Visual Rhetoric- starbucks

0:00: There is a four door car parked in a drive way in front of house with a basketball hoop. All of the doors of the car are opened. It is a nice day out and the car is parked like it was just backed in. the family is most likely either just getting back from somewhere or leaving to go somewhere.

0:01: All doors of the car shut. There are two young boys in the middle row of the car and a girl who looks a little bit older than the boys in the back row of the car. The girl has headphones on probably trying to ignore whatever the two boys are saying to each other.

0:02: in the next second of the video, the boy on the left looks like he is trying to take something from the other boy. The boy that is trying to take something is looking at the other child, while the other child looks like he is holding onto something that isn’t pictured in the video at the moment. The girl in the backseat is looking away, ignoring the fact that these two boys, possibly her brothers, are arguing.

0:03-0:04: The camera zooms into the girl in the backseat. She has her eyes almost closed and is chewing on something, most likely a piece of gum. She has headphones on, not paying attention to anything other than her music. Then the camera zooms to a man in the driver’s seat. He looks a little frustrated. He is most likely these three children’s father, so the fact that these two boys are arguing over something is probably bothering him.

0:05-0:06: The camera then zooms back onto the girl in the back seat but from a side view rather than straight on, like before. She is blowing a bubble with the piece of gum in her mouth.

0:07- 0:09 The camera then shows the boy who before looked like he was getting annoyed with his brother. His mouth is opened, probably shouting at his brother for taking something from him. The camera then moves to a lady sitting in the passenger seat, most likely the children’s mother. It looks like she is looking into the rear view mirror to see what the two boys are fighting about. She opens her mouth slightly like she is about to say something but then the camera switches to the father’s eyes in the rear view mirror most likely looking back at the boys as well.

0:10-0:13: The camera switches back to the girl in the back seat and she just popped her bubble and is looking out the car window. It then moves back to the two boys and they both have their hands on a bag of cheese doodles. It looks they are both pulling the bag so that they can have it for themselves and not share with each other, however, this is causing the cheese doodles to start spilling out of the bag. The camera moves to the boy’s face on the right and then back to the center so both of them are pictured in it. They are still tugging at the bag causing the cheese doodles to fly out everywhere.

0:14-0:16: the camera zooms into the dads face and he is looking at something, most likely the rear view mirror looking back at the cheese doodles flying out. The cheese doodles start falling towards him and he moves his eyes slightly away, looking forward. He looks extremely annoyed. While the dad’s face stays the same, the cheese doodles are flying forward towards him in the background.

0:17: The camera switches back, focusing on the two boys. Both of their mouths are opened, probably because they are yelling at each other. To the left of them camera is blurry but it is the mother looking back at them. In the background the sister is looking at them, she looks shocked. Both of the boys then turn their heads and eyes towards their mother as she opens her mouth to say something to them.

0:18-0:21: The camera moves, just focusing on the mother. She is still in the passenger’s seat but is turned to look at the boys. She mouths the word “now” and then the two boys stop tugging at the bag and the daughter in the back seat looks away. The camera then zooms into the boy on the right buckling his seat belt.

0:22: The camera zooms into the father’s face and it looks like he is looking at his wife.

0:23: The camera zooms away from the father and now you can see the father, mother, and one of the son’s. The mother is turned; it looks like she is talking to the son who is not pictured at this second. The son that is pictured is looking away. Lastly, the father has a smile on his face, probably because they can finally leave for wherever they are going already!

0:24-0:25: The camera is still at the same angle. The mother turns forward and the father puts his hand on top of the wheel and sighs.

0:26-0:30: The car is pulling out of the drive way. The words, “Never give up until they buckle up” come up on the screen. So watching this second by second we would have never known what the moral of this video about. But we learn that the importance of it is to not drive away until everyone is buckled up with their seat belts.

0-1

A woman is standing in a bathroom. It is out of style with tiles on the wall. The bathroom is dark but the window shows it is sunny outside. Her had is on the counter pushing down on something. It looks like she is looking down at her hand. There is a flower growing in a pot in bloom but it looks like it is probably fake. It is placed in a precarious position above the sink. If someone bumped into it, it could easily fall. It suggests both her and the flower are in danger of falling off the edge. Our perspective is looking through a half open door. We are lower than her like a child looking through the door. This suggests that she may be responsible for a child. The word “listen” is on the right of the screen.

1-2

The woman is piling up a white powder with her fingers. In the earlier frame, she was crushing a pill to form this white powder. This is not how pills are prescribed to be taken. She is abusing her own or someone else’s medication. She is likely a drug addict. The word “listen” fades.

2-4

A young man is walking out of the door in a hurry. An older man that seems to be his dad is standing outside. The man looks like he wants to talk to his son about the bag in his hand. The younger man ignores him and continues walking. He seems to be walking to his car.

4-6

The man looks at his son leaving. He is standing outside of his house. At first, his mouth is open and he looks surprised or like he is going to say something. Then he tightly closes his mouth. He looks angry at his son. He looks old and tired. It looks like he hasn’t been sleeping. The word “change” appears on the screen.

