Core Value 1. My work demonstrates that I used a variety of social and interactive practices that involve recursive stages of exploration, discovery, conceptualization, and development.

My hypothesis and thesis is when I truly practiced exploration and development, discovery because my thesis was when we I was trying to figure out what to focus my essay on. Through out the semester I learned more about my subject and explore more on the subject based on the feedback I got . I discovered the best way to still talk about what i wanted to but have more to talk about and more to research on.

Core Value 2. My work demonstrates that I read critically, and that I placed texts into conversation with one another to create meaning by synthesizing ideas from various discourse communities.

My work demonstrates that I read critically based on my Rebuttal paper because it was an argumentative paper so like a conversation because I was defending my argument about the topic that was writing about. I used many different articles and websites to help me explain why my theory was a good idea. I also learned new thing on my topic then i thought i knew. It was very educational because i learned what others learned on the topic and more about the risk of my subject.

Core Value 3. My work demonstrates that I rhetorically analyzed the purpose, audience, and contexts of my own writing and other texts and visual arguments.

My work demonstrates that rhetorically analyzed the purpose, context, and audience because i make sure that the readers knew what the article is about from the beginning so they are not confused. I showed this well in my Research paper especially addressing the audience because i talked about my own experienced so they feel like they can relate to the subject also. I make sure they knew what they i was trying to explains and made sure that i was staying on topic and that the paragraphs related to each other.

Core Value 4: My work demonstrates that I have met the expectations of academic writing by locating, evaluating, and incorporating illustrations and evidence to support my own ideas and interpretations.

My work demonstrates that I have the expectations of academic writing based on how welled I follow instruction that lead up to my Research paper. All the work i did on my 3 paper and the feedback were a great help in writing it because in those i already did all the research I needed for my research paper. I did a lot research about my subject that were really beneficial to my final paper.

Core Value 5. My work demonstrates that I respect my ethical responsibility to represent complex ideas fairly and to the sources of my information with appropriate citation.

My work demonstrates that I respect my ethical responsibility to represent complex fairly and sources my information based on all my papers due to the fact that I references all my sources that I used in my paper if they were used and I cited the article id i quoted someone like in my Research Paper and my annotated bibliography. I also made sure that I explain what the article talks about well and not changed what it said based on my own opinion. You should always cite your sources because you are plagiarizing another persons hard work. It is better if its in you on words because you know that did the work

Core Value 1. My work demonstrates that I used a variety of social and interactive practices that involve recursive stages of exploration, discovery, conceptualization, and development.

Over the course of the semester I have watched the thesis of my research paper evolve into what it is now. Through the use of resources, I have been educated on this topic and developed a more clear position on the issue. When my thoughts were overcrowding each other and I wasn’t sure where to begin my research or how to clearly phrase what I was looking for specifically, Professor gave me some simple yet effective search terms that lead me to exactly what I was looking for. In my Definition Essay I needed to give my idea a definition which was challenging considering my topic was more of a way of thinking than a set definition, but I managed to use the definition of the “white picket fence” phrase to show my audience exactly what I was not trying to promote.

Core Value 2. My work demonstrates that I read critically, and that I placed texts into conversation with one another to create meaning by synthesizing ideas from various discourse communities.

My Causal Paper at first was a little disorganized and I had trouble trying to get my ideas to make clear connections, but through some revision I was able to make things coincide with each other. In a specific example I used a database containing statistical information on a family’s criminal history and the influence it had on their children and compared those findings to Oprah Winfrey’s troublesome childhood and how it got her to where she is today. It was challenging to show my audience the connections that I knew were there. In the end I did well in conveying the overall meaning of the essay and showing the audience how each type source related to one another.

Core Value 3. My work demonstrates that I rhetorically analyzed the purpose, audience, and contexts of my own writing and other texts and visual arguments.

With my topic being a unique idea that puzzles many individuals, I knew there was going to be a lot to refute. I wanted to address my refuting audience with as many facts I could obtain. In my Rebuttal Essay, I showed my audience the benefits brought by implementing challenges throughout a child’s upbringing. I clearly identified the things a child needs to have in order to succeed thus identifying what type of challenge I wanted to implement into the idea of child raising. I also brought to light, that an overall close connection a family experiences is the most important thing a child can have. I included this to show my refuting audience that I was agreeing with them to an extent and that my beliefs were not so far from theirs.

Core Value 4: My work demonstrates that I have met the expectations of academic writing by locating, evaluating, and incorporating illustrations and evidence to support my own ideas and interpretations.

Over the course of this semester, I gathered different ideas from different sources to better organize my thoughts and turn them into a grounded opinion supported by evidence. In my  Research Paper I included many ideas brought by different and unique sources. Not only was the Research Paper created by using the three small arguments: Causal, Rebuttal, and Definition, but it also included several different standpoints that all came to a similar agreement when brought together.

Core Value 5. My work demonstrates that I respect my ethical responsibility to represent complex ideas fairly and to the sources of my information with appropriate citation.

