesses. As you can see, there is a lot of eclectic medication used to treat mental disorders, most of which are proven to be extremely effective.

Medication in mental illnesses can mean so much more than just medicine to stop the sadness, or the voices, or the panic, etc. It’s something necessary for those mentally ill people to get through their days. Without their medication, it can be hard for some of those to get out of bed in the morning, not to mention getting in their car and driving to school and/or work. Years without medication can lead to self-harm, damaging thoughts, suicidal thoughts, and the destruction of relationships with others. Medication can also be therapy. A specific disorder, Borderline Personality Disorder, can only be treated by DBT, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, therapy since no medication has been discovered yet. Medication also means drugs. Not drugs like mushrooms, but marijuana is a great medication for anxious and depressive patients. But unfortunately people hear the word “medication” and their mind goes to “drugs” which, because of stigma, leads to negative thoughts about the person taking the medication. That’s not true though, because the definition of a drug is “a medicine or other substance which has a physiological effect when ingested or otherwise introduced to the body. The stigma against drugs is that they are all awful and should be avoided at all costs. This is really only to drugs like mushrooms, heroin, acid, etc. Further on, this disproves that medication is a bad thing, and proves that it can be helpful to those who need it, who desperately need it.

We tend to think of gerrymandering as a problem that can only be solved in courts by politicians, but using geometry as way to combat it is an innovative possible solution. It’s easy to wonder how gerrymandering—the practice of carving of districts to create an advantage for a political party—can be solved by mathematics. Moon Duchin, an associate math professor and director of Science, Technology, and Society program at Tufts University, claims she has the answer. She discovered that her previous research on metric geometry could actually be applied to gerrymandering, a subject that has only been thought of to be solved by politics.

Gerrymandering is the practice of manipulating the shape of electoral district to benefit a specific party. At Tufts University, a professor has made a proposal to reduce it. Moon Duchin is a professor, and she noticed that a bit of her research about metric geometry could relate to gerrymandering. She felt that the best way she could do this was to train new witnesses who know the mathematical concepts applicable to gerrymandering well. She created a program at Tufts to train mathematicians to do so. She has partnered with the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law and hopes for people to keep signing up for this program.

My vote matters more than yours. Gerrymandering is alive and well in America and it is undermining the foundation of our democracy. Gerrymandering is a way of drawing voting districts that results in an unfair and unrealistic representation of the public. Luckily, a math professor is using geometry to put a stop to this practice. She has found that her research in metric geometry has a practical application to stopping gerrymandering. She believes that training witnesses that are experienced math can help end gerrymandering by testifying in court.

At first glance it seems unreasonable to put mathematic experts in courts but recent studies have shown that there is a link between metric geometry and gerrymandering.

Tufts university professor, Moon Duchin is tackling the inefficient process of gerrymandering. The undemocratic process, which gives the advantage to the minority party has long been discussed. The Supreme court has tackled the problem, stating that defining  “compactness” is where the problem lies. This is where Duchin comes in. A mathematician,Duchin is gathering fellow mathematicians to define compactness, and create a mathematical answer the the problem of gerrymandering. A geometrical answer is the answer to the problem that has plagued the Supreme Court, and make the voting process more democratic.

Now, becoming an issue, it is found that metric geometry research can be used to help the problems the courts have been presented with. Mathematicians are the one being scouted in order to become expert witnesses in court. But why? Since more cases are being presented to the Supreme Court over voting districts, it seems right to get experts to know how to work with the math side to help evaluate the dilemma the courts are in today.

One Tufts University professor, Moon Dustin, has found a way to do so via a training program where mathematicians are trained to become expert witnesses for gerrymandering trials. Already, the Metric Geometry and Gerrymandering Group has garnered  tremendous interest with this charged political climate and has already set up conferences in California, Texas, Wisconsin and North Carolina.

The definition of the word “gerrymandering” in regards to government purposes is the manipulation of electoral boundaries to favor a certain party, or class.  When we think about anything that has to do with government we think of lawyers, politicians, and senators.  Gerrymandering is not an issue most think of on a daily basis, but professor Moon Duchin at the University of Tufts believes she has a solution to this problem.  Instead of turning to political officials to cease gerrymandering, she believes we should turn to math experts to define electoral boundaries.  This unprecedented idea could be just what we need to end the unfair borderlines.