6-7

The word fades. They are in a suburban neighborhood. There are a lot of trees that are creating shade. Both their lawn and the neighbor’s lawn don’t have grass but instead just dirt or wood chips. The neighbor down the street has a well kept lawn with grass. All of the houses look similar. The same architect probably designed all of them or they used the same model.  The son is walking to the car. He turns around angrily and yells something back at his dad. He has a jacket in his hand.

7-8

The word “problem appears”. Another young man appears on the drivers side of the car. He was watching and waiting for the other. He is about the same age as the other kid. He doesn’t seem bothered by the fact that his friend was just yelling at his dad. He gets into the car.

8-9

There is a close up of the father’s hands. He is holding a plastic bag with white pills in it. They were his son’s. They were fighting about the son’s drug use. He turns to go back into the house. He is wearing a watch and an oxford shirt. He seems moderately successful. He can’t understand why his son would get into drugs instead of getting a job like he did.  The words fade.

9-11

The son is riding in the back of the car. The window is down. He is looking out the window. He looks tired or deep in thought. Glare from the sun flickers and whiteness the picture. The sun is going down.

11-14

The kid is arguing with a woman his age. It’s probably his girlfriend. It is night time. They are in a suburban neighborhood walking down the sidewalk. The camera moves closer. It looks like he is trying to explain himself. She doesn’t accept the explanation and is still mad. The word “help” appears multiple times on the screen.

14-15

The screen cuts to black. All the words but one disappear.

15-16

The son is on the phone, crying. His hand is against his head. It looks like he is sitting on the ground outside with his back against a concrete wall. The last “help” fades.

16-17

The son and father are sitting on a bench in a park. He was probably reaching out to his father in the last scene on the phone. The man has a wedding ring on. The son is looking forward at the ground and the father is looking at the son. It seems like the son is talking and the father is listening to him. The father is trying to give him a chance to explain himself and tell his side of the story. The man has the same tired, worn out look in his eyes. He has bags under his eyes.

17-18

We are looking over the father’s shoulder. The son is turning his head to look his father in the eye. There seems to be an understanding between them.

18-19

The son is now at what seems to be an AA or NA meeting. He is in a circle with others. They are sitting on metal folding chairs. He is looking at a woman with a paper on her leg. She seems to be in charge. It looks like they are in a school auditorium.

19-20

Camera pans around the outside of the circle. The son is holding a book and looking at the person next to him. The book says, “Under the Influence.” The son is trying to learn about his addiction and get better.

20-21

The son walking out of a building. The building is made of concrete and has bars on the windows. He says bye to the people outside the building. They all look happy.

21-23

His dad and the woman he was arguing with are there next a car that appears to be their’s. The dad hugs his son tightly as the woman watches. They pull away and the dad smiles for the first time in the video. The woman is smiling and hugs the son around his neck. Everyone is happy. The word “change” fades in and out.

24-28

The two are still hugging. The camera pans up to a tree. Sunlight is filtered through the leaves. You are shown where to go for addiction help and the word listen.

“No Smoking”

0.00-0.04

Video starts off with a shelf with a globe on top of a book reading “Loane” on the side written in marker. Another book is open with a rhino figurine placed on top of the open book. The book might be open because the child has not done his homework. The rhino is a “wind up toy” that might express the parent telling him to do the work but never actually did it. The parent probably told him multiple times and he does not do it until the last minute like all children do. The light is shinning in from the open window. The light reflection is bouncing off the globe onto the wall. The rhino falls off the book and the words “Do your homework” appear on the screen in white letters. This video could possibly be about something school related. parents know about speaking to their children, that it is hard to speak to them, and that you have to tell them to do something repeatedly.

0.05-0.07

In this image a child appears to be sitting on the toilet. His boxers are around his ankles, his boxers are blue checkerboard with black lines, he. He is barefoot and in the blurred background you could see one shoe against the wall. He might have just woken up.  He wiggles his right foot and the words “wash your hands” appear on the screen in white letters. This video might be directed towards teenagers and washing their hands after using the bathroom. Parents tend to tell their kids multiple times to wash their hands because it is proper hygiene and you stay health and don’t get sick. This video is starting to go in  the direction of parents always telling their kids everyday activities that they should do everyday in their daily routine.

0.08-0.09

The same boy then appears in the mirror, he is a white red haired teenager. His hair is all messy, he probably just woke up. He opens his mouth looking at his teeth. You can only see his face in the mirror there is a cabinet open covering the rest of the image. The words “Brush your teeth” appear on the screen in white letters. This video can be about hygiene and everyday responsibilities. Parents tend to always be reminding their kids to brush their teeth in the morning and at night.

0.10-0.12

The next image in this video is a boy playing in his backyard. He is playing basketball, there is a shed in the background with a lawn mower in the front of the image. The grass is really green and there is a large tree. There is a stone walkway through the middle of the yard. The boy has shot the ball and the ball is bouncing towards the screen while this is happening the words “Mow the lawn” appear on the screen in white letters. The grass is very long and their are weeds everywhere. This video appears to be heading in the direction of chores kids are asked by their parents. Parents have to constantly remind their children to do their chores and often give them something in return for completing them.

0.13-0.15

The red haired boy reappears on the screen with his hair still messy. He is shaking his hair out and on the screen appears “comb your hair” in white letters. Parents usually tell their children to brush their hair before they go out because they want their child to look nice and presentable before they go out. Often boys don’t brush their hair in the morning before going out and parents have to tell them every morning to brush.