Many of my sources came from unique places such as Psychology websites, a Ted Talk, and a Parenting Booklet. My Annotated Bibliography displays all of the sources I used including the ones I simply learned from. I believe that even the smallest of articles played a part in shaping my topic, and so I made sure to include sources that simply inspired my ideas. It is crucial to include all of the sources used when the paper was first being started even if some sources were never directly cited in the text of my essays. Any source that gave the impression as a reliable and supporting cause to my topic was included in the Annotated Bibliography as well as at the end of each small argumentative essay.

The NFL Needs to Make the Change!

Each year, at around the end of the summer, football fans are far more than ready to begin watching their favorite teams and favorite players take the field. Fantasy drafts begin, team projections for the season start to get released, and players/coaches are finally ready to move on from all the offseason training camps and workouts. It is football season. One thing, however, that also takes place during the end of the summer for the NFL is the preseason. Many fans seem to not care about the preseason because these games are meaningless. Fans would rather buy tickets and go to the games that actually have an effect on their teams post season dreams, they do not want to tune into the games where the starters do not make an appearance. Instead of playing all four of the current NFL’s preseason schedule games, it should be reduced to just two. The regular season should start in late August when the third and fourth preseason games take place. This would allow the regular season to be expanded to 18 games instead of the current 16. The season would also end at around the first week of February, which is currently where it ends now. This is a much better schedule for everyone involved. The NFL has already announced that starting in the 2021 season, there will be 17 regular season games and three preseason games. This is the right step in perfecting the schedule, but not quite perfect just yet.

The current regular season schedule is laid out so that each team plays every team in their division twice, every team in a specific division in their own conference, every team in a specific division in the opposite conference, and then two teams in the same conference that finished in the same spot in their specific division. That is how a 16 game conference is made for each new NFL regular season. For my proposal of an 18 game schedule, the schedules current format remains the same except the 2 extra games that are played will be a random team in your conference and a random team outside of your conference.

People may think that playing 18 games for certain players may cause more injuries and no one wants to see a players career be ended early due to injuries. Jerry Jones, who is the owner, president and general manager of the wealthiest sports team in the entire world, The Dallas Cowboys, has said he believes an 18 game schedule would actually reduce the amount of injuries. Jones, when talking about the possibility of an 18 game schedule, has stated, “I think, candidly, it’s probably physically better for players than it is to have the longer preseason, the longer practicing. Our studies show that we actually have a ramped-up injury situation with players during preseason as opposed to the injury factor in the regular season.” Jones also believes that reducing the preseason games to just two games is also a much better idea than to have four. Jones has stated, “My solution is real simple, cut back on preseason games. Have one at each team’s home, play a couple of them and then add two games to the regular season. That’s a better equity or a better way of players using what they bring to the table, their talents, their skills, their professional time in pro sports. That’ll give them a bigger pay day that is fair. The other thing it does is it certainly gives our fans what we all think they deserve and that is a competitive game.” It seems Jerry Jones thinks a lot like myself. All of the points he makes are very similar to the ones I have in mind such as making the season longer, shortening the preseason, focusing on players health, players receiving more pay for the extra games, and giving the loyal NFL fans what they want, which is more football.

Another proposal that the league has offered is that if the season expands to 18 games, then players can only play in 16 of them at most. This then eliminates any higher chance of players getting more injured in an 18 game season because they can only play up to 16 of them. This creates a more strategical approach for coaches. Would coaches want to bench their best players against weaker opposition? Would coaches want to play all their star players in the first 16 games so that they can potentially clinch a play off spot and not have to worry about the tough and cold December games? This is a longer NFL season with a huge twist that is creative and fun. This proposal also benefits players more than hurts them. Jenna West of Sports illustrated writes, “Owners are enticed by the idea of a longer season considering the more revenue it would create. An analysis done by the NFL Players Association found that up to $2.5 Billion in additional annual revenue could be generated with two more games. That would add $15 million to each team’s salary cap and give players more money.” Players will be getting paid more money to play in the same amount of games. More games causes a longer regular season and shortened preseason which gives fans more games to look forward to considering the regular season games actually mean something. The idea of players only being able to play in 16 of the 18 games also causes coaches to focus on another aspect of strategically setting up their team for success. If a team that plays with less starters were to beat a team that had a lot more of their starters in causes excitement and an underdog vibe that fans love to see in sports, especially in football.

Rebuttal rewrite- Samtheman1448

Longer Seasons Means Better Seasons

There are some people out there that believe expanding the NFL season is not a good idea and that it puts the players health at risk because more games on the body equals a higher chance in sustaining an injury. That point makes sense, more physical football games means more wear and tear on the body. Out of the four big American sport leagues, an NFL career is the shortest in length simply because some guys’ bodies in the league become too injury prone to the fast and furious play style that the NFL provides. However, the NFL is already planned to move to 17 games starting in 2021 and looks to possibly advance to 18 in the near future. There have been many proposals thrown in the mix for how an 18 game season would work. It seems that the most likely and most popular idea that is currently spreading throughout the league is that an 18 game season will take place, but players will only be allowed to participate in a maximum amount of 16 games. Also, this plan includes reducing the preseason games from four to two which means that is even less football than in previous years. If there are less meaningless games and the same amount of meaningful games for the players to participate in, that means there is not any way this 18 game plan will result in more injuries than before. More football games will also most likely mean that there will be an increase in roster size. There is currently a 46-man game day roster limit that has been implemented for a few seasons now and that number would have to change if the seasons become longer. Larger rosters also means more fun as well for the fans of the league to watch and see. Some teams may stack their offensive lines with more players to rotate in and out of games to keep the players from getting tired. Other teams could potentially acquire an abundance of edge rushers for the same reason. there are many different possibilities that teams can take and it would be interesting to see what teams did with their rosters.

More regular season football games also give worse teams in the beginning of the season a better chance to make a late playoff push. This is beneficial to the entire league because since there are more games added on to the season, teams have more of a reason to continue to try in the season after having a potential losing streak. This can now change, with the two extra games offering more potential to still push late in the season with the addition of a 7th playoff spot in each conference that the NFL is adding, starting in the 2020 season.

An 18 game schedule would most certainly make more money for the league as well. There really isn’t any extra tasks they are asked to take part in when they still would be playing in only 16 games and two less preseason games. On top of all that, the other great idea for an 18 game season is to add another bye week. This would officially mean players are getting another whole week vacation away from the brutal game to rest their bodies. Telling these professional athletes that they will be paid more money, play the same amount of games and have more time off during the season sounds like a slam dunk of an idea that not many will oppose.

There are fans out there that will say they don’t see any problem with the current 16 game schedule and a part of me agrees with them. However, like previously stated, the NFL Players Association has already officially agreed that the league is expanding to a 17 game season starting in 2021. The 17 game season does not come off the tongue nicely for anyone. An odd number of games? this eliminates the complete fairness of an even number of games when it comes to home and away games. Now, some teams (most likely half the teams) in the league will be forced to play an extra away game. the other teams will have an extra home game and traveling to play opponents in professional sports is not easy and there is definitely an advantage for the home team. Even in sports for the NFL, the home team usually always given at least a three point advantage over the visiting team because of how home field advantage works.

In conclusion, it makes perfect sense for the league to move on to 18 games after the 17 game season takes place. All the other American leagues have an even number of games for their teams to play. Instead of moving back to the 16 game format we should move on with life and focus on the idea of an 18 game season. Players and fans will both benefit from 18 game season, and all Americans favorite thing to watch on Sunday’s with their family and friends expands to even more games, which means more of watching your favorite teams and players play in what is the most popular professional sport in the country, The National Football League.

Having a Difficult Childhood
Creates Extraordinary Individuals

Megan Hustad the author of Surprising Benefits for Those Who Had Tough Childhoods asks herself “What possible benefit is there in a tumultuous childhood?” Hustad raises an imperative question in her Psychology Today article. She goes on to describe the not so apparent benefits of having a problematic childhood. Adults who’ve had troublesome childhoods developing almost a 6th sense when they walk into a room as a result. This skill among others, can be seen in similar individuals except for those who may have had an uncomplicated childhood.

Take for example, celebrities and athletes who had to work their way up from nothing in order to get to where they are today compared to the children of celebrities who have already had a head start to their careers just by being born. There is something different about them, a more humble attitude on things. No matter how much they gain, their attitude and persona continue to be unpretentious. Oprah Winfrey, whose childhood was full of moving from family member to family member all in small apartments sharing rooms, and at one point facing sexual abuse from family members. Through these many hardships, she still managed to become one of the most successful talk show hosts, television producers, etc. She shares her success with her followers and people who need it most through gifts and donations. And in recent news she donated $10 million to the coronavirus relief.

This can be seen in every line of work, not only celebrities. Successful business men and women, many of whom started out with nothing to their names persevered  and climbed the economies ladder. What these individuals share is the mindset of figuring things out independently. This one simple idea is what defines them and is what needs to be implemented throughout every child’s upbringing. The challenge is determining what specific steps need to be done in order to pass on this way of thinking, while keeping a childhood enjoyable.

It goes to show that not all people who’ve had a difficult upbringing become amazing people, parents who commit crime and have substance abuse tend to have children who grow up doing the same. “First, the broken family creates conditions to predispose children to criminal activities” says Effects of Family Structure on Crime a collection of data created by Marripedia a social science encyclopedia. They go on to talk about several different statistical evidence such as individuals who have been charged by police and then separating them by family structure and religious practice to name one. “The scholarly evidence suggests that at the heart of the explosion of crime in America is the loss of the capacity of fathers and mothers to be responsible in caring for the children they bring into the world.” The years children spend with their parents or guardians are what decides what type of person they’ll be, but those who work to be their own person and not be defined by their parents, learn lessons along the way that few have the chance to. This leads to them becoming an individual who is down to earth and well rounded.