0.16-0.18

A dog is looking at the camera in a living room. He is in front of his water bowl, it is steel with black lining. The dog looks hungry. The door is glass and you can see the outside. His bed is right next to the door and a table top is on the other side with cabinet on the side. There is a light switch right next to the door and the living room is painted blue. The dog has his tongue out and head turned sideways. The words “feed the dog” appear on the screen in white letters. Feeding the dog is another chore which seems to be the concept of this commercial. This ad is definitely about doing chores and things that parents say everyday to their child.

0.19-0.20

The next image is a plate with vegetables, carrots and green beans, a knife is right next to the plate. A carrot is being flipped and landing on the plate. The words “eat your vegetables” appear on the screen in white letters”. Parents are always telling their children to eat vegetables because they want them to have a proper nutrition. Children usually hate eating their vegetables and won’t until to bride them with dessert or something that they want.

0.20-0.24

A boy is sitting on a stone wall and his feet are dangling off the side. He is wearing jeans and sneakers and the laces are untied. There are leaves on the ground and the wind is blowing them away. The boy is swaying his legs back and forth. Children tend to not tie their shoes because they don’t know how or because they don’t see the point in tieing them. Parents want to make sure their children shoes are tied so they don’t hurt themselves. This video is everything that parents say to their kids multiple times in a day.

0.25-0.30

The screen then goes all white and the words “keep kids from smoking.com” come up. The video was about preventing smoking. If you tell your child to do something multiple times a day they have to listen eventually and will become part of their everyday activity and routine. Parents are always trying to protect their kids from making bad decisions that will hurt them. They believe that if they will tell their child repeatedly they will know right from wrong and make the decision that is best for them and will benefit themselves. Not having the parent actually in the video and physically telling the child what to do, shows what children would do if the parent was not there. Parents want to teach their children to do things that essentially to everyday routine.

Visual Rhetoric – nobinaryneeded

0:01 – There’s a person, their knuckles placed firmly on a table. It looks like it’s a bathroom. We’re outside the door looking in, while the word “Listen” rests on the frame. Their elbows look tense, like they’re tightening them as if they were working out, but clearly isn’t. The person looks young based on their outfit, and the smoothness of their skin, from what we can see.

We’re watching from an outsider’s point of view, third person. From outside the bathroom, where we are, it’s blurry. Inside the bathroom with the person, it’s in focus, letting us know that they are what we should be focused on in this shot.

0:02 – A hand is on screen, sweeping a powdery substance around with the thumb. We can assume the person is the girl from the first frame of the video, taking in the delicacy of the hands and the seemingly similar bathroom sink. Again there’s the powdery substance that’s resting on the bathroom sink. Due to the title of the video, it’s safe to assume the substance is cocaine. You can see a vein protruding from the person’s hand, maybe signifying that they are tense or stressed.

The word “Listen” is still in the frame, except this time is blurry, though it most likely means that the word is fading out. Could that be because no one is listening?

0:03 – There is a character with long hair walking out of her house, standing in the door frame as a silhouette. There’s a man out on the porch, holding his hand out but we can’t see what he’s holding, but he is holding something. There’s a few cars outside: a blue one by the house the character is coming out of and then a silver one across the street at another house. It’s safe to assume the person is headed towards the car, as she storms out of their house for some reason, unknown at the moment.

0:05 – We don’t see the main character but we see a man, older age, standing in front of the house, his lips turned into a frown. This man is most likely the character’s father, the character storming out of the house. He looks afraid, and disappointed, but also sad all at the same time. Whether this character is his child or not, he seems like he’s lost all control as a parent, not knowing how to help his kid anymore.

The word “Change” flashes across the screen, signifying that the man’s child needs a chance and that the father has attempted to help them change their dangerous ways.

0:07 – The character has turned around, revealing it to be a teenage boy, maybe early twenties. He’s angry, his fists clenched, his muscles flexing, a piece of clothing tight between his fingers. He’s turned around looking at the man, again most likely his father. He’s yelling at the man out of anger, storming towards the blue car, as he’s most likely about to storm away even further.

0:08 – Another character, a male, scruffy beard, is piling into the passenger seat of the blue car, so he was most likely the getaway driver from the last frame we were in. The word “Problem” fades onto the screen, letting us, the viewers, know that there is a serious problem here in this video.

0:09 – Two hands, in the hands, an alleged bag of cocaine. The hands are fussing with it. We can see a blue shirt behind his hands, so that signifies that this is the same man, the father, from a few frames back.

The word “Problem” is on the screen, more prominent though. Drugs are obviously the problem in this video.

0:12 – It’s night time, we see the boy from earlier arguing with a girl on a sidewalk. They’re most likely arguing about drugs. This girl might be his girlfriend, or just a friend, and it doesn’t seem that she’s happy with the way he’s living his life.

0:14 – It’s the girl the boy was arguing with, arguing back at him. She looks concerned, but also like she’s about to leave the boy because of his issues with the drugs. On the screen, the words “Help” repeat each other one after another. This is a signal for the viewers that the boy needs help or he risks losing everyone he loves.