This is even depicted in movies, the main character who doesn’t use fancy training techniques and often comes from a single parent home, defying all odds, and against the one who has had everything they could have ever needed given to them. Classic movies like the Karate Kid, Daniel who is from a single parent home and no background in martial arts defies all odds and competes against his bully in a tournament. He not only wins the match, but he gains the respect of his enemy, which turns out is what he needed all along. What sounds like one of the cheesiest story lines is what inspired many other storylines to come. A hero figure, from humble beginnings, takes matters into their own hands to get what they want and persevere. The types of movies are inspiring and for most viewers and makes them want to be better people.

So why don’t we do this in real life? Unfortunately the desire to want to be successful is not naturally in all of us. The individual needs to decide that they want to become better, and in order for that to happen parents must inspire them to do so. We as a society can’t drastically alter the way we’ve raised children for the past generations. Especially if the thing that we’re changing is making a child’s upbringing inherently more challenging.

To fully apprehend this concept you must be open for new ideas, including ones that challenge your beliefs. It is only natural for parents to want the best for their child, and give them everything they could ever want in life. However what you want in life and what you need to survive and to succeed are two drastically different things. By giving your child a set of skills they can use to survive on their own can be one of the greatest gifts of all. Children need to want to survive on their own and become successful as their own person. These qualities can be seen in all of the celebrities and athletes discussed earlier. Individuals who learn to survive on their own and want to get out of the life they are currently living to strive for something that is better, this is what makes an extraordinary individual.

Reflective- Samtheman1448

Core Value 1. My work demonstrates that I used a variety of social and interactive practices that involve recursive stages of exploration, discovery, conceptualization, and development.

I researched a lot on the topic of my essay throughout the entirety of the semester. At one point I considered changing my topic because I was not sure if there was enough information on it but it turns out there was a lot of information on it after thoroughly exploring my resources. Conferencing with Professor made me feel a lot more comfortable re-writing some of my work because he gave me some insight on what I should be looking for in my paper. Professor provided me with some ideas that I used in my essay as good points on to why my argument is right. The conference helped move my paper in the right direction for success.

Core Value 2. My work demonstrates that I read critically, and that I placed texts into conversation with one another to create meaning by synthesizing ideas from various discourse communities.

In order to do well on this assignment, it was critical to read thoroughly and carefully through all my sources to gather the best information that I could. I used certain sources to provide good points in my essay to persuade my readers. By placing certain texts in my paper, like why home field advantage matters, I was then able to explain why it actually does influence how a game is going to turn out by using certain statistics provided by a source that I had found.

Core Value 3. My work demonstrates that I rhetorically analyzed the purpose, audience, and contexts of my own writing and other texts and visual arguments.

I understood while writing my paper that there are a good amount of people that would disagree with my take of extending the season. Some would say that it is not safe and not fair to players. I proved in my paper that it would not be unsafe for the players and that my proposed schedule could potentially create a safer playing field for the athletes where they will have more time off during the season and be able to get paid more money for playing in such a physical, and brutal sport like professional football.

Core Value 4: My work demonstrates that I have met the expectations of academic writing by locating, evaluating, and incorporating illustrations and evidence to support my own ideas and interpretations.

My work does indeed meet the expectations of academic writing because I have included all of the outside resources that I have used for this assignment in either the annotated bibliography or just in my reference section. I have not plagiarized or used any information that I did not include somewhere in reference section. The information that I found online to include in my paper all supports my own ideas and interpretations. The information backs up my thesis and explains thoroughly why the NFL should change its 16 game schedule to an 18 game schedule.

Core Value 5. My work demonstrates that I respect my ethical responsibility to represent complex ideas fairly and to the sources of my information with appropriate citation.

My work shows that I understand all ideas that circle around potential changes to the NFL schedule. I understand why some people would disagree with making the season longer. However, I feel that in my paper, I created a solid argument on to why the NFL should change its schedule to 18 games using different resources across the internet. I used appropriate citation as well, listing all the links that I had used in my paper.

1. Is playing at home really an advantage? Research says…

https://www.sportingnews.com/us/nfl/news/nfl-conference-championship-games-home-field-advantage-records-panthers-bronocos-mlb-nba-nhl/1xio6320kqfb51q28da09zdlyl

Background: This article talks about how home field advantage in professional sports and college sports has been a topic that has been researched for quite some time. Some people believe that it is a real thing and others do not. However, there is an important statistic in this article about how home teams over the years have indeed won more than the away teams.

How I used it: I used a statistic that this article provided explaining how over the years, home teams have won more in professional sporting leagues like the NFL, NHL and MLB. Home field advantage gives the home team a slight edge over the away side because of the crowd having the home teams back and because the away team has to travel which can be tiring.

2. A break from the grind: How NFL players spend their bye week

https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/18013606/how-nfl-players-spend-their-bye-week

Background: This article talks about how important the bye week is to NFL players. It talks about how for some players, the first thing they even take a look at on the schedule is the bye week. It also focuses in on how NFL players are not robots so it is important to them on when they will be able to rest their bodies.

How I used it: In my paper, I talk about the importance of the bye week for my new and improved NFL schedule. I think that their should be two bye weeks and I stress the importance of NFL players staying safe and keeping their bodies healthy so they can play to their best ability.

3. Jerry Jones says players would benefit physically from 18-game schedule

https://www.si.com/nfl/2018/08/28/jerry-jones-18-game-schedule-safer-players

Background: This article talks about Jerry Jones’ opinion on an 18 game schedule and it is perfect for me because he happens to have the same opinion as I do. Jerry Jones talks about how he feels that an 18-game schedule would benefit the players and the fans.

How I used it: This article provides many points and a quote from Jerry Jones that I can use because he seems to have a very similar opinion to mine about an 18 game schedule.

4. Report: NFL owners suggested 18-game schedule with 16-game limit for players

https://www.si.com/nfl/2019/07/12/nfl-18-game-schedule-suggestion-player-limit

Background: This article talks about how NFL owners have previously talked about the possibility of creating an 18 game schedule with the addition of an extra bye week. The article explains how a longer season would bring in more money for the league which means teams will be able to pay their players more as well.

How I used it: This article has the exact same idea as mine when it comes to my proposed schedule. 18 games with two bye weeks is what I stress should happen in the very near future. So, with saying that, this article is a perfect source for my paper.

5. How NFL is set, if needed, to shake up its schedue

https://www.sportsbusinessdaily.com/Journal/Issues/2020/04/27/Leagues-and-Governing-Bodies/NFL-schedule.aspx

Background: This article talks about the possibility of the NFL having to change their schedule for the up coming season. The article also mentions that the current CBA runs out after this season and that the new CBA in 2021 will include a 17 game season.

How I used it: In my paper, I talk about how the NFL’s current CBA expires after the 2020 NFL season. I then provide my personal idea on how the next CBA should be set up when dealing with the new schedule.

6. Is it really a good idea for the NFL to add two more playoff teams?

Background: This article talks about the addition of two new playoff teams for the 2020 NFL season. The article discusses whether if it is a good idea to include the new teams or a bad idea.

How I used it: I talk about how the new change is coming for the 2020 NFL season and how this change can start a chain of changes to the NFL to improve the league as a whole.

7. NFL 2019: Here’s why the proposed 18-game schedule with a 16-game limit could actually work

https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/nfl-2019-heres-why-the-proposed-18-game-schedule-with-a-16-game-limit-could-actually-work/

Background: This article also talks about the proposed idea of playing 18 games but with players only being able to play in a max of 16 of them. This article brings up different points on how this idea would work.

How I used it: In my paper, I talk about the possibility of the NFL changing its league rules and creating an 18 game schedule where players are only allowed to play in 16 of the games. This brings a whole new aspect to the game where teams will have to strategically plan who they will play and who they will not play in certain games.

8. NFL 18-game schedule: Examining scheduling and bye week logistics

NFL 18-Game Schedule: Examining Scheduling and Bye Week Logistics

Background: This article talks about what changes the league would have to make in order to switch to an 18-game schedule. The article brings up a lot of information about how the scheduling for the extra two games would potentially pan out.

How I used it: A large portion of this paper is about how the NFL should expand its regular season schedule to 18 games. The question is how would the two extra games to the schedule be added? Who would each team play? These are questions that need to be answered in order to have a 18 game schedule and I try to add an idea on how this process would take place.

Self-Reflective Statement – Walmaarts

Core Value 1. My work demonstrates that I used a variety of social and interactive practices that involve recursive stages of exploration, discovery, conceptualization, and development.

When I first started researching my topic (coronavirus) there was a lot of information to be discovered. I started looking up different sources and discovered that the information on the virus changed every day because of the uncertainty surrounding the pandemic. The information used in my definition essay was dated back to January and late February. At the time the information was coming out of China and was unreliable. When I wrote my definition rewrite I was able to look back on the data that I acquired and compare it to the new information and form an opinion based off of that.

Core Value 2. My work demonstrates that I read critically, and that I placed texts into conversation with one another to create meaning by synthesizing ideas from various discourse communities.

In my opinion in the beginning my topic was way too broad. The sources that I had at the time gave some information but not was a lot was know about the topic. This caused my definition essay in the beginning to lack the information it needed. Once I found the proper sources with proper information and wrote my rewrite the essay clearly got better and my point got across better.

Core Value 3. My work demonstrates that I rhetorically analyzed the purpose, audience, and contexts of my own writing and other texts and visual arguments.

My audience and purpose of the essay was up in the air. When I started to write my Rebuttal essay I realized that I should shift my audience to show the why the virus is worst than the flu. This changed completely because in the beginning my hypothesis why this virus wasn’t an issue. Due to the fact that I looked at other works and analyzed the purpose of my articles means that in the end I was able to form a better hypothesis.

Core Value 4: My work demonstrates that I have met the expectations of academic writing by locating, evaluating, and incorporating illustrations and evidence to support my own ideas and interpretations.