0:15-0:17 – It starts off with the boy, tears running down his face on the phone, sat at a bench with his father. Assuming he’s on the phone with help, his father is there, supporting his son in this tough time. It’s day time this frame instead of nighttime like the last frame, showing that things are brightening it up for the boy and his father.

0:18-0:20 – The boy sits in a circle in what looks like a school gymnasium with other people in some cold metal chairs. In one frame he’s holding a book. From the words on it, all that can be seen is “DER” which could be disorder or something else similar to that. It seems to be some sort of support group.

The word “Problem” fades onto the screen before dissolving else, showing that the boy is addressing this problem with the drugs.

0:21-0:24 – The boy looks happy, or content at the least, leaving a building and waving goodbye to what seems like his friends. The day has turned brighter than it was in the beginning of the video, signifying events lightening up. The boy runs over to his parents, the dad from earlier, and gives his father a hug before moving onto his mother who we’re meeting for the first time.

As he hugs his mother, the word “Change” shows up on the screen, showing us that things are changing, looking up for the young man.

0:25 – The camera has faded up to the trees above the hugging family, and the word “Listen” is shown. It’s telling viewers to listen to their kids if they need help with addiction with drugs or whatever they’re addicted to. It’s shown with a logo from the company making the video.

0:27-0:30 – The final message of the video still resides in front of the trees. It says “Go to HereToListen.com for tips and tools to help turn addiction around” to give the viewer the chance to turn their lives around if need be, or someone they love.

Video: Hard at work Hurricane Matthew Relief

O:01: An origami money-heart unfolds to the left of the screen upon a brown background. The dollar looks old, crumpled, and heavily used. The idea that it was a heart to begin with, implies a sympathetic tone to the start of the video.

0:02: This frame is very similar to the last, although the heart begins to beat. This gives life and motion to the dollar. This further sends home the message of sympathy. Hearts are a symbol of love, and money is a symbol of capitalism, and possibly greed. These ideas come together to create a conflict in what the viewer is supposed to be feeling.

0:04: The dollar unfolds, revealing the face of George Washington, as it is clearly a one-dollar bill. Interestingly enough, the dollar is completely perfect. No marks from where the bill was folded, or crumples from before. The heart is gone now, leaving just the familiar face of a regular dollar bill.

0:06: A macro close-up shot of the dollar is shown. It is a close up to a folded edge of the dollar. The zoom-in could be the beginnings of a new fold.

0:07: The camera zooms back out, showing the dollar folding itself into a different shape. It is currently unclear what the bill will be folding into.

0:08: The back of the bill has folded up, and the sides as well. This makes the dollar into a loose-airplane shape. This could be another symbol for capitalism and worldwide commercialism. People spend hundreds of dollars to fly on planes, and this plane is literally made of dollars.

0:10: The bill continues to fold into irregular shapes, this time it is in the shape of a doctors stethoscope. A stethoscope is a symbol for the medical field. Doctors wear stethoscopes around their necks, and use it to check the heartbeat of their patient. Earlier in the video, the dollar was folded into a heart shape, and would pulsate with a heartbeat. This symbol could be another reminder of the human element in this video.

0:12: The dollar has folded itself into a rectangular prism, while something appears out of the side, also folded by the dollar. Looks like the head of a nail.

0:13: The nail protrudes further, and a hammer comes into view. The hammer is also made from origami money. These are, similarly to the airplane, symbols for what money can accomplish. The hammer and nail represent what human beings can do with a dollar. One dollar is not a lot of money, but if everybody in america gave just one dollar, many things could be achieved with that money.

0:15: The origami dollar was struck by the hammer, and fell. It has now contorted itself into the shape of a box.

0:17: The box has gained a roof, and the box is now clearly a house. This “hammers home” the point that was made with the previous origami folds. The houses represent what the hammer and nail were accomplishing. It is symbolizing to the audience that change can be achieved, and goals can be met with these dollars.

0:20: The dollar has now folded into the shape of a human hand, and is starting to outstretch its fingers, palm side up. Similar to the heart, this brings ideas of humanity into the dollar. Hands are symbolically used to show unity. When people act as one, they are often shown holding hands. When people show love to one another, this is often shown using an outstretched hand. Hands are symbols of unity for humanity, and hard work. These are the two themes that I think the video was trying to show the most.

0:25: The fingers begin to close as the screen fades to black.

The video was for help with Hurricane Matthew. People who were hit by the Hurricane were in need of help, and this video was used to inspire awareness for this cause. The things that the dollar would fold into were carefully chosen to illustrate the ideas that the video was trying to get across. Each one was specifically picked to emit feeling and life into the video.

Visual Rhetoric-thecommonblackhawk

00:01

The advertisement begins in black and white with a view from above, presumably from a helicopter but could possibly be from a tall building. The lack of color seems to exemplify the drama of the scene. What seems to be an “American Dream” neighborhood is shown with the streets flooded with water. From what can be seen, the neighborhood consists of about 33 homes (about 4 rows of 8 with the furthest street from the camera having a cul-de-sac). There are 5 vehicles that seem to be abandoned in the middle of the cul-de-sac with various other vehicles that seemed to have been left in the driveways of the neighborhood. There is also an open field behind the neighborhood that is also flooded with water.