My Research Paper shows how I found sources to support my hypothesis. Through my essay it proves that I have did my research because of the fact that I was able to quote my findings and use them to support my overall hypothesis.

Core Value 5. My work demonstrates that I respect my ethical responsibility to represent complex ideas fairly and to the sources of my information with appropriate citation.

In my essays, I have cited all of my sources. In the Annotated Bibliography portion of my portfolio it shows how all of my sources were used. Through this assignment I was able to gather all of the information required for my sources and easily showed how I used them throughout my essays.

Reflective – OmgMafia

Core Value 1. My work demonstrates that I used a variety of social and interactive practices that involve recursive stages of exploration, discovery, conceptualization, and development.

When I began forming my hypothesis, that is when my writing turned into a process. My hypothesis needed a lot of revising. It led me to creating my thesis statement, but I couldn’t have done it without the lessons provided by my professor in class. Piece by piece, as my essays came together, I realized that I cannot gather enough information unless I find more resources. My essays were not complete without my resources, without the conferences I had with my professor, and without the brainstorming that I did on my own. In addition, another important factor of my writing was the feedback that was given back to me for my Definition Essay. As it was my first essay that I wrote for Comp II, it was the essay that needed the most revising.  I concluded with my Definition Rewrite Essay, but Core Value 1 has proven to me that writing is a process. There is always room for my writing to grow.

Core Value 2. My work demonstrates that I read critically, and that I placed texts into conversation with one another to create meaning by synthesizing ideas from various discourse communities.

My Causal Essay is an example for Core Value 2 because I placed texts into conversation with one another to create meaning. As I learned in one of Davidbdale’s lessons, I noticed that it was a good idea to write my paragraphs with structure. For example, X causes Y, Y causes Z, and discovering how X is caused in the first place. The resources that I gathered assisted me when I was synthesizing my ideas for my essay. Without them, I would have been lost in the sauce when writing, and I would not have been able to provide evidence to prove my thesis. Adding onto my thesis statement, as I was synthesizing my ideas from various discourse communities, it helped keep my essay in place for my audience to understand.

Core Value 3. My work demonstrates that I rhetorically analyzed the purpose, audience, and contexts of my own writing and other texts and visual arguments.

My Rebuttal Essay was the most difficult assignment to write compared to other assignments. I discovered others’ opinions on my topic when I researched for more resources, and I analyzed the purpose, audience and context of my own writing. For instance, in my Rebuttal essay, I mentioned my opponent’s benefits of having a job attending college full-time. It was a point well taken, but there are not just advantages to having a job while going to college, there are also disadvantages. Therefore, I gave my audience the reasoning of my side. The purpose of my Rebuttal Essay was to defend my position against my opponent who thought it was the best idea to persuade students to get a job while going to college without warning them about the disadvantages.

Core Value 4: My work demonstrates that I have met the expectations of academic writing by locating, evaluating, and incorporating illustrations and evidence to support my own ideas and interpretations.

My Research Paper includes many resources that I have used to prove my thesis to my audience. It does prove that I met the expectations of academic writing because I provided many quotes and paraphrasing from other authors’ articles in my paper. With the help of evidence from many other articles, the illustrations have supported my own ideas and interpretations. Also, in my three essays, the Definition Essay, Causal Essay, and Rebuttal Essay, I have used evidence to help my audience understand that my thesis is valid and it is strong. Without the evidence, my essays would have been hopeless, and I would not have enough knowledge to gather my own interpretations together. My resources have also opened up new perspectives for me, which helped me create new ideas and information for my topic.

Core Value 5. My work demonstrates that I respect my ethical responsibility to represent complex ideas fairly and to the sources of my information with appropriate citation.

Below every single one of my essays, I have provided my resources that I have used in my essays. Moreover, I have completed a Annotated Bibliography assignment that includes all of my resources that I ever used to gather information for my topic. It also includes the background of each article and how I used it, but I only used fourteen sources for my Research Paper. Providing my citations proves that I respect my ethical responsibility to represent complex ideas fairly. With the appropriate citation, I am avoiding the serious problem of plagiarism. I understand that if I did not cite my resources properly, there would be some serious consequences waiting for me. Citing my sources are very important and without that, my paper would not be complete.

Approaching Students
Who Show Warning Signs of Depression

Mental health is a crucial aspect of everyone’s life. If mental health is not properly maintained, it can negatively affect one’s relationships, self esteem and quality of life. But society seems to overlook its impact on our lives. We all know someone who struggles with depression or anxiety- the fact is clear these types of illness are common.  Although there are coping methods designed for such illness, they are applied after the patient was already affected. We see this protocol in the physical health department: medication and physical therapy. Many physical injuries such as muscle tears or cut/broken limbs can be prevented with proper maintenance and attention to safety. From a young age we are also educated on how to stay healthy. We take measures such as a healthy diet and exercise to not get sick or hurt. Ultimately, the goal of being healthy is to prevent physical disorders and illness for as long as possible. Similarly to taking measures to prevent physical illness, research below provides warning signs in hopes of preventing mental illness such as depression.

As symptoms of depression may vary among age groups, the age group that will be focused on is teenagers in high school. An article called “Depression Symptoms and Warning Signs,” by HelpGuide.org, provides a list of symptoms for depression. Despite the fact that this list was designed for individuals to self-analyze, some points on this list may be observable. Symptoms on the list such as “loss of energy, loss of interest in daily activities, and appetite or weight changes” are slight changes in behavior that may be noticed by family. Within the article, one can see that “irritability, anger, and agitation are often the most noticeable symptoms in depressed teens- not sadness.” We see a behavior that is different than we may expect. The importance of learning these warning signs is that we can avoid concern for the wrong individuals. Rather than a melancholic mood, a depressed teenager may show a higher level of frustration and stress.

Research shows that changes in energy level, weight and frequent agitation are not the only warning signs of depression. The National Women’s Health Report analyzed warning signs in the article “Teens & Depression: Recognizing Red Flags” and concluded that observable red flags are changes in sleep schedule and decrease in academic performance. The article continues to report that “Above all, when kids stop doing things they used to do with pleasure, such as parties with friends, sports, et cetera. These are good indicators that an adolescent may be depressed.” This source emphasizes the physical behavior of the teenager, such as decrease in activity or participation, suggesting these behaviors can be as noticeable as anger or agitation. These warning signs are most easily detected by family, as the adolescent will consult parents about not participating in an activity or notice a drop in grades.

Recognizing warning signals is the first step to prevention. Depression is a risk factor for suicide; a more severe case of depression may intensify suicidal ideation. Therefore, recognizing warning signs is only a portion of the necessary action to prevent depression. The current solution to this mental illness is treatment after diagnosis, not preventive measures. There is no doubt that therapy is effective; however, only for those who can build up the courage to seek it. A certain barrier stands in the way between a depressed student and therapy: the stigma surrounding mental illness. The Choices Therapy Team evaluated studies and warning signs of depression while stating “the stereotypical picture of depression and anxiety limits people from identifying those at risk, and makes it difficult for those suffering to identify it themselves.” Not only does detecting warning signs prevent depression, it also prevents those from misunderstanding the concept of mental illness. The stigma of depression is mostly negative and discourages announcing the need for mental help. We are expected to keep that information to ourselves and handle it our own way.  Teenagers aren’t very familiar with dealing with a mental illness; the social stigma surrounding depression may lead them into denial or prevent them from making the initial step to seek professional help. Countering this mentality is crucial for teenagers as they are beginning to enter high school: an environment that can drastically affect one’s mental health. To avoid this, an action following the recognition is necessary: approaching teenagers who show warning signs.

Learning to detect warning signals of depression is a starting point to helping struggling adolescents. Human error cannot be avoided but can be minimized by training authority figures to detect warning signs and avoid misjudgement of depression. As one can conclude, mental health has a significant impact on our lives; detection and action towards warning signs of depression can save lives.

In addition, scientific evidence may support the need for detecting and responding to warning signals. There is a link between depression and genetics, suggesting that we cannot fully get rid of this mental illness. In the article “Genetics and Genomics of Depression” by Pavel Hamet and Johanne Tremblay, depression is “subject to a genetically overlapping and distinct genetic influence.” One can come to the disappointing conclusion that depression will always be present, yet that does not mean we can’t lower the rate as much as possible. This knowledge can be taken advantage of by teaching students and teachers to respond appropriately when encountering a friend, family member or peer with this mental illness.

Despite the soundness of this argument, not all critics agree. When approaching teenagers who show warning signs of depression, there may be several causes for those particular warning signs: a student may be in an argument with someone or just may not be having a good day. With or without the context of the goal(preventing depression), approaching the student may be assumed as invasion of privacy. In a previously mentioned article called “Why Don’t We Treat Mental Illness Like We Do Physical Illness?” by the Choices PsychoTherapy Team, we see that “from the outside, a person can look completely normal.” Depression is associated with a negative stigma, causing people who suffer from it to hide the illness. A warning signal may be detected, and when acted upon, the student can be overwhelmed. As a result, approaching a student showing warning signs of depression may be seen as an insult. Teaching how to detect warning signs may be the difference in looking “normal” and seeing a “hidden” warning sign.  While the intent of the approach might be clear, we must also consider the most careful but effective method to help the student.

High school, along with any other educational institution is a learning environment. It is mandated and designed to educate students and lead them to a hopeful career. This is perhaps the perfect time and place to detect warning signals for depression, as students can be educated to help others and possibly save lives. In high school, many students begin to think about their future; it is essential to keep the school environment as positive as it can be in hopes of a healthy future. As one can see in “A Whole-School Approach Promoting Mental Health and Wellbeing” by Johanna Wyn, Helen Cahill, Roger Holdsworth, Louise Rowling, and Shirley Carson, “Promoting the mental health and wellbeing of all young people is a vital part of the core business of teachers by creating a supportive school environment that is conducive to learning.” A student’s academic performance is greatly affected by mental health. A welcoming school environment will discourage judgement and negative stigma that is associated with depression. As a result, approaching students who show warning signals would be more accepted as an offer for help rather than a personal invasion or insult.