What is striking about the image is that the water is deep enough to cause a reflection of the landscape. Each home, tree, and bush have their reflection shown underneath them showing that the entire neighborhood is in fact underwater. While the water is deep enough to cause a reflection, it is also noticeable that the water only reaches the top of the wheel of most of the vehicles shown. This shows a sign of hope that while extensive damage has noticeably been done, it is not to the point of being correctable.

Finally, at the bottom right of the screen, the sentence “WHEN THE FLOODS CAME” is pictured alluding to the fact that there will be more aspects of this video relating to the flooding seen. With what can be seen so far, it is hard to identify where it is that was flooded and when it happened. The cause of the flooding is also not clear.

00:03

The picture is still back and white and now shows an older African American man (possibly around 70) sitting on a rocking chair on what is presumably the porch to his home. Behind him is a home that does not seem to have been well kept with dirty and chipped siding and beat down doors and windows. The man pictured is presumably staring out at the flood waters in front of his house. The water level is high with only a single step between the water and his porch. This picture really shows the severity of the flooding.

The man pictured is wearing a white tank top, jeans, white socks, flipflops, sunglasses, and a baseball cap. The expression on his face is one of disbelief. There is also a pair of what seems to be tall rain boots sitting in front of his doorway. How the man is dressed and the condition of his house suggests that he is in poverty or in danger of becoming so. The words “IN BATON ROUGE AND SURROUNDING PARISHES” are plastered across the screen. There is no missing them. These words help to explain where this flooding took place and who it was that was affected by it.

00:06

With this scene still being in black and white, it is safe to assume the rest of the video will be as well. There is an angled camera view of two young African American children around the age of 5 or 6. The kid closest to the camera seems to be smiling with his hands gripping the half open window they are peering out though his mouth cannot be seen due to the window being in the way. The second kid has a look of curiosity and possibly sadness. Both of them bare a look of innocence that only a child can have. Several cars that seemed to be parked can be seen in both directions on the side of the road. Directly behind the car that the kids are in, a huddle of two or three people can be made out but what they are doing is not clear. The phrase “THE CALL WENT OUT” is posted at a decent font which seems to be explaining that Baton Rouge called our for help due to the flooding.

00:08

What is pictured here is 4 different boats each with at least 2 people in them. The people are all wearing t-shirts and shorts which shows that they are not first responders, but everyday people.  The general vibe of this scene is one of unity. These boats are floating in water that fills what seems to be a street. There are cares off to the side of the road in the distance which shows that what used to be a road for driving can now only be navigated on a boat. On the boat closest to the camera, 3 men standing in the water which is knee deep, are helping a woman sit down in the boat. Behind them is a fleet of 3 more boats which seem to either be looking for people who are trapped, or escaping the flooding waters themselves. “THOUSANDS GOT UP” is the phrase posted across the middle of this scene. This most likely defines the goal of those pictured within the boats.

00:10

This scene is a camera angle from behind. What is shown is the back of 3 small boats with motors in the water. There seems to be 8 men pictured and at first glance, those pictured could be mistaken with those from last scene but if looked at longer, it is clear that those pictured here are police officers or another type of first responders. They are piloting their boats in a line and seem to be looking at house to their right. The house is almost completely submerged under water with the water level being about a foot shy of the roof at some parts. The phrase “AND ANSWERED THE CALL” is shown at the top of this scene stating that the help that Baton Rouge sent for is being answered. What has not been answered is by who is this being answered?

 00:12

A man wearing shorts, a t-shirt, a baseball cap, and a utility vest is pictured here walking in water almost two his knees. A house is pictured behind them which could possibly be where he is coming from. It is not known if his role was that of assistance or of someone needing assistance. He is looking down as he walks, (probably so he does not step on anything dangerous) so his facial expression is hard to see. From what can be seen in the shadow, he seems to be determined. No phrase was attached to this scene unlike the others.

00:13

Here we see a man in nicer clothing, a shirt with a collar tucked into slacks with a belt and wearing a baseball cap, talking on the phone looking straight ahead. He is standing in water of which the depth cannot be determined. He is looking at a jeep that has its headlights on and seems to be coming towards his. It seems as though the man pictured is talking on the phone with the driver of the jeep but that could also just be the timing of the photo. It is clear that the man is standing on what used to be a road because just off to his right, there is a speed limit sign stating that the speed limit is 15 MPH. There is also a row of mailboxes to his left which indicate that he is probably standing on a neighborhood street.

00:15

Three people are pictured here sitting on a boat on what seems to be a neighborhood street. Their boat had just passed a car that is almost completely submerged underwater with the passenger door left wide open. Two of the people on the boat are wearing jackets and baseball caps and seem to be pointing towards a house that is possibly submerged by water. Behind them, someone wearing a poncho with the hood up seems to have their eyes fixed on the vehicle that is submerged. The hood being up could along with what seems to be little pellet splashes in the water point to the fact that it is probably raining. Maybe the cause of all of the flooding seen is due to the storm that this scene seems to be depicting. The phrase “SAVING PEOPLE” is going across the screen which may be a major indicator as to what the people in the boat are doing.