In the perspective of an authority figure, the students’ safety is top priority. This responsibility is generally more applied to physical wellness, but deserves to also be applied to mental wellness. The negative stigma of depression causes those who struggle to refuse to acknowledge the possibility of the mental illness, leading the condition to worsen. This puts the student at risk of suicide. However, when an authority figure begins to question whether or not warning signs are detected, the fear of insulting the student and causing a lawsuit overrides the motivation to help the student. But is it really worth risking a student’s life under your responsibility for not wanting to offend the student? Choosing not to approach the student to avoid the risk of invading his/her personal life may be much worse than making an effort to help one who may desperately need it. More often than not, many would rather stay quiet in fear of misjudging what one may think is a warning signal. Specifically for this reason there would need to be a learning process to detect these warning signs. We must take action to those who show warning signs rather than wait for the mental illness to develop and then treat it. An appropriate setting for learning these warning signs is in high school, with a mental health course and psychologists and professionals nearby if they are needed.

In a school setting, it is important to remember that before approaching the student who may be depressed, there must be a respected relationship between the student body and the staff. A positive and welcoming aura in school would drastically increase the effectiveness of this solution. According to “Teachers as Builders of Respectful School Climates,” by Maria D. LaRusso, “schools with positive climates increase students’ attachment to healthy norms of behavior that are promoted and modeled by teachers and other adults.” Research shows a significant relationship between the school climate and a student’s mental health. The importance of the school environment is that a positive and respectful relationship between staff and students allows the student to feel comfortable. After all, students and teachers spend a majority of their day at school. Creating a healthy school community is essential for everyones’ mental health. One can also conclude that the very presence of positive energy may contribute to preventing depression.

By having a mental health professional, teacher or school psychologist approach students who show warning signs of depression, the social stigma of this mental illness could change and the teenage suicide would decrease. This would be upon the responsibility of authority figures. As previously mentioned, a respected bond between an authority figure and a student has benefits; it allows trust and security to grow from both parties. According to the “Teen Depression and Suicide” article by Keith King and Rebecca Vidourek, “a key component to preventing teen depression and suicide is for professionals, parents/guardians, teachers, other supportive adults (e.g., coaches, religious youth group advisors, after school program leaders,) and youth to remain aware of such warning signs and risk factors and to appropriately intervene when necessary.” This statement is not without reason. The condition of the school community has a major impact on a student’s willingness to accept help. As a warning signal for a physical illness would be cared for immediately, adults must also be prepared to detect warning signs for depression and step in to guide the student. Through this solution, we are taking action beyond addressing the issue.

A study conducted by Donna Moilanen and Susan Bradbury analyzes the effect of implementing a program called “A High School Depression and Suicide Prevention Program.” In this study, health educators designed this program to educate students about depression, which was also provided to the teachers and staff. Then, the students went through a depression screening process. With respect to the students, their identities were kept anonymous unless they were comfortable with discussing the results of the screening. Resources such as school counselors, psychologists and mental health professionals were available to contact if needed. Donna and Susan mention that “attempts were made to meet with students identified as being most at risk by virtue of their total score on the depression screening survey.” Those students at most risk were generally in grades 9-11(ages 15-17). After a period of time, another survey was sent to the students who chose to accept help. As a result, a majority of the students were more aware of warning signs of depression as well as a slight decrease in attempted suicide; although it is a slight change, it is progress. Over time we would slowly but surely see a decrease in depressive symptoms. With a similar program being implemented into the high school curriculum and current therapy methods in action, the mental state of our community would greatly improve.

Moilanen and Bradbury’s research method supports the idea that approaching students with information and resources is beneficial for students’ mental health. Not only did the students become more aware of warning signs of depression, an unexpected result has emerged from the study(Donna, Susan) previously mentioned: “they were more aware of how to help themselves or someone else who is feeling depressed or suicidal.” Their finding suggests that perhaps the students, not just teachers and psychologists, may also detect and help those who show warning signs or are already struggling with depression. This outcome may “cover more ground” in terms of detecting warning signals and reaching out to the student.

It is important to remember that those who are struggling with depression may not have the courage to seek help. Maintaining a positive and respectful school environment can encourage a student to not be afraid to speak out. Implementing a mandatory mental health course in the first 2 years of high school would introduce these warning signs and teach students the severity of depression, as well as effective ways to help, either by guiding them to a psychologist and/or providing moral support. The purpose of the course being mandatory in the first 2 years of one’s high school career is that the student learns about this information and resources at a young age, leading to long lasting effects.

This goal to prevent depression is not a one-step process. To maximize the efficiency of this approach, there must be a respected relationship within the school. With the help of mental health professionals, teachers, and even students, the change in rate of depression may be an influence to communities outside of the education department.