00:17

The same phrase “SAVING PEOPLE” is shown in the middle of the screen. This picture shows a man (about 20) in shorts and a tank top pulling a boat through another street that seems to have been flooded.  In the boat that he is pulling sits a kid about the age of 14 and what seems to be the 20 year old’s father (due to the receding hairline). It is very clear that it is raining doe to the sheer amount of splashing that is being caused by the raindrops hitting the water.

00:18

Four dogs on a boat are pictured here. They seem to be curious and a bit confused with all of the commotion. The boat that the dogs are on is tied to another boat that cannot be seen very well. Next to the unseen boat is what is presumably a man on a kayak probably talking to those on the boat pulling the dogs. The phrase “SAVING PETS” is in the middle of the screen explaining that the amount of help Baton Rouge has received has even been extended to pets. It is not clear if the dogs pictured have owners, belong to the same owner, or belong to whoever pulls the boat. Who every they belong to, it’s a strong sight seeing people come together to assist animals who could not help themselves.

00:19

We see a medium sized dog that looks scared and traumatized being held by someone with two arms. It seems as though the person holding it is standing in water because the two people behind them are standing in water next to their boat. The people behind the person with the dog have backpacks on and it looks like they may be going out to try and assist in any way that they can. The same phase “SAVING PETS” is on this screen alluding that the dog pictured was saved. Whether or not the dog belongs to the person holding it or not is another question.

00:22

The silhouette of a woman is pictured standing in what is probably her house. She is facing away from the camera with her hands on her hips most likely in disbelief in what she sees. She standing in what seems to be her kitchen, due to cabinets being on her left, in ankle deep water. A caption that says “AND IT’S ONLY THE BEGINNING” goes across the screen. The woman pictured has body language that says shocked yet determined which goes well with the caption. It only being the beginning is probably referencing the battle that those affected by the storm are about to face. Getting their lives back together will not be an easy task. This is amplified by the picture of the woman standing in her own kitchen in ankle deep water.

00:23

Picture here is a long flatbed tractor trailer truck filled with a bunch of sacks with detailed information on them. The sacks are tied down to the flatbed with straps and are presumably filled with food or other necessities. A second truck can be seen to left of the first truck meaning that this could possibly be a truck depot where supplies are being taken to. This is probably one of many truck stops in the effort to get supplies to Baton Rouge. This scene is the first scene that does not show any type of flooding probably acting as the light at the end of the tunnel for everything going on.

 00:26

The exact same picture described above is pictured here except there is an advertisement for a website going across the middle. “OurTurnToHelp.org” is the name of the website and is explaining to the viewer that they to can help with the flooding at Baton Rouge by going to this website. This helps decipher what is being depicted in the scene in that it is probably a necessity of some sort to the people who were affected by the flooding.

00:29

A young girl is seen hugging possibly an older sister from behind. They both have smirks on their face and seem to be better off than everyone depicted in the scenes before. This is probably to show the extent of how much help can make a difference. There is no water in site and their home behind them seems to be in tact. This made it clear that the people of Baton Rouge have a fight a head of them but every single aspect of help they receives works to bring back the community.

Visual Rhetoric- Green Eggs and Ham

00:01

We see an elderly man staring of into the distance. On the screen, “Harvey Lauer since 1933” appears. Harvey Lauer is probably the man’s name. As he stares off into the distance, he may be thinking about his life, and the journeys it has taken him on. If not life, he looks like he is thinking about something in depth. There is something an object in front of him, however it is to blurry to tell what it is at this point.

The background is blurry as well. It looks like the sun is beaming into the room the man is in. Behind him is a plain gray wall. Possibly the man is in a waiting room of some sort.

00:02

The man’s head has moved, like he is moving from side to side. The object in front of him is more visible, it looks like he is pulling it, which is causing him to sway his head. The man is still staring off into the distance, so he still may be thinking about something. The background still hasn’t changed

00:03

The camera becomes further away from the man’s face. So the object is visible, it looks like an Accordion. He is still staring off into space, looking rather lonely. So he is probably practicing by himself. The background is still not visible.

00:04

Nothing much changes in this shot. The man’s hand has now become visible. It is also definite that the man is playing the accordion

00:05

The camera is backed off so now the mans entire body is visible. He is playing a rather large accordion that looks old. He probably has had the accordion for many years. He is possibly very good at playing it then. He is still staring in the distance, but now it looks like he is staring at a certain object. He is wearing a blue plaid shirt and navy blue dress pants.

Now you can see the entire background. There are many pictures on his on side. Possibly pictures of is family. It looks like a living room of some sort. There is a couch, shelves with the pictures. It looks like there is a rug as well. Also in the background is a piano. So he is possibly a very accomplished musician.  It is also probably the living room of his house. He possibly has lived there for awhile, and has raised a family in the house. Possibly those pictures in the background are of the family he has raised.

00:06

Nothing much has really changed in this shot. His hand moved down the accordion, so he is definitely playing the accordion. He is staring more in depth at whatever has caught his attention.

00:07-00:08

More photos have become visible, as the camera has zoomed away from the man himself. His mouth has now opened, possibly he is singing as he plays the accordion. He is still staring in the distance.

00:09

The mans has looks like he has zeroed in on the object he is looking at in the distance. His mouth has closed, so possibly he has said something in the last sequence. There are some paintings in the background that have now become more visible. The room has a “homey” feeling to it.

00:10-00:12

Nothing changes in the sequences, other than the accordion moving as he plays intensely.

00:13-00:15

The camera has now zeroed in on his hand. He has a wedding ring on, so he probably made a life with his wife in that house. All of those pictures are possibly those of the family they raised. He still looks lonely, so possibly his wife has died. As this is going on, he still is playing the accordion.

00:16-00:18

Now it shows a picture of him and a women who possibly is his wife and another couple at a meeting of some sorts. This is probably one of the pictures from the background, going into his life’s detail. The meeting was probably some sort of organizational him and his wife were apart of. He possibly looks lonely because the picture reminded him of their life together.

00:19

The camera is focused back on the man, centering right under his neck. All his chin and neck wrinkles become visible from up close, showing his age. The plads of his shirt are more visible. He is continuing to play the accordion.

00:20-00:22

His eyes are visible, and he is still staring off into the distance. Now he looks confused as he stares at whatever he is staring at. Possibly he is staring off into space, and something reminded him of something that confuses or upsets him. Even though he looks confused, he is continuing to play the accordion.

00:23

The camera is now outside of a house, most likely his. It is a brick and white townhouse. Outside, it’s a beautiful sunny day, the grass is green just what the perfect day looks like. A women is walking in the front door, holding a brown paper bag.

00:24-00:27

The women has opened the front door, and the message, “America, Let’s do Lunch” appears on the screen. The meals on wheels logo appears on the screen, so the man was getting a lunch from meals on wheels. This was an ad showing a story of one of the people benefited from the great organization that meals on wheels is.

Visual Rhetoric—Chippy

0-01: There is a decent sized house with a car that has four doors and three of them are open and then they close shut by the people inside. There is also a basketball net in the driveway so a family with children probably lives in the house and that is probably who is in the car. This also emphasizes that the children are athletic. There are trees also in the background and there is a clear sky so the family is probably going somewhere together. The car is backed into the driveway so it seems as if the family was loading the trunk of the car to go somewhere. There is no brand on the front of the car, so this makes it clear that it is not a car commercial. The house and the car makes it seem like the family comes from the middle class.

01-03: We are now able to see inside the car and there are two young boys in the back seat fighting over something and there is another girl in the way back seat who seems around two years older and she has headphones in listening to music and seems to be chewing on something. The boys seem to be yelling at each other over what they are fighting for. They are both pulling on whatever it is they are fighting for. The boy on the right is wearing a soccer jersey so the family must be going to his soccer game. The girl in the back has red drumsticks in her hands and is banging them on the seats not paying attention to her brothers.

03-05: The camera zooms in on the girl in the back and she seems to be really into her music her eyes are basically closed and her head is nodding up and down. We can assume she has the music on loud. Then the camera zooms into the driver seat where there is a man with his seat belt on who is probably the father of the children in the backseat. He seems concerned and stressed out.

05-07: It is still focused on the dad and then you see the girl raising her hands in the air in the backseat like she is dancing. Then the camera switches to her and she is blowing a bubble out of her gum with her eyes closed. She seems relaxed and unaware of her brothers fighting still.

07-09: The camera moves to the boy on the right and it looks like he is screaming at his other brother because he looks up at him. The camera then switches to the passenger seat and there is a women with short hair and glasses who I assume to be the mother. She seems to be looking up at something and it looks like she is looking at her children through the rear view mirror. She is almost smiling and then it looks like she is about to say something to her children. Then it switches to the rear view mirror where the father is looking directly into the camera but probably is looking at the children. He seems like he is waiting for something. In the back you can still see their house so that shows that they have not yet left they are still sitting in the driveway.

09-11: The camera switches from the dad to the girl who is blowing a bubble and then it pops. Now we see what the two brothers are fighting over it is a bag of cheetos and they are pulling on either end of it squinting their faces so they must be pulling on the bag hard. The bag busts open and cheetos start to fly all over the car and the boy on the right starts to smile.

12-17: The cheetos are flying all over the car still and the camera turns to the dad and he is watching the cheetos fly over his shoulder in front of him. He has a small smile on his face. The boys start to yell and argue in the back and you see the mother turn around and the sister seems to have noticed what happened. The mom probably turned around in anger because of what just happened.

17-20: The mom seems to have said something and the kids look up at her and then the camera switches to her talking to them with a serious look on her face. You can see her mouth the word “now” slowly and then the kids stop what they are doing and all turn to the side and grab their seat belts.  She seems irritated and annoyed at what just happened. The girl in the backseat also puts her seat belt on but she still has her headphones on so she probably knew what her mother was going to say without having to hear it. We can assume that the mom asked them to put their seat belts on now. This shows that the children are used to being told to put their seat belts on because the girl did it without hesitation while listening to her music.

20-24: The camera zooms into the boy in the soccer jersey putting on his seat belt and fastening it correctly. Now we see the dad who is now smiling and the mom looks annoyed as she wipes a cheeto off of her shoulder. The dad blows out a deep breath almost like in relief and grabs the steering wheel. Now that everyone in the car has their seat belts on the dad is probably about to start driving.

24-30: The dad looks more relaxed and the camera zooms out so you see the car finally pulling out of the driveway and driving away and then the words “Never give up until they buckle up” which shows that this was a video that reminds everyone to always wear a seat belt and to not drive until everyone has one on.

We are America Ad Response

0:00-0:10

The video begins in some kind of novelty store. The store is selling patriotic American items. There is a lifelike doll that that the video is focused on has a likeness to “Uncle Sam” his hat is red, his beard is white paired with the blue sweater he is wearing symbolizes the United States.  Behind him there are red white and blue outfits next to the classic 5 pointed American star. The commercial then pans away taking the focus to a normal sidewalk with American flags hanging from streetlights and a wooden American flag stuck to the wall.  John Cena appears walking next to a pizza and beer sign two food items related to American culture. John Cena is a  strong white man wearing a navy blue shirt appealing to the audience’s sense of American masculinity through his wardrobe choice and his size. His eyes are looking directly at the camera his shoulders are rocking back and forth to suggest that he is having a leisurely conversation with the audience.

0:10-0:20

John Cena is still walking speaking in a casual manner but his facial expressions are those of someone trying to persuade. There is a man playing drums on a garbage can behind John Cena expressing himself a freedom associated with American ideals. There is a woman in the background to showcase how this walkway is in a neighborhood that has a normal sized population. Her face is not in focus to show her lack of  importance.  As John Cena keeps walking past another store down the sidewalk another woman appears walking out of the store closer to John she has a red dress and an american flag bandanna expressing the american theme present in this video. There are a rack of clothes for sale that appear after the woman in the red dress. This detail show how this town is a place of commerce. A man on the opposite of the clothes rack is drinking a coffee implying he is a working man looks at the clothes with interest as John continues to talk. The light posts in the background are the same color as the statue of liberty. The brick  building also remind the viewer of colonial america.

0:20-0:30

As John Cena keeps walking there is a man facing the opposite direction walking back with a backpack which insinuates he’s either a student or someone that has some kind of responsibility. As soon as this man leaves there is a small girl in a wheelchair behind John who looks like shes trying to see the camera from behind John. Shes wearing a darker red. Her presence is to show the contrast between John and the girl while all of it is still considered American. This is implying diversity to American identities. The man that was previously looking at the clothes is now talking to the little girl. showing how there is communications between these different identities. these people are walking are reorganizing into a parade behind John. as they all line up the sunlight hits John Cena as soon as he finishes his sentence.

Video: Never Give Up Until They Buckle Up

Seconds 1-10: The video starts out with a visual of what looks like a family home on a nice and sunny day.  There is a basketball net in the yard and the house is gray with white shutters.  A car is sitting in the driveway with three of it’s doors open.  This car happens to be an SUV which combined with the house and basketball net suggests that there is a family living at this residence.  The license plate on the car does not look like most do in the United States, which suggests that maybe the family lives in Canada.

The video then proceeds to show a young girl sitting in the back seat of the SUV. She is wearing pink headphones and playing with drumsticks, tapping them on the back of the seat in front of her.  She is singing with her eyes closed and seems to be oblivious to her surroundings.  In front of her are what one would assume to be her two brothers.  They are having a tug of war over an item that is not clearly seen yet.  We then jump to a visual of a man sitting in the driver seat of the car, most likely the father of the family.  He has a slightly distressed look on his face which appears to be due to his children being rowdy in the back seat.  The camera then jumps back to the daughter blowing a bubble with her gum, still oblivious to anything else that is going on.  We then see the boys yawning, and then a new person appears, which seems to be the mother.  She is wearing rectangular glasses, a yellow sweater, and a gold necklace.  She is only viewed from the neck up like everyone else in the vehicle.  The mother then appears to start saying something while the father looks in the rear view mirror at his children.

Seconds 10-20: It becomes clear what the boys were fighting over in the beginning of the video, a bag of cheese puffs!  The boys continue to fight over it which ends up causing the bag to explode open and puffs go flying everywhere.  In the background of the flying cheese puffs we can see the boys making faces at one another, their mouths wide open.  The camera then places its sights on the father, who gazes in front of him with a blank stare on his face.  There is a tiny smirk and a little eye emotion, but other than that he is relatively plain faced.  Maybe this kind of fighting is something he is used to with a house of kids.

We then see the boys starting to argue. Their mouths open and they raise their hands.  It seems that they both really wanted those cheese puffs.  Then the mother is shown turning around and sternly says something to the boys.  The boys immediately listen to the mother and stop fighting.  They then proceed to quickly put their seat belts on, as does the sister.  How quick all of their reactions were to their mother gives us a sense that the mother does most of the parenting in this family, while the father sits back silently.  She is most likely the stricter of the two parents.

Seconds 20-30: Everyone puts on their seat belts, and then we see the father and mother in the front seat.  The father smiles, most likely a sign of relief that all of his kids are behaving properly now, so he can finally start driving.  It appears as though the father was waiting to start driving until the children all put their seat belts on, giving us the notion that the parents put safety first.  The mother then proceeds to brush a cheese puff off of her shoulder and sighs, as does the father.  The SUV then pulls out of the driveway, onto a sunny road.  The road is surrounded with trees and houses.  The sun shining gives the viewer a sense of happiness, and that all is right with the family.
